Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 The study he referenced about DHCMT is pretty damning towards MLB. If legit, it shows how several players could have easily tested positive without taking the substance.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Colabello seems sincere. Who knows what the truth is? Well, we know the truth is that he tested positive for a banned substance and got suspended for it. Im not willing to speculate on whether or not he ingested/injected said substance when we don’t even know what the actual levels were in his test results. Its not like MLB is popping guys left and right for the same substance. I don’t really buy the story of drugs being transferrable via touch, to a level that MLB would ban a player for said substance being in their system. Many many guys have been caught crying that they were innocent only to later be revealed as liars. How many guys have succeeded in clearing their names after claiming they were framed?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 I actually might feel bad for him but don't know enough to speculate either way. Others in a position to do so can dive into his allegations. It sounds harsh, but why does anyone care 7 years later about a player with one freak 143 wRC+ season, coming out of nowhere at 31 years old. It sucks for him, but all have moved on.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Yeah realistically the suspension had minimal impact on his career.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 The study he referenced about DHCMT is pretty damning towards MLB. If legit, it shows how several players could have easily tested positive without taking the substance. That study does absolutely nothing to exonerate Colabello. That study had the anabolic steroid dissolved into DMSO, a well known absorption enhancer which facilitates the absorption of substances through the skin which wouldn't otherwise pass through the skin barrier on their own. Unless Colabello is inferring that he accidentally touched an anabolic steroid that just so happened to be dissolved in a penetration enhancing solvent this doesn't seem like it's much of a possible explanation for how he tested positive.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Yeah the study is not "damning". The purpose of the study was just to show that absorption through the skin is plausible. Being said, if Colabello came into accidental contact with DHCMT, it probably would be some form of topical steroid cream etc. that would be dissolved in something to facilitate absorption through the skin. It's not like he would just be bumping into the raw metabolite in the shower or something.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 The new market inefficiency for teams: hire random people, provide them with steroids dissolved in a skin penetrating substance to go around to ballparks and shake every opposing player's hands on a daily/weekly basis.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 I recall that Colabello was tested in February prior to spring training and he was caught unawares, which is fine unless he was on the gear and hoping it would be out of his system before reporting to spring training. Also recall that Pillar was the only player that spoke up in his defense. Perhaps the others knew (suspected?) and were not naive enough to open their mouths in his favour. At that stage of his career it definitely had an impact. Without the suspension he probably could have squeezed another year or maybe two in the majors.

It definitely didn't help that all his numbers cratered after that. I know his BABIP was ridiculous in 2015, but damn, he fell off a cliff.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 I really hope the Jays play the Twins lol. Much preferred to playing Baltimore/Tampa… Facing Seattle on the road and stomping them would be some sweet revenge too though

Jays and Seattle would have to win almost all the rest of their games and TBR lose a lot to both catch TBR to push TBR down to WC3 and to Minnesota.

Basically gonna be either Tampa/Baltimore or the Twins then. Funnily enough, if we do well against Tampa in these last 6 games we could be rewarded with… playing them at the Trop again in the WC series. Ugh

Ugh I really don't see a realistic scenario where the Jays finish with WC2 unless they go something like 8-4 in their last 12 (I wouldn't bet on that). They don't have the tiebreaker against SEA/TEX, and 7 of the last 12 games for both the Mariners and Rangers are against each other so somebody is going to win those games. The Jays best shot at making it might be if one of those teams wins like 5 of 7 in the H2H games, in which case the Jays would be looking at WC3 anyway since I doubt they're doing better than 6-6 or maybe 7-5 against the Yankees/Rays.

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 Gabriel Moreno has 3.9 bWAR and leads baseball in BR's version of defensive WAR with 2.9 Big discrepancy with fWAR which sits at 1.5

Still hopeful that trade works out for both teams, but it's looking less likely these days.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 Varsho is disappointing but he's doing juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust enough to keep hope that he could rekindle his 2022 level of production with some minor changes. Agreed the D-Backs are super fun. Too bad a lot of their young pitching absolutely s*** THE BED this year. Pfaadt, Nelson, Jameson, Henry, Cecconi. I mean, it's all Corbin Carroll I guess. without him they aren't that fun, haha.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 That's true - but Carroll is f***ing electric. Marte and Moreno are great and Lawler is on his way. Walker is rock solid also. It's also too bad that Alek Thomas seems to be more of a 4th OFer. Gallen is a stud, but I agree that several of their ML ready arms just fell flat this year. If they can correct that, they'll be cooking with oil for several years.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 Gabriel Moreno has 3.9 bWAR and leads baseball in BR's version of defensive WAR with 2.9 Big discrepancy with fWAR which sits at 1.5 I take catcher DRS with a bit of a grain of salt as it has a catcher ERA component which I have a hard time trusting as it's one metric that seems like literal voodoo. Moreno is credited for 11 of his 19 DRS based on this adjusted catcher ERA. Take away the cERA component of this metric and his overall DRS is slashed from 19 DRS all the way to 8 DRS. Moreno is a great example of the massive discrepancy between the various advanced defensive metrics. Baseball Prospectus abhors his framing and rates him at 0.3 WAR, with his defensive contributions a surprisingly low -7.5 DRP. Statcast rates his overall defensive contributions as well above average with 5 fielding runs (Kirk has 7 for comparison).

I believe Moreno has probably won the battle but it was a great battle between him and Daulton Varsho for the bWAR d-champion According to bref, Daulton Varsho is 3.4 WAR, 2.6 dWAR. Him and Moreno are kind of close in both fWAR (around 1.5 earch) and bWAR (3.4 to 3.9)

Funny how both system are far apart on each player, but track each other for each player. Doesn't work like that all the time. For example Kirk is 1.5 fWAR and 1.8 bWAR, about the same. Funny that Kirk, who has to be getting fatter every game (did you see the slo-mo YES replay of his homerun) is the same as Moreno in fWAR.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 To be fair to Varsho, if he was in CF all season then he’d have been more valuable overall. It would be like the DBacks acquiring Moreno and putting him at 3B. His value is tied to being a catcher, and Varsho’s is tied to being an excellent defensive CF. KK was a great signing all things considered but it was a mistake to have him and Varsho in the same OF.
