So say it was for 20M signing bonus per year then they still have to pay him 20M even if there is a CBA work stoppage as its a "signing bonus". At least thats how it has worked in the NHL.

Yeah it really doesn't make sense they caved this hard. Also sets a bad precedent for other negotiations in the future with players/agents.

Donaldson and Martin just won their case against them. CRA is appealing but it's a good sign for Vlad and other Blue Jays moving forward.

Yeah as long as Rogers doesn't change course the signing should be okay. Rogers likely understands the risks and overruled Shapiro and Atkins for marketing and media reasons. Those reasons could make perfect sense since they have a sports network that heavily features the team.

But 14 years is a long time for a corporation to hold firm in one direction, particularly when that direction revolves around a mega payroll for their baseball team.

Curious what this, if anything, says about their jobs post 2025. Clearly they did not value Vlad at this contract, so they were overruled by ownership. Regardless, even if extended, they won't be around long enough to have to deal with Vlad's declining years at the end, so ultimately it doesn't really hurt them all that much one way or the other. I would think between this and the Kirk extension that Shapiro has gotten some assurance that he's sticking around.

Probably not much affect.

I think the pressure to win is still there, and maybe moreso, but it's also easier to win in the short term with Vlad back in the fold on an AAV that isn't much higher than what he was making.

So, the reason it's a 325 million dollar signing bonus.... is because signing bonus amounts are only taxed in players place of residence, which for Vlad is in Florida. Ergo, no state income taxes on 325 million of that 500 million dollar deal, it's only the remaining 175 million taxed based on where his games are played.

Its honestly kind of a clever way to make the tax situation even

I think Vlad and his team knew they had all the power in those conversations because Rogers was so invested in the city's sports and wouldn't want to be known as the richest owners who couldn't lock up their homegrown talent.

Surprised the Jays weren't going this sooner. NHL teams have been doing it for years.

CRA will come after Vladdy and argue they deserve tax on the signing bonus though. But good chance they won't get it.

The last interview with Shapiro before the Vlad signing, he said they went over valuations twice already, guess 3rd time was a charm. Certainly an Ed Rogers over step.

There’s many casuals like me that would’ve given up on the Jays, or put them on the far back burner. It was more than about a player.

Besides that, the draft is mlb is wildly unscientific, with the full power of hindsight. Tanking isn’t the way to go, nor is concentrating too hard on your ebitda. These are trophy assets. The few owners that choose to run it like a straight business, Marlins/Pit/Tampa etc lose hundreds and hundreds of millions in franchise value, not spending bc they’re not competing. 
 

I can think of a few reasons you’d want to tank

1) You’re coming up on 5-10 years of your stadium lease and you’re seriously exploring changing cities

2) You’re looking to stay in the same city, but you want hundreds of millions in welfare and you want to project economic hardship 

3) Its a business you inherited from your father, or you’re a crudgy old man 20 years past retirement, and you have no passion for it and you’re just interested in squeezing the orange and playing the stock market, or whatever makes you happy.

Also. If we all want to stop for a minute and just understand I was right about what I seemed to always fight with you guys about all year, offense sails the boat. You pay for offense. Position doesn’t mean s*** if it’s elite offense. If Vlad was a FA, there would’ve been half a dozen teams giving him $500m, That was his market, You can argue if you like the deal or not, buy someone was paying it.

All that said, Vlad is not for the faint of heart, I always compare it to girls in my life, one week I’d defend Vlad against a hungry pack of tigers, then a month later, if he got hit by a bus, or if someone said he’s going to be a colossal bust, I’d probably be indifferent.

One has to wonder if the sss of 10 games gave someone some sway over Vlad, to be like, take the deal or you could be losing hundreds of millions.

Does he sign it if he comes out raking?

I’m pro Vlad and think he makes more if he repeats last year. But I’m open minded and if I’m his agent. I probably tell him take the deal after the first 10 games, He was probably looking at $75m more or something with a repeat and I don’t even want to know how many hundreds of millions less for a blah year.
