If Phelps makes the team he will be paid 1.75 Million Blue Jays Sign Seven Players To Minor League Deals By Steve Adams | November 29, 2021 at 1:54pm CDT The Blue Jays announced Monday that they’ve signed the following seven players to minor league deals: right-handers David Phelps, Jose De Leon and Casey Lawrence; outfielders Mallex Smith and Nathan Lukes; left-hander Matt Gage; and catcher Kellin Deglan. Phelps will earn a $1.75MM salary if he makes the club, tweets Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Hypothetical trade: Jays get: 3B/INF Jose Ramirez SP Shane Bieber Guardians get: SS Bo Bichette C Alejandro Kirk OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. P Nate Pearson plus mid level prospect Crazy trade proposal I know, but i’ve been thinking about it for a few days and it probably makes sense for both teams. Also checked trade value on that trade calculator site and the value is fairly even. Sign Corey Seager or one of the other FA Shortstops, Biggio plays 2nd. Don’t make fun of me please. I don't think it's a bad thing to be targetting those guys, but in your proposal you've created more holes than you're filling. What is more likely (not that this trade is actually likely) is that you'd not have Bo in that deal and both Moreno and Groshans would be in there instead.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 For me that is robbing Peter to pay Paul. So now you have your 3b, and you need to start looking for a SS of equal caliber.. The only way something like that works is if we sign a Story or Seager etc... However, I am inclined to agree we would not move Bo.. You’d also be getting Bieber though. But yeah im not saying its an amazing plan, but I think it would be a great way to make the lineup more diverse while dealing from a position of strength and also completely solidify the pitching staff.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I still have an old prospect chubb for De Leon, long past the days where it was reasonable to assume he'll be anything. For that reason, I approve

We’d be filling the hole at 3B with a better player than Bo. Creating a hole at SS yes, but I’d only do the deal after a Correa/Seager signing. Dealing from a position of strength with guys like Kirk and Gurriel. Guardians would want to do the deal because it would give them 3 cost-controlled above average bats that they can have in the lineup everyday. They get more payroll flexibility getting rid of Ramirez. Not sure they would want to deal Bieber, but they’d be getting Pearson as a replacement.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 No way I'm doing that for 2 years of Ramirez. 100% Jays are in a great spot right now. Surgical moves, not blockbuster is what is needed.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 No way I'm doing that for 2 years of Ramirez. Plus Bieber my dude, I wouldn’t do it for just Ramírez either. Anyways not gonna happen, just an idea. Everyone always talks about trading for Jose Ramirez but you need to give up good players in order to get good players. I think a Ramirez trade makes sense for the team if he’s not the only significant piece coming our way.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 He might be more expensive then JRam.. But man would I love to pry Jung away from the Rangers...
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Not sure how I feel about Kikuchi. Solid arm but if they're gonna push Pearson down to a 6th starter/swingman role, I want the guy coming in to be a legit difference-maker.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Sweet. Kikuchi as the 5th would be great
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Kikuchi throws hard from the left side, gets ground balls and K's a batter per inning. ERA estimators have always liked him. Might be the favourite for the American League Cy Young award if he signs in Toronto
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 He seems like a Matz type acquisition tbh. Low risk high reward
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Pearson threw 45 innings last year. Even if he's electric they're going to have to restrict his workload.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Kikuchi would be a fantastic signing

I mean, even optimistically, considering what the team would allow- how many innings would you pencil Pearson in for if he was the 5th SP?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Not surprised. Lefty who can throw in the mid 90s and misses bats at a decent clip. Pretty much the definition of the type of pitcher Atkins would give to Pete Walker for fixing.

This is a good and probably overlooked point. I would love to pencil him in as our #5 and dream about him finally realizing that massive potential but realistically, yeah, we're going to have to add a little more support in that rotation.

Pearson most likely a swingman, starting maybe 12 games but maxing out at 5 innings in any of them. Then another 40 or so innings out of the bullpen. That is, if everything goes well. Or maybe he is in Buffalo a good part of the season, but I hope not. He needs MLB seasoning.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 That is a great way to attract guys looking for a bounce back year.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 That is a great way to attract guys looking for a bounce back year. Such as? I'd like to see what Walker can do with Dylan Bundy, pitching out of the bullpen. A couple of ticks more on the FB could make all the difference.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Jays getting guys some serious cash! Gotta love it.

A couple of ticks more on the FB could make all the difference. Aside from the bullpen and the 5th starter job, we're pretty much all locked in to our current guys. This is assuming we will make a big splash for a 2B or 3B. We might be too good for players looking to bounce back lol

And at the same time would provide SP depth (#7 or 8 on this team).
