May have bought into the increased BB/9 and velocity decline, despite him returning early from injury, and/or perhaps Grilli asked to be traded?

Yah maybe? Just seems like a s*** return given the reliever market these days on a player that has a good pedigree and was showing a turn around in his numbers that anyone that could see. I love it from our point of view...just seems odd from their side. Anyway....Yay us!

So why did Atlanta do this if they are eating most of his salary? Just to acquire a "B" level prospect?

Really not sure. Maybe just as a favour to Grilli and to create positive rapport with us.

But why? Shakes head... Not sure why we needed another crappy reliever for the pen. We got that covered in spades now. How is this guy better then some of the internal options we already have? Could not we have given Leblanc or Diamond a shot first, plus they are Left handed and pitch more then one inning at a time!!!

To add a previously successful reliever for almost no cost is a way better option than LeBlanc or Diamond. Grilli has a long track record of success and those guys don't. He may be in decline, but at least he can record major league outs. And if he absolutely can't then it doesn't matter and you can eventually have your AAAA trash fill in.

Good deal. There is some upside to the deal if Grilli can perform closer to his previous track record. And if he doesn't, is only Sean Ratcliffe.

I'm thinking his age had something to do with it as well, sort of like a LaTroy Hawkins situation. Get what you can when you can type of thing.

Personally I'm happy. The more geezers on the team, the less ancient I feel.

As long as they can make you feel good about yourself, that's all that matters right.

Isn't that kind of the purpose of all sports teams, to make us feel better by entertaining us? Enjoy the highs as it were? Isn't that largely the reason anyone is a fan?

What an odd thing to say.

That plus merely opening up the roster spot I suppose.

Grilli's done. I see this as being a waste of a roster spot... Why even bother? The guys gonna be easy pickings in these AL East bandboxes.

He was fine. He's the new Hawkins, and he's been pitching well lately. Relax

He hit 94 with the fastball, was encouraging to see after reports he lost 2 mph

He was fine? Guys 39 now after coming back from a major injury. His numbers in that pitcher friendly Atlanta park are garbage. The Braves couldn't wait to cut bait with him. Don't you think if they figured he'd bounce back that they would have waited a month or 2 to net a useful return for their rebuild without having to eat any salary?

My guess is they know he's done and just wanna prevent any future headaches with the guy.

I'm all for improving the pen as it needs a boost, but Jason Grilli is not the answer. Why even bother? It reminds me of when AA would bring in guys who were clearly done like Ramon Ortiz just hoping to squeeze a little water from a stone.

Even if he's the number 6 or 7 guy in the pen he's valuable as a leader out there in the pen much like Hawkins was last year. A guy who help mentor Baigini/Osuna is never a bad thing.

An Achillies injury usually takes a year to be fully recovered and he says he isn't fully healthy yet so perhaps there is more upside and he regains his form.

One of the factors for moving him was him being pretty vocal about his usage out the bullpen and the fact the Braves were in pure rebuilding mode. I'm sure this won't come out but I wouldn't doubt it if he was asking to be moved asap. With a team full of youngsters, you don't want a whiny vet impacting their minds in a negative way.

First part doesn't make a lot of sense to me imo, cuz if they gave up on him completely, they would have atleast tried to get rid of his salary cuz they can still sell that he will bounce back. In your opinion, the guy was so toxic that they jumped at the first chance to eat his salary and acquire a relative nobody in return (Sean Ratcliffe) just to be rid of him...From his interview and from everything else I've seen, seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Imo this looks like Atlanta had nothing to gain from keeping him or letting him go, he's 39 let him have a chance at winning.

He should be #4 in our BP behind Storen, Cecil, and Osuna.

In any case I don't understand why this would piss you off so much.

It's a free chance to catch lightning in a bottle - nothing more. I hope you cut bait with this board as quickly as the Braves cut bait with Grilli.

Gibby really threw him into the deep end last night. I was surprised he would bring him in against a SH like Beltran the way he has been hitting the ball and with his awful numbers against LHH. Beltran stung it pretty well, but right to Pillar. We got a bit lucky on that one. Id like to see him used more just against a tough RHH (a roogy) until we really see what he has left.

That's Gibby's m.o. though. Trial and error bullpen management.

Joe Biagini might have something to say about that...in no way, shape or form would I be putting Storen in over Biagini. Same thing goes for Grilli until he proves himself. Biagini has earned that right.

It is. And with the exception of Leon/Souza this year and a few other spots he has done ok managing a pen of mostly unacheievers to this point.

I'm not saying he's toxic, I just think that Atlanta realized that he was outta gas and that they'd be lucky to get anything for him and if they wait much longer might not be able to. But you have a point, hopefully he can act as a mentor to some of the younger guys while he's here.

Absolutely. Gibby being Gibby. We got a little lucky with that outcome. Let's see what this guy can give us before putting him in high leverage situations. We can't afford to be throwing games away late in the game at this point in the season.

I will go on record and say grilli will be one of our better relievers going forward and especially during the summer.

Hmm... doubtful. But I hope you're right

It's an 8 man pen right now, you only have to be 4th best to be considered one of the better ones. Not exactly a stretch
