Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Votto looks like it will likely work out. Jeter's 10 year deal worked out for the Yankees. Dave Winfield's contract worked out. There haven't really been that many 10-year deals, and most of them are just getting started. Off the top of my head, some extremely bad ones are: Stanton, Pujols, Fielder
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 And most of the 10+ year deals were for free agent players or elites approaching FA. The trend of locking up babies in their young twenties for 10, 12, 14 years is pretty new.

A 10-12 year deal for Vlad would take him through age 32-34. There is still obviously risk with any deal for that length of time, but it's not the same type of risk as signing him to 10-12 years at age 26.

I would happily sign Vlad for 10 years as soon as the lockout is over. 10 years, 250-280 million would be my max. It's pretty much 10 million for 2022, then 15, 20 and 25 for the rest of his arb years, and 30-35 million for years 5-10. you lock in his best years and avoid the downside. Add in some Awards based incentives for MVP, Silver Sluggers that could take it over 300 million and I would be fine with that too. The only real risk is injury and/or ice cream consumption.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 The front office will know better than anyone else if Guerrero has a competitive spirit or if he is going to mail it in as soon as he has a big contract. Or is a significant injury risk. If they sign him to a long term deal, then I trust that it's the best move they can make given the information they have. If they don't sign him to a deal, then I trust that it's the best move they can make given the information they have. I get a chuckle in reading some of the posts here about what each person thinks the team should sign him for. Signing a contract this big is a massive amount of risk no matter who it is and every person on here lacks the information necessary to make such a decision. Literally just pure guessing to pass the time.

Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 wondering what if any a possible travel issues starting in the new year will affect any free agent signings?? Hopefully not Fla and Buffalo again...grrr
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Harrison would be a good utility player option for a winning ball team.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Hmm... Interesting. When I said I wanted to upgrade on Valera, this is basically the kinda upgrade I was looking for.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 If the Jays are not going to make another big FA splash (Correa/Bryant/Story), and either don't want to give up the prospects or can't find a deal for Ramirez/Marte/Chapman, then Harrison might be the next best infield option available. It depends on how you view him versus Seager, but I think I'd prefer Harrison due to his versatility. If Harrison's market is as hot as it was stated in that tweet, then I don't think he signs here to be a backup, but I agree he would be a nice utility IF for contending teams.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Both Harrison and Seager are ok options. Both rate fine defensively and Harrison has some versatility but Seager bats left. Not sure how much better they make the team over someone like Kevin Smith though, especially as age will soon catch up with them. But I suppose it wouldn't hurt to option Smith for depth anyway. If this team truly wants to propel itself into top tier contender status though I really think they should consider trading for Jose Ramirez. I saw this proposal on twitter. It's a tough pill to swallow but I think I'd probably do it.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 I think it would selling low on LG. Not a fan

I'm not a big fan of this as it's built, but I would still be exhausting every possibility to try and get Ramirez in the fold. Of those 4 guys, I'd probably tell them they can pick 3 of them, then add some low minor's lottery ticket instead. It would probably end up being LG, Kirk, Groshans + the lottery pick. That should be sufficient depending on how they value those players. though If I was Cleveland, The conversation would probably start with Moreno.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 2 years of Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is what you're worried about? Who are you replacing the maybe 130-140 wRC+ corner OF with?
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Who are you replacing the maybe 130-140 wRC+ corner OF with? Maybe the Jays think/know they have the inside track on Schwarber, Conforto, Pham, Castellanos or even Suzuki? Adding switch hitting Ramirez and power lefty Schwarber would really diversify the offense.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Maybe the Jays think/know they have the inside track on Schwarber, Conforto, Pham, Castellanos or even Suzuki? I’d feel better if that happened, sure. But if not, I’d pass
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 I’m being a broken record but I’d much do the Ketel trades I’ve seen proposed
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Who are you replacing the maybe 130-140 wRC+ corner OF with? I think he's more like a 110 wRC+ with horrendous defense. I don't hate him but he's replaceable IMO, especially when we're talking about one of the premier talents in baseball in Jose Ramirez. There are numerous FA options that we could replace him with. Guys like Conforto, Schwarber, Nelson Cruz, the Japanese guy, Joc Pederson, McCutchen and Soler all project similarly to Gurriel next year.

I can’t say that’s an unfair view of him, I just personally think he’s better. Some of those FA options I like, others I don’t

It's so much easier and cheaper to replace a 110-130 wRC+ corner OF than buy a star 3B or middle IF bat.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Move LG to 3rd. Do a more reasonable trade for Ketel. Sign Conforto short term. Reasonable dream
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Looking at some OF options and Conforto can really mash. He's not a total zero with the glove either. He'd be a great buy low candidate IMO and probably a better fit than Schwarber would be. Particularly if we move Gurriel or Grichuk and need a guy who can play the OF often.
