Absurd depth though lol, Braydon Fisher beginning in AAA after the season he just had I think falls in the category of "embarrassment of riches". And naturally, injuries will sort the roster jam by themselves. I agree, I suspect Nance and Miles are fighiting for one spot, which will make room for another lefty in the pen. Either Little or Fluharty probably grab that spot while the other goes to Triple A. Which gives them clear LH and RH reliever (Fisher) options to call up for when injuries appear. If all goes well for Ricky T, we could see him in the 2nd half of the season. I think Miles has an uphill battle to make the roster after missing so much time.

I don't think stashing starter depth in the pen is actually a good idea unless their stuff really plays up. I'm not sure that's true for berrios or lauer. The bigger issue is getting Berrios to go along with being in the pen. I am sure they are exploring trades, but they aren't going to accept a silly trade just to move Berrios. If they cannot move him, then he is in the bullpen, where he has no track record and will be unhappy.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 We just need to get Berrios highlight reel onto the screen of Arte Moreno and we’re set.

Alejandro Murphy Verified Member Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 I am excited of our starting rotation especially what Trey can do in a full season (btw, just received in the mail the authenticated Yesavage Autographed baseball after 2 months of waiting 😅) also looking forward to both Cease and Ponce especially Ponce 6’6” guy with depth and velocity. Go Jays ! P.S. very difficult decision who to pick Bo (homegrown talent/ long tenure and offensive strength). Then Tucker, a left handed hitter who could do MAJOR damage either in front of Vlad or behind Vlad in the line up One more P.S. lol the Berrios situation, don’t see him as part of the rotation moving forward. If we can package him to acquire Mason Miller, damn that would be a major coup. GO JAYS ! BTS 1

I guess i just don't like the composition of it once you get to the back end of the pen. I think this is a fair take from the perspective of, we're in the top of the 9th in game 7, do we have that one guy we're comfortable with closing the door? Anecdotally, we obviously saw what happened to "our guy" in that exact scenario - although he otherwise had a pretty excellent playoff run, but I digress. I still think Hoffman has a chance to be that guy, but he'll need to build up that trust again. On the other hand, it's a very deep group in terms of: our starter struggles through 3-4 innings, can we reasonably expect the bullpen to keep us in the game? Despite the bullpen reasonably doing an okay job at that at times these playoffs, it certainly wasn't the group you had the most hope in. This is obviously evidenced by our usage of guys like Bassitt, Gausman and Yesavage in crucial games when other teams may have considered leaning on their top bullpen arms. With this group, aside from like Little, there's not a guy that you're cringing your teeth and praying they're not the ones coming in to stop the bleeding.

Also, Nance, Little, Fluharty, and Fisher can reasonably be second tier setup men as well, say 7th inning guys. So you could have a full 8 man bullpen without any slop at all. It's great for depth. Not to mention the rule 5 guy, and Bastardo, and Tiedemann, and the excess SP...
jmomcc Verified Member Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 I think i used terminology wrong. The back end is the good end? I meant the other way around. I like our 4 best relievers. i think if you could get Varland's fastball location up instead of middle, then he could be our closer honestly. I'm not sure how that would be achieved. its just such an obvious problem though and the reason i think he strikes out less than he should. Its too easy to sit on locations with him because everything is middle or down. If he could throw 98 up and knuckle curves down, he would be absolutely nasty. My problem is with the bottom 4. I think lauer and berrios are redundant. And then little is a worry as our best leftie. I think they will trade berrios or lauer and one of miles and bastardo will make it though. Then maybe tieddemann can be an impact leftie. Fisher will be the glue guy.

Berrios is dead weight. If you offered him and his contract to every ML team and asked for a hot dog in return - all teams would laugh in your face. The only way you can get rid of him is to pay his salary, or include additional talent. Mason Miller has 4 years of control left and is one of the very best, if not the best RPer in baseball. We'd have to sacrifice a metric f*ckton of talent to land him. Alejandro Murphy 1

They want a starter an OF & to cut payroll. They can use Hoffman as their closer. Sure we'd have to send cash. Maybe Nimmala & another prospect or two.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 Since the Padres want to cut payroll, maybe we could get them to toss FTJ into that deal as well. Stangstag 1
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 Are people sniffing glue again? SD wants to cut payroll, so they'll trade the superstar closer who's projected to make just $3.3M this year in Arb 1 In exchange, we'll give them Hoffman at $11M and Berrios at $19M + the remaining years on both their deals. BTS Community Moderator Posted December 17, 2025 Author Posted December 17, 2025 Hey guys, I've been doing a lot of thinking about the pen. Do you think Mason Miller could help the team? I hear the Padres are looking for starting pitching so Jose Berrios should be of interest. Maybe we add Nance and Nimmala? I wonder if they'd throw in Ethan Salas if we add Santander. Please let me know your thoughts. Stangstag, Brownie19, Pinkfloid and 3 others 6
