Andrew? Is that you?

Really though, I dont mind some of his pieces, he actually comes out with some pretty reasonable stuff. However, when he gets an idea or certain line of thinking in his head, he is unable or unwilling to accept any other view point. For example, once Edwin signed, Stoeten started a long rant about how Rogers is too cheap, and this would have never happened under better ownership. Which is a pretty short sighted and casual opinion.

I don't agree with everything he says, but that also goes for every single poster on this board.

I certainly do, and you are the most intolerant person on this board.

Quite the statement! But I'd expect personal bias to colour your view of things.

You can think what you want. You will not get far without introspection.

Yeah I get it, that was my point. You're stupid. /Ignored

Without going into how illogical your point is, all I can say is that being on your ignore list will be worn as a badge of honour.

It was a joke, dummy.

No way I do a 1 year deal unless it's for $15M. It's not like teams are jumping at the chance to sign him. I'd give him a 3 year $50M deal with a team option for a 4th. 20-15-15-20(Option)

What if Bats signs for 1 year 12m somewhere else in march? Will the Shatkins haters be out in full force again like they were with EE? Will people take a runny s*** on his agent? Will bats be labeled as greedy and egotistical?

Hmmmm.

Give up a comp pick and spend a good majority of whatever the team has left to spend this winter for one year of Bautista? F That. If they sign him it better be either a really cheap one year deal (think Nelson Cruz a few years ago) or a team friendly deal that gives the Jays an option or two. Otherwise, I'm sure they can spread the money around effectively with whatever is left even with a crap FA market (Moss, Valbuena).

We then get a 1st round pick for him.

Of course. Some people can't be pleased.

Probably not. Seems like this is all Bautista's doing.

Will bats be labeled as greedy and egotistical?

Isn't he already?

The hold up is probably apprension about paying $20M and late 1st round pick for a 2-win season.

well bautista is going to put a 4.5 win season up.....so they better hurry up and sign him.

Possible, but very unlikely.

Why would you put the defender worth 25 fewer runs in the position that has significantly more balls hit at them?

Is that true? Should you really put your worst OF in RF because more balls are hit there? I always thought your worst OF should be in LF.

I don't go to Stoeten for analysis, I go to him for pith, wit, and cynicism. He is the voice of Jays fans who actually have some idea of how baseball actually works and who care about the things that matter. I dare any of you to try to churn out that level of content for this many years. It could fill several books, and he didn't monetize it for a very long time. I respect his dedication and I enjoy his voice. I don't expect him to be Tom Tango and I wouldn't read him if he tried to be that.

I don't mind Stoeten either. His early stuff with Parkes was hilarious. His pod isn't bad, I actually like Fairservice quite a bit.

i'm a positive guy...what can I say. Steamer has him at 2.6, so a 2 win projection would be a tad negative..no?

I'm not projecting him at that (and I have no idea what the team is projecting) but my answer to ECJF asking why a 1 year deal for 18-20M hasn't been finished is that the team is afraid of paying 20M and a 1st round pick and getting 2 wins (or less) in return. Even if they're projecting him at 2.6 there'd be, what, 40% odds he comes in at 2 or less? I think they'd prefer to have him for multiple years if they're giving up the pick to get him.

I agree.....2 year deal it is.

By that logic, because so many outs are made at first base, we should have our top defender there.

Agree completely. If the FO is giving up a pick, it's at least going to be 1year plus an option, most likely 2 years plus an option.

Something like 2/35 with a 3rd year team option and buyout would be nice, and should work for both sides.

He said it like it was fact so I was wondering if it was some new line of sabremetric thinking. I think LF and RF are similar enough that if LF gets so many more outs that theory would make sense. I've never heard that before though.

I'm with you Term. Never thought about it that way but it makes sense. Strongest arm in RF was the strategy for years. I wonder if your better to put the better defender in LF regardless of arm strength. Now many times do you get to make the throw to 3rd anyway

Not really, as I don't think there's a generic "top defender" label that can be applied across all players as the skillset varies so greatly position-to-position.

I think the key is to put your best guys in the positions that suit their abilities. You could put a pylon at first base and do well, as long as the pylon can pick balls in the dirt.

Eventually teams will just start swapping LF and RF every AB based on matchups.

I feel like this is an idea that works much better in theory rather than practice.

What benefits you might gain in positional advantage, you may lose through the overall performance drop from the player who is the more defensively deficient of the two. You'd have to be a robot not to be negatively affected by constantly being reminded through the game via shifting that you're lousy defensively.

Theoretically if we had Dyson and Bautista, and Dozier comes up with a 15% oppo, how do you not just swap them?

That'd certainly tire your fielders faster depending on how often you did it. I think players would hate that.

Shifting in a way already does that.

Because unlike an infield shift where everybody moves over, swapping your good defensive outfielder with a lesser one is offensive and embarrassing to one of the players.
