Even during their recent good stretch the team hasn't hit well at all. I just don't see where the offense is going to come from, never mind the rotation issues that were outlined. Would love to be wrong though. The next 11 games against Boston, NYY, and Tampa (at least 3 losses since it's 3 in St. Pete) will be telling. If they go 6-5 in those 11 and no other team ahead of them goes on a run, then they might have a puncher's chance.

Giving a struggling vetrin with closer experience to JS is terrifying. He'll get the high leverage spots regardless of performance. Hopefully they can fix him for 2 months.

Hoffman was signed to be the closer, and the team kept him there all of 2025 even when the numbers suggested they shouldn't have. Then they began 2026 with him in that role again despite how 2025 ended. Then he lost the closer role and became more of a 7th inning guy. A 7th inning guy making $11M a year is a luxury, something the Jays aren't good enough to have at the moment. Getting a prospect with upside (plus other lotto tickets) and reallocating the money next season seems like a far more sensible idea, and I'm glad they did it even if Hill never pans out.

The team's wRC+ leader on the season is Jesus Sanchez at 110. Only 4 players are at 100 or above on the roster. Top 2 in position player WAR are Gimenez (2.0) and Valenzuela (1.7), meaning the most valuable position players on the team are a dude who can't hit (unless it's a clutch situation apparently) and a backup catcher acquired for Will Wagner. I want to believe, especially since I don't know how much baseball if any we will get in 2027, but the only chance the Jays have is sucking less than six other teams. I would be shocked if they go on a legit heater with the bats they have in the lineup.

So far the Jays have started this tough 20 game stretch (3 at HOU, 1 at CHC, 3 at PHI, 4 vs BOS, 3 vs NYY, 3 at TAM, 3 at NYY) at 4-2. The schedule eases up after that, but getting through that 20 game stretch within 2-3 games of the final WC spot is going to be very difficult. At least hoping for a somewhat competitive last 2 months of the season. Not expecting much but let's hope for a run.

Looking at the 40 man roster, there's nothing terribly exciting on it, but would much rather see guys like Keys and McAdoo (and Clase when healthy) getting PA's than the vetrins that Atkins didn't want to get rid of in a lost season for some reason. I guess they'll wait until they are a sizable distance behind the 3rd WC before outright punting the rest of the way (optics, baby), but these lineups are ass with no upside at all. Pretty depressing if there isn't a significant position player turnover next season. Half the lineup probably needs to be upgraded on, at a minimum.
