wamco Verified Member Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I'd prefer 2 years over 1 if we're not going to get a pick for him. Me too. 1 year wouldn't make much sense. Grandy or Bruce shouldn't cost much and wouldn't require a 1st round pick
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 This is a freaking disgrace. Jose is a franchise icon and is begging to come back. Show some loyalty FFS Shatkins. He's still got a couple years left.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I'd give him 3 years on a low AAV. 3 for 45 or something is what Beltran got a few years ago. I'd go two years if he wants a higher AAV. I'd put him in LF though and tell him to bring a 1B glove. We need his bat badly.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 There has to be some upside included in the deal for us to sign him, I think. Shatkins won't give up the comp pick for 1 year of Bautista when they could sign Moss or Valbuena and get 2/3rds of Jose's projected production or something like that. I think if there was a way to put a team option in there it would make more sense for us. Like ok, we'll give you 3/45M and give up the comp pick but years 2 and 3 are team options because we want you for 3 years but only if you're good. But Bautista will never go for that. Maybe we could put a buyout on those team options. Or maybe put incentives in there based on plate appearances. We need OF. He's projected for 3 WAR. He wants to come back. We should be able to work something out.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Jose will need to sign for like 2/28 for the projected surplus value to be anywhere close to the value of the pick.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 2/$30 wouldn't cripple us with the understanding that he will see very little time in the corner outfield, primarily 1st base, and some DH. He probably doesn't want 2 years. If he puts up 3 WAR this year he easily gets 20 Million next year on a 1 year deal so why would he take a lower AAV?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 The thing I don't get is why the hell did they offer Edwin $80 Million with the pick attached? That deal is a hell of a lot worse than 1/17 for Jose with the pick included.
justafan Verified Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 I think if you offer anything near that for JB to play 1st and/or DH, Eddie is a far better deal at 4 for $80. EE is way more exciting to watch. Plus, I think Joey wrecked his arm 2 years ago playing against the O's. What is a top 20 draft pick worth in $$? The pick is in the early 30s. Even with a wrecked arm Jose has been worth 5.8 WAR the last 2 years with a wRC+ of 136 16th best in baseball.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 ^mods Funny thing with the Dogg, is he always s*** on AA, loved the new Shatkins moves, and now cries vice-versa one year later... classic trolling.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 New front office has too much arrogance Why? For not offering an aging player with an obvious physical decline a multi year deal? I think Shapiro is right for not offering more than one year. As far as loyalty goes, i can see Shapiro upping the price to 1/20 if all else fails elsewhere.

I'm sure this has been talked about but who is logically offering Bautista a deal, especially for something like 3 years? It would be great if he returned for 1 year.

Would you rather spend money risking it on JB or let's say a potential long term rotation piece like Tyson Ross? I know this club doesn't have unlimited 'risk' money, but I would like to see them be all in on him.

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 I'd only take Ross if it was an incentive-laden deal.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 I'd only take Ross if it was an incentive-laden deal. Yeah, for peanuts on the AAV... everything else is his gravy.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Realistically, I'm waiting for the Birds to sign Jose and Blevins/Logan/Wood or Lopez, Wood wants to start, if he's an MLB depth starter, he could sign here.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Yeah, for peanuts on the AAV... everything else is his gravy. Three years, twelve-fifteen million. Worth the risk.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Three years, twelve-fifteen million. Worth the risk. Hard to pass that up. Even if he completely falls off the cliff (unlikely IMO given his skills) it wouldn't be crippling. Remember they just gave Morales 3/33, a guy who has even worse defensive ability than Bautista, and will likely be a worse hitter in the next 3 years.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Three years, twelve-fifteen million. Worth the risk. Too much, with incentives... a lower AAV.

Skills ain't worth s*** if he comes back as a hamburger... most do. Your opinion is on a wish and hare tale! Funny as you seem to think the Jays threw money away in signing Pearce at 6.5?
