Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 I would never count out the Yankees or Red Sox given that they could just spend money at anytime. Red Sox won 78 games this season in what was considered a rebuild year. They actually played good baseball earlier on and were around .500 most of the season until the final couple of weeks. They even gave the Jays a tough time earlier in the year. They could make the jump maybe to 82-85 wins possibly. As for the Yankees, they just need to open up their wallets and they could be back being a 90 win team. They won 82 games this season considering all the disappointing years from certain players and pitchers. We'll see what happens this offseason. It's possible they're both better than the Jays but it seems very unlikely at this point. It's just doomsday posting where the worst is assumed for the Jays but all our opponents get the benefit of the doubt. Both of them were quite a far ways off this year. And the spending can help but they both seem to be reaching their limits (I think?) and there isn't a ton out there to spend on anyway. Ohtani to either one of them might have caught them up to us in a hurry if he was pitching still but he's not. I suppose the Yankees have a better chance. Spend on Matt Chapman and get a big year, Volpe improves, Judge is healthier, Rodon bounces back, etc.
Nexii Verified Member Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 You all are arguing over guys like Hernandez like he's going to be the difference maker to the team. It's clear now that this is a dysfunctional and poisoned team culture and there is more going on behind the scenes than we know. It's going to be an uphill battle until both of these people are jettisoned from the team: 1. Atkins (and his team of nerds). 2. Guerrero. If I rant too much it'll just get deleted again so I'll just leave it at that. Get rid of the cancers and this team should become what it is on paper, assuming good health. A 95ish win team that is "built for the playoffs". Agree 100% on #1. Hard to say about Guerrero since the management has always been a joke. No accountability anywhere in the chain from GM on down. It's little wonder three players were fat and they made so many silly mistakes on the bases all season. Granted we won't know unless they really clean house. I think Guerrero can be managed by the right manager though
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 The Red Sox were NOT rebuilding on purpose. They signed Turner, Yoshida, Jansen, Duvall, Paxton, Chris Martin, Kluber. They previously brought in Story. They just sucked. They ended up looking like a rebuilding team at the end of the year though. Also signed Devers to long extension in Jan 23. 11/331. After 2018 I never count them out. They also had a deeper run than expected in 2021 winning the wildcard and division series.

Maybe the equivalent to like when the Yankees signed CC, Burnett and Tex during the 08/09 offseason. Yankees probably have the better chance like you said. They still have one of the best pitchers in Cole, and one of the most feared hitters in Judge. They get some guys like Rodon, Stanton, Rizzo to bounce back and stay healthy, along with some improvements in Volpe, Torres and Domingues, they could be an 85-90 win team. We'll see what kind of offseason they have. I think they make a couple big moves this offseason. They really could have used Ohtani as a two-way player.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Lmao Great analysis. It's a tougher case to make for the Red Sox but not entirely outside the realm of possibility, they do have talent. The Yankees aren't far off at all. King looked great in the rotation. Just a healthier season from the Yankees would have had them neck and neck with us this year. They just need a couple of stop gap solutions and another big power bat along with a little bit better luck in the health department. Maybe a back end veteran arm. The Blue Jays have significant questions, along with a major decision to make soon on a superstar who's not actually a superstar. Both teams have issues but I think the Yankees have a quicker road to success. It'll be easier for them then it will be for us. The Red Sox will need a little bit more to go their way, but to act as if it's entirely outside the realm of possibility is stupid.

King can't do a season as an SP, his arm would fall off - his arm is so fragile its probably going to fall off however they use him. Yankees and Red Sox have far more holes and question marks than the Jays.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I don’t know who NYY pieces would be for Arenado, but I could see that happening. They’ll also be looking at the SP I think. I like Rodon to bounce back if he can stay somewhat healthy
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Rodon bounce back chances are pretty slim
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Rodon bounce back chances are pretty slim I have the chances of Rodon bounce back and Bellinger not pulling a Kris Bryant about the same
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 12, 2023 Author Posted October 12, 2023 Rodon bounce back chances are pretty slim Well he HAS to be better than 2023

Pretty much a Spanky response. He could do better!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Rodon bounce back chances are pretty slim I bet Rodon posts a higher WAR than Berrios or Kikuchi. I give him a mulligan on this season. If he's healthy and 100%, he's been one of the most dominant starters in baseball. I'm not going to let one season change my opinion about him.

I’ll probably be ATTACKED for this, but I don’t think Rodon will remain healthy and anywhere close to 100% going forward.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 His career high 178 IP in 2022 killed him He only threw 64.1 innings this season so he should be good in 2024.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 He only threw 64.1 innings this season so he should be good in 2024. He's gone the way of Paxton and Sale, chronic arm issues, a good game every long now and then

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 He's gone the way of Paxton and Sale, chronic arm issues, a good game every long now and then Thor also came to mind. At some point the # of arm injuries he's had over the years will catch up. It might have happened, or he might give the Yanks another dominant year in 2024. Complete unknown.

I don't think it's just one season though at this point is it? The 4 seasons from 2017 to 2020 he stunk. I guess that shows he has the ability to bounce back but now he's on the wrong side of 30.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I'll take that bet. I wouldn't be surprised if Rodon out WARs one of Berrios or Kikuchi. But it's by no means a lock and that's some very very low expectations for a guy you just gave 27 mill per season to. Berrios makes 18.7 a year and Kikuchi gets 12.

It's the Yankee's fault for throwing a huge chunk of money at an injury prone starter.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Sure! So the bet is that Rodon has to have a higher WAR than one of Berrios or Kikuchi or both?
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 So the bet is that Rodon has to have a higher WAR than one of Berrios or Kikuchi or both? Lets go with either one of them. Doesn't matter who.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 You guys should be getting way better odds, Jaysblue is getting a 30 million dollar a year player and all he has to do is put up more WAR than Kikuchi who got 30 million total for 3 years. He even gets a fallback with the "or" better than Berrios. Should have at least made it so he's better than both. I guess it's completely possible that Rodon's arm explodes in ST again though. Though he could STILL win if Kooch throws up another negative season lol.
