burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Can someone bump this thread if Ratcliffe resigns with us. Hes nothing but I still think it would be hillarious. The Braves might have been able to get a decent return if they held onto him until July. Mind boggling. I'm not so sure Grili performs the same if he's in Atlanta. He's said he's gained a whole lot of energy knowing he's now in a playoff race compared to playing out the games in Atlanta. Obviously there is more to it than that but at the same time I think there is truth to players not giving it 100% on bad teams.

But yea I suppose moving to a team expected to make the playoffs gives you that extra push. He has really embraced the city and being a Blue Jay.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I really don't think Grilli is worried about his next contract at 39, with north of 20M in career earnings. f***, what a life that would be. Career bullpen guy who retires at 40 and has financial security the rest of his life.

I don't see any reason why he would retire unless hes in pain.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Well he's actually got a 3M option for next year which could be picked up. If he finishes the year strong thats a nice option to have.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 2.8 I guess with a 200k buyout. Seems like a no brainer.

That's the best thing about this. Unless he retires, that option will almost certainly be exercised, and he barely makes any money. No idea why Atlanta unloaded him for free when they did.

Feels like a Shatkins esque move for years to come.

BTS Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Does that mean it's a player option? Team option.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Team option. Nice. If he keeps this up, what a no brainer.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Grilli's been ridiculous since he's been here. and even on the season he's 4th in the majors in K/9.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Bump. Under the radar move. FIP under 3 with 13Ks/9. BB/9 at 3. Can't fap enough about the job he has done for us and love the fire he still has.

Could not have worked out better.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 He has more or less made that option pick up guaranteed at this point hasn't he?
43211234 Verified Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Sean Ratcliffe who he play for? Hasn't signed with anyone. At least not a major league team. http://m.mlb.com/player/641996/sean-ratcliffe
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Atlanta's front office is so bad. They have $30M to waste on Matt Kemp, but couldn't find $2M to pay Grilli while he re-establishes his value. He's a borerline elite reliever, and would have returned actual value at the deadline, especially with that cheap option year.
King Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Sean Ratcliffe who he play for? He's playing for the Bowmanville Bandits, http://www.leaguelineup.com/player_baseball.asp?url=bowmanvillebandits&playerid=11398070&teamid=5030717 Pitched one appearance on July 24th where he went 5IP 2H 3R 0ER 7BB 9K

It should be noted that Atlanta picked up the remainder of Grilli's salary in the trade. While stupid, their decision wasn't based on finances.

Just checked and Bowmanville isn't in the tourney. Small world. Great trade

vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I forgot that. What the hell was their motivation for this deal? They were worried he might turn things around and win them a game or two.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I forgot that. What the hell was their motivation for this deal? Atlanta said they were going to DFA him if they found no trading partner. They wanted to give the opportunity for other guys to get innings out of the pen.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 How much would Grilli have been worth at the deadline (if he was throwing like he is now)?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Author Posted August 15, 2016 How much would Grilli have been worth at the deadline (if he was throwing like he is now)? something in between what the Yankees got for Chapman and Miller.
