John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Conforto! The left handed batting Girchuk! At least Conforto takes some walks. Not as good defensively though

Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted December 23, 2021 Author Posted December 23, 2021 A few people have mentioned LGJ may actually play okay at 3B. I don't know how I feel about this.
The_DH Verified Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 A few people have mentioned LGJ may actually play okay at 3B. I don't know how I feel about this. I can understand that. It would have been nice if they gave him some innings during blow outs and such. That way we'd all know (as opposed to guess) if he's capable or not.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 The Jays have a legit chance to win the division in 2022. I don't think they risk experimenting with Gurriel at 3B for that reason, especially given how bad he looked as a 2B/SS before they moved him to the OF. Maybe give him some reps in ST to see how he looks there, but by then they probably would have already acquired a 3B. I don't think that proposed Ramirez trade would interest CLE much. They would likely have no interest in Biggio, and most of their top prospects are infielders so I'm not sure if Groshans moves the needle for them. They definitely seem to love Kirk based on recent rumors over the years, and Gurriel fills a need for them, so that part seems fine. I'd be fine with that move as proposed, but whether CLE would value that over keeping Ramirez and trying to compete in a weak division + what should be an expanded playoff format is another story. Maybe that same offer, replacing Gurriel with a prospect, would interest the D-Backs for Marte, but I don't know enough about their org needs.

Cbert Verified Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 I think I’d prefer the Jays go for Marte. Takes a similar package but you get an extra year of control for a guy who can play multiple positions. Depending on payroll I’d try to do that and add someone like Bryant for 3B/OF. He can man the hot corner and if Jansen locks down catcher and Moreno looks ready for third, Bryant can play in the outfield a bit. Ideally we could find a taker for Grichuk which would cover most of Marte’s contract. I just think if there’s legitimacy to the Jays being in on Seager, then I’d rather pay the same plus a few prospects to cover two holes with solid players instead of one hole for a stud.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 I dont think trading for Marte would be a similar cost, Marte doesn't have that same Ramirez superstar history. He's a legit star, of course, but I think he could be pried away for decidedly less than Ramirez, even with the extra year of control.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 Marte’s ability to play CF makes him super valuable if they’re able to get rid of Grichuk. George isn’t going to play 140 games in CF. I just think the cost is going to be too high to acquire Ramirez. The extra year of control is modest salary is a big factor to me too.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 Use trade options for pitching.
The_DH Verified Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 How many games are we seeing Marte for 2b/cf/lf? I think it'll be a bit of an overpay to get him for cf/lf. And if it is for 2b, is he still a 2b? He's mostly been an of.
The_DH Verified Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 That's cool if he's a full time 2b and sometime cf. Basically he occasionally replaces Springer in late innings and the backup infielder Espinal comes in. Still leaves us weak at 3b and a very right handed lineup. I imagine there's a lot of balls in the air and this is one of them.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2021 Posted December 23, 2021 LGJ at 3rd base is insane and makes this board look stupid for someone even suggesting it. He was atrocious at 2nd and would be even worse at 3B. Vlad Jr. at his fattest would be better than LGJ at 3B. First base I could potentially see. But 3B is not an option.

LGjr at 3b is the worst case scenario, only due to injury to like 5 other guys type of solution for the rest of 1 game until they can call someone else up for tomorrow.

I actually haven’t watched LG in the IF much but I would still prob bet money that he would be better than Biggio, hands down. So someone couldn’t be more stupid suggesting it, than all the people that shrugged their shoulders while Biggio single-handedly could tank a game at any time

Gurriel has played extensively at SS, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't implode from a look at 3B which is a much less demanding position. His problem was that he had godawful range and the yips on throws from 2nd, both of which you can hide at 3rd. He hasn't had any throwing issues in the outfield and the coaching staff obviously trusts him to play first base, which involves a lot of short throws on the infield. I don't think he would have any issues gunning it from the hole.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 I seem to recall LGJ getting pre game or spring training reps at 3B last season? He'd be below average, but not as bad as Fat Vlad, I say.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 Baseless garbage take Lol you guys are dumbasses. If Gurriel is such a great option at 3B then why was he a dumpster fire in the infield by every metric (SSS but everything on Fangraphs and Statcast says he sucked) and then banished to the outfield in the middle of the 2019 season? He couldn't even throw the ball to 1B and now after a 3 year break he's supposed to be viable at 3B?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2021 Posted December 27, 2021 Jeff McNeil from the Mets reportedly to be on the block when the lockout is over. Option for the IF situation for the Jays? Can play 2b, 3b and OF, hits lefty. Coming off a down year after 3 pretty solid ones. Projected for 2.5 million in Arb for the upcoming season, with Arb2 and Arb3 in '23 and '24. Not a ton of HR pop but decidedly more power than Espinal, takes some walks and doesn't strike out a ton. Worth a look?

Is he really that much of an upgrade to pay the cost?

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2021 Posted December 28, 2021 Biggio >> Espinal As a 3b, I’d say it’s <
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2021 Posted December 28, 2021 As a 3b, I’d say it’s < Possibly. Espinal will likely be worse, and Biggio better, than 2021. How it shakes out TBD but I wouldn't be surprised if a healthy Biggio is the better 3B option.
Cbert Verified Member Posted December 28, 2021 Posted December 28, 2021 What would it cost to get McNeil though? Would it be him straight up for Kirk? More? Less?
