[Davidi] Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays have reached agreement on a $500-million, 14-yr extension

Yeah Connor brings up a good point.

If Vlad was raking throughout the first 10-12 games of the season where he had like 4-5 HR's, was hitting 300 with a .900-1000 OPS, wonder if he accepts that total.

At the end of the day, hopefully he can put all the contract distraction stuff behind him and now focus on hitting and tearing the cover off the ball. He's pretty much set for life now and will be the face of this franchise for the next decade.

Connor have they started filming your season yet?

No wife = no season. Woe is me. I’m overseas for an extended period doing some remote work though, starting a few days ago. We’ll see.

Something that occurred to me this week.  Vlad doesn’t bring much to the table other than his bat and I am not sure anyone would argue that he has a better bat than Yordan but is getting paid much more with a far larger guarantee.  Him and Antony took the Jays to the proverbial cleaners.

Well God is all about accumulating wealth and appreciating the material things in life. That's what's in the Bible right? I never read it.

Half billion dollars for 14 years after this one and the trust fund kid can’t catch a ball, run the bases, or show any consistency at the plate year-to-year.  Knowing Rogers, they won’t follow this contract up by signing premium talent.  What a complete and utter disaster this will be.

A week into the contract and even the casuals have turned on Vladdy and saying how bad he is. Ed Rogers got raped so so badly on that deal. What a disaster.

I think it's widely known Yordan is grossly underpaid.  If he didn't sign early, and was approaching free agency right now, he'd be worth more than Vlad.

So, the reason it's a 325 million dollar signing bonus.... is because signing bonus amounts are only taxed in players place of residence, which for Vlad is in Florida. Ergo, no state income taxes on 325 million of that 500 million dollar deal, it's only the remaining 175 million taxed based on where his games are played.

Its honestly kind of a clever way to make the tax situation even

The CBA (as far as competitive balance tac is concerned) really needs to have something in it to balance the tax differences for different teams.

I’m more worried about the Santander deal. Where the guy is so bad, you still play him. Vlad will never be that. I was against that deal from the start. Not a fan of the Kirk extension either. He can’t hit. Too much to pay for D. You can get those catchers cheap and they usually hone their D craft, because that’s what keeps them in the majors. Now you took that motivation away from Kirk. Even if you take a step down on defense, you can still get a high quality defender that can’t hit for a lick, for nothing. The board was also Danny Jansen lovers for his defense. First 5/75 was floated here. Then people changed to 4/40. He got 1/8 lol

Small sample size alert, but Kirk's metric on defense have ticked back this year too so far.  I know I've certainly noticed some balls getting by him that wouldn't have in past years.  He has been a bit faster at least.  That's been my biggest concern is having a station to station singles hitter is not ideal.

Yordan is pretty much exactly what we had hoped Vlad would be

Yet nobody really talks about Yordan being a potential HoF while Vladdy is considered a shoo-in

Gotta think Vlad’s ability/worth around the league is massively overinflated due to his connections and people watching him grow up. He really hasn’t lived up to his touted talent aside from some flashes of brilliance.

This is a wild opinion. Santander’s contract is peanuts, Vlad’s is an absolute anchor for 14 years if he sucks

Vlad has fallen into a tie with Andres Gimenez, Steven Kwan, Riley Greene, and Jacob Wilson for 29th in RoS Steamer/ZiPS WAR projection. Just behind Isaac Paredes and Matt Chapman.

Who is the sabr junkie? Nothing troubling in his profile this year whatsoever, He’s a couple HR from being 2024 right now

Good thing the Jays panicked and decided to lock him up during the season.

Is this likely the worst contract in the sport after Rendon gets dumped?

And consider that they weren't even bidding against anyone

The mind boggles

Worst contract in the sport as soon as ink was put to paper. By a longshot.

Ed Rogers got involved Arte Moreno-style. Fine, as long as he’s willing to continue spending.

But he really needs to just let the front office do their job because he likely knows as much about baseball as your average facebook commenter.

Vlad still projects for between 5-6 WAR

He has a 145 weighted runs created plus

This is not the worst contract in the sport

135 but yeah, it's silly to bump this at this point.

It will be at some point, but it's probably fine for the next few years.

A bigger issue for me is if things go south this season and there's a FO change for 2026, then the new FO is going to inherit this contract, plus 4 years of Gimenez at big money, 4 years of Santander, and 5 of Kirk when it's possible they may not have valued any of the them (especially the latter 3) at those years/price points.

Good use of the word.  I think we all feel despondent about the Blue Jays.

I don’t think this is ever a worst contract in baseball deal. I think that’s too extreme of a label

Look at Soto. Basically identical projections to Vlad ROS for 15M more per season. Not saying that’s the worst contract either but if it’s not Soto then it really can’t be Vlad

The Gimenez contract is fairly gross. Santander is low enough AAV but it’s 4 more years. Kirk is pretty much FA money. But that’s a lot of dough to guys who could all be pretty meh
