Did you hear of the deal that Cleveland already turned down from us?

Yea you are right, its not like AA ever circles back and tries to make a new deal to get the player he wants.

I've seen this idea discussed randomly a few times in various threads, but I figured it deserved its own thread.

Personally, I believe his pitch selection, poise, repeatable delivery, command, and strikeout stuff would be best used in our starting 5 next year, but I can understand the flip side, with keeping him as the closer, since he doesn't fold to pressure.

What are your thoughts? Personally, I could see his ceiling in the Rotation as a high strikeout, low xFIP guy.

Having Osuna as the closer would be a waste. He would be a bigger benefit to the team as a starter. But the Jays also need to invest on support. Right now you have only Stroman, Hutch for the rotation next year, team will likely bring back Dickey and putting Osuna gives you 4. You need to get at least a Zimmerman or Shark for this team in the offseason, if not another one pitcher still on top.

I don't expect the team to trade Hutch when his value is at his lowest but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened either.

Ok, given the scenario, if they used him as a starter next year, how many innings could we realistically expect from him?

I know AA said he doesn't believe in innings caps anymore, but it would still be a pretty huge jump from the 70 or so he will work when 2015 is all said and done lol.

Does 130IP seem plausible or could he work more/less?

He has the arsenal to start. Would probably sit ~93, slider and changeup both look plus in relief, most of the time. No reason he couldn't develop a decent two-seamer.

The only reason not to try him as a SP might be his mechanics. He has a big elbow lift and his arm is late. It's noticeable even in real time video. Helps him throw hard but probably increases stress on his elbow.

Now, there's more to mechanics than elbows and arms. Things like when his shoulder turn happens and how stiff his front leg is also impact stress on the arm, and thus durability. He could have decent mechanics all things considered. But if the team doesn't think his mechanics look clean, then he should probably be left in the bullpen. Better to have a healthy reliever than a starter on the operating table.

So it depends on the bio-mechanical analysis!

I remember reading a quote from him saying he didn't want to start, he prefers relieving. Not sure if it was taken out of context but it puzzled me at the time of reading it as to why he wouldn't want to start.

Sounds like he has a preference for being a relief pitcher but he'll do whatever the org. tells him to do.

Yes. Sanchez and Cecil late guys

1-Carrasco (Hutchison to Indians)

2-Stroman

3-Estrada

4-Osuna

5-Dickey

If only we could get Carrasco without giving up Stroman or Osuna Ang. If only Ang. Eww Estrada? Why? I agree to qualify him but mostly because the Jays can milk a pick off him. He is likely going for a long term contract, the final one of his career likely, this offseason. I can see Arizona giving him $45 for 3 years or something stupid.

I am still on the trade Sanchez bandwagon. His value *should* be high after the season he had and if all we are really expecting of him is being a reviler, you can invest / find those in the FA market or via trade. If he can be in a trade that gets you a top of the rotation type pitcher, you pull the trigger.

I would be very surprised. Why would we trade rotation depth? There are literally zero needs on the position player side. I'd be happy with something like this:

Stroman

Anderson/Kazmir/Samardzija

Dickey

Hutchison

Osuna/Sanchez

Maybe a Brandon Beachy type to stash in AAA or as a long man.

Of course he should be tried out as a starter, his stuff is incredible and his command is plus. Unfortunately, I don't think he wants to be a starter any more. He has a lucrative niche where he is succeeding, and he wants to stay there.

Osuna likes the bullpen and Sanchez likes starting, but both are better doing the opposite of what they like.

The problem with Osuna is the jump in innings next year as a starter. Can his arm handle it?

They would have to limit him, obviously.

35.1 innings in 2014

75.1 and counting this year

They would have to use him as the 5th SP, skip a lot of his starts, watch his pitch counts, piggy back him with someone perhaps, move him to the pen later in the year, and possibly even shut him down.

Marcus Stroman

Jordan Zimmerman

RA Dickey

Anderson/Leake

Hutchison/Osuna/Sanchez

A lot if "if's" here but IF Rogers sees the value in signing Price what is wrong with keeping Osuna and Sanchez in the pen along with Cecil.

The rotation would still potentially be good,

Price

Stroman

Hutchison

Dickey

(Estrada 2.0) AA will find someone.

with a top 3 back end if you include Cecil

I know most here don't believe in Sanchez as a starter. I'm curious if the new cutter/slider he developed late (which appears to be a plus pitch) changes your opinion. I fully expect the answer is no because his control is still a massive issue, but I'm curious.

An even bigger issue is his struggles against left handed batters...Hopefully the cutter will start to tame their success against him.
