L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I don't mind it in a vacuum- a young team with a protected first round pick signing a veteran to fill a leadership role and put people in the stands. Philly has the funds to do so as well. I just don't think Bautista is the guy you would want filling role. Blast me for veteran presence if you feel the need- but there is certainly something to be said for surrounding a young core with a guy(s) who have been there, done that. Even if you can't sort it on Fangraphs.

Plenty of vets out there to fill that imaginary void that you believe in that would come way cheaper with no pick attached to them.

Plenty of vets out there to fill that imaginary void that you believe in that would come way cheaper with no pick attached to them. It all depends on how you feel about your young talent and how quickly you can turn things around. If they think Bautista can be a productive bat for 3 or 4 years the phillies could sign him to a contract for 3 years plus an option at a reasonable AAV. The Phillies literally have almost no money committed anymore. This is a team that can spend up to the luxury tax. If some of their young players made some big strides this year, they could go out the next couple off seasons and spend a ton of cash in free agency and the compensation won't be as much. It's a big gamble on a free agent that old, but there could be some out there that feel bautista isn't a typical 36 year old and he can maintain things until he's 40. You might also sign him to a multi year deal and if he bounces back you could probably trade him for more value than that pick.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Phillies could probably swap Bautista for a decent return at the deadline if he has a good year; probably more than a second round pick

His outfield ability is declining and he would be an expensive bat to pinch hit. Platoon at 1b and outfield but at the cost of a pick doesnt make sense.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 If Philly signs Bautista they will almost certainly trade him mid-season, especially if he bounces back.

Governator Community Moderator Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Blue jays could do the same With the 10/5 rule likely not.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 If I am Bautista, I would tell the jays franchise to go to hell for the way they have treated him, same with Edwin. We wont be seeing those two Bluejays Legend around for a very long time. Wonder what kind of precedent this sets for other Bluejays Stars with this current regime.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Wonder if the Mariners might make a play for Jose now that Seth Smith is gone. That outfield is nubs city.

They are trying to build a team and not a friendship. Who the f*** cares what anyone thinks as long as they win.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I have no idea what this team will do if it doesn't resign Bautista.

Ray Verified Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Yeah, I really wanted Dyson. Perfect platoon partner for Upton.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I have no idea what this team will do if it doesn't resign Bautista. Nothing. Winning has never been on the agenda for the current regime only excuse making We tried to sign Edwin We tried to sign Fowler Ect.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Sign Valbeuna and some bullpen help; trade for Puig

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Yep, trade for Puig and sign someone like Moss. I'd be fine with that. Don't know what the Dodgers would want for Puig, though. Maybe more than what the Jays would be willing to give.

Maybe we send the prospects to the Twins that get Dozier to Anaheim?

ColdPint Verified Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Shatkins is not moving prospects to bolster a team of old, declining veterans. Yep, it's just not their MO and anyone expecting us to making any significant and meaningful additions to the team that would require prospects is fooling themselves. My opinion of course.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Puig is 26 with three years of cheap control left (well, two years of cheap control and one year of arb after that). THat wouldn't be adding to an aging core, that would be giving the Jays a young hitter with upside. I agree that they won't be trading prospects for short-term gain, though.

Yeah exactly, I think we can all agree this front office won't sell the farm for short term gain, but Puig is just heading into what should be his prime age and has three years of control, with the first two being cheap as you mentioned. That's a worthwhile investment on a very talented athlete at our greatest position of need, assuming the prospect cost isn't insane.
