I know Swanson has been great and he was brought in for high leverage scenarios. But it would be sick if John S would actually just bring him to start innings instead of letting things become a dumpster fire and expecting him to put it out.

His last 2 appearances

Bases loaded with 0 outs.

Bases loaded with 1 out.

Both scenarios should have started the inning.

Right, and today worked out but last time didn’t. Playing with fire.

Im f***ing sick of bringing in a guy for a 2nd inning, letting the first couple guys reach, then going with a new pitcher that should have just started the inning clean. Even today it happened with Yimi/Swanson and we got lucky. In Philly (and numerous other times) it did not work out

Did Paul Beeston really stop the Jays from being moved to the AL Central?

You know how different the last 20 years would be if we were in the Central? That 20 year period where we didn't contend from 1994-2014 would have looked very different. If nothing else changed we would have won several AL Central crowns but with the weaker competition I could see ownership putting more money into the team and winning even more.

What an idiot

The team only has so many relievers that they trust so it's not always possible to bring in a guy for a fresh inning of work. Sometimes a reliever is simply going to need to be picked up by a mate from the pen when he finds his way into trouble. There are plenty of times where the team prefers to avoid using a guy on a given day if possible, so that very well could factor in to how they've attempted to stretch some of the relievers into a second inning on occasion.

I'd like to see Schneider be a little quicker to give the hook to relievers when it's readily apparent that they don't have it that day, but the endless complaining about guys getting up a second time is completely over the top.

The team was stuck in the baseball operations stone ages before the Shapiro hire. I can't believe that he still faces so much derision from a good portion of the fanbase given how much he has accomplished towards modernizing the entire organization.

It just feels like that lone change would give a major boost to the bullpen results immediately.

It's just because AA left. The reality is AA went to the Dodgers and became a better executive and GM. He was a decent executive that became a really good executive. Atkins is a solid GM that works well with Shapiro. It worked out fine for both parties, but some can't let it go.

I was curious about Garcia's results during his second inning of work (or at least finishing an inning and then coming back for the next one) and he generally hasn't been very effective after the Jays at bat. He's been brought 4 times after sitting down between innings, and 2 of them have been very poor.

4/4 1st inning: retired all 3 hitters

2nd inning: retired 2 hitters, 1 single (nice outing, pulled at good time)

4/18 1st inning: retired both hitters

2nd inning: retired 1 batter, 2 singles (pulled in reasonable timeframe)

5/7 1st inning retired both batters

2nd inning retired 1 batter, 2 singles, 1 walk, 1 double (should have been pulled sooner)

5/13 1st inning retired 1 batter

2nd inning single (probably should have been called an error), 2 BB, 1 GO (should have been pulled sooner, command was obviously scattershot this inning)

Gonna need to go back a lot further before your sample size becomes meaningful. How was he last season in similar spots?

Chappy 4, Belt 5, Merrifield 6, Varsho 7. I don't know why Varsho is hitting in the cleanup ahead of Chappy.

Chapman is struggling a bit right now, he only has a 49 WRC+ for the month of May, vs Varsho who has a 162 WRC+ for the month of May.

I haven't looked at that, I was just more wondering how his relative performance looks this year in his second inning of work. In one of those outings it appears as though he may have fell victims to the BABIP gods, and there are two where his command was shaky during the second inning.

Yup numbers can change real quick. Could even make the case for Belt hitting cleanup right now. Could also swap George and Whit in the lineup, or even KK

Both Gurriel and Moreno are batting over .300 this year... just thought I'd mention that lol.

How many runs or hits would have occurred due to LGRs s*** D. Where would Moreno play, if he took Kirks and Jansen’s ABs, what do we do with them. Obviously trade value was highest with Moreno..

Lourdes would look pretty good in the middle of this lineup right now. Would not be opposed to trading for him midseason if the DBacks are clearly out of it.

Varsho has been so worth it for his defense and baserunning alone. Not to mention he’s been really good offensively this month after a slow start.

Moreno's .300 is about as empty as possible with little power and next to no walks, so I won't lose any sleep over that right now.

I remember some of the discussion at the time and I think it centred around a lot of the teams were an hour behind and it would damage tv ratings or something like that. But it was discussed.

Toronto is east of Cleveland, but Cleveland is east of Detroit.

Originally before Tampa Bay came into existence the East was 5 great, great franchises in order of greatness (with greatness score)

NY Yankees 98.7

Boston Red Sox 95.6

Toronto Blue Jays 89.2

Detroit Tigers 89.2

Baltimore Orioles 89.2

I can't really see why Toronto would have even considered the Central. At the time they would not have known the Yankees were about to embark on a 30 year run, Boston would be good 25/30 years or so, and they could not have foreseen the existence of TBR.

Paul Beeston also didn't realize he was a phony moron, and Cito Gaston was a moron to. If it wasn't for the fact that Pat Gillick left and Paul Beeston and Cito Gaston were massive morons everything would have been OK, even in the East. In the mid 90s there was a lot of low hanging fruit in analytics, Toronto had a great farm system, and all they had to do to be good in the late 90s was to read the 1988 Bill James baseball abstract like Billy Beane did.

If they read the abstract and realized that on base percentage was still under-appreciated, with their financial might they could have kept Alomar and Olerud and thrown Cito and Joe Carter into the sea, and started picking up under-rated on base guys and would have been fine.

This is so true. Cito HATED Olerud. The guy was a near Hall of Fame talent (he might have had 60 WAR if Cito didn't jerk his chain so much early on) and Cito ran him out of town.
