Because unlike an infield shift where everybody moves over, swapping your good defensive outfielder with a lesser one is offensive and embarrassing to one of the players.

Just imagine how pissed Bautista would be.

That goes for a lot of players. Even the other players on the team would be embarrassed and angry on their behalf.

Don't we think guys like Michael Saunders are oblivious to how s***** they are defensively?

Bautista would probably be happy because he'd actually have a position to play.

"Weakside" Outfielder would be a whole new position for sluggers who have nowhere to play!

I'm half kidding but we all know shifting outfielders is going to happen to some degree eventually. I mean, not necessarily every AB but if you have a 15% oppo guy like Dozier, how does it make sense to leave Dyson in RF? It makes absolutely no sense.

Playing OF isn't just about catching balls. Arm strength for throws to 3B and home has always been a major consideration in who plays RF.

If only the board blog was 10% as successful as his!

I'd just call you Moogy and be done with it but the board blog was 1000000% more successful than his. It directly lead to two of its writers becoming infinitely more successful and influential in the baseball community than Stoeten will ever be.

'The sides did meet face-to-face at the winter meetings in early December, with the understanding that the Jays have other trade avenues to explore involving outfielders Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson of the Mets, Brett Gardner of the Yankees and more before a Bautista alternative can be considered. Nothing has changed there."

Thats the first time I've heard the Jays linked to Brett Gardiner.

He would be a great fit in Toronto. Doubt the Yankees trade him though to a division rival.

Pretty sure the distance from RF to home is the same as the distance from LF to home (except in fenway)...

How many throws to 3rd does a RF unleash a year?

A solid RF arm (even just the reputation) holds runners at 2nd whether he throws it or not.

Shatkins might possibly have offered any or all of these. If Bautista doesn't accept any of them then nothing will happen.

Option #2 would be best for the Jays me thinks.

He's arguably the best player in franchise history ..

A reasonable argument can be made for sure. He trails only Stieb and Halladay in total bWAR as a Jay (tied with Fernandez and 1 ahead of Delgado). In the past 7 seasons, Bautista averaged a wRC+ of 150 and averaged 4.8 fWAR.

In his best 7 seasons as a Jay, Delgado had average wRC+ of 147 and average fWAR of 4.7. Those are close, but Bautista gets the nod for post-season production, for which Delgado never got the chance with Jays.

Halladay averaged 5.4 fWAR in his best 7 season stretch with the Jays (2003 - 2009).

So particularly if looking only at a peak 7 year stretch as a Jay, Bautista probably only trails Halladay.

May I ask why you use two different metrics in WAR?

I'm not projecting him at that (and I have no idea what the team is projecting) but my answer to ECJF asking why a 1 year deal for 18-20M hasn't been finished is that the team is afraid of paying 20M and a 1st round pick and getting 2 wins (or less) in return. Even if they're projecting him at 2.6 there'd be, what, 40% odds he comes in at 2 or less? I think they'd prefer to have him for multiple years if they're giving up the pick to get him.

The logic regarding the value of the compensation pick is sound. BUT the conclusion that you should sign the player for more than 1 season to make up for the loss of the pick is debatable. This is particularly true with a 36 year old who may be going into steep decline. I would rather sacrifice the potential value of the draft pick in exchange for not having to commit more than 1 year to a player of that advanced age on a team full of other 30+ year olds. Keeping payroll powder dry for 2018 and beyond is worth the lost value of the pick.

Maybe the best scenario for the Jays regarding JB is 1 year + a team option (say 1 year $19 M, with a 2nd year $19M or $1M buyout).

because on baseball-reference you can go to the team page and they show a list of the all time franchise leaders in WAR. As far as I know fangraphs does not have that. I didn't bother to add up the Blue JAY ONLY fWAR manually, but I can if you insist :P

No, no, was just wondering why. Sound reason, lol.
