Blue Jays hitters in 2015: 44.8% GB%

Blue Jays pitchers in 2015: 43.7% GB%

The Blue Jays are not currently a team that would benefit from better outcomes on ground balls. If they got Brett Anderson, that would shift slightly, but you still have to actually outbid 29 other teams for him and the advantages would probably be more slight than you'd expect. Perhaps an extra run or two over the course of the season.

Well if Estrada leaves that number will obviously go up and with Stroman hopefully pitching a full season it go up as well. I remember hearing AA talk about how Stro is a perfect fit for the ballpark so I think he understands the advantage it is to have GB pitchers.

With having to bring in at least 2 SP you can make it a significant advantage.

How do you want to handle these offseason threads, o2? The free agent pitching thread is getting run and people like talking about the pitchers individually. Should someone also create a free agent hitting thread?

The one thing that's clear is that Blue Jays roster manipulation goes in BTS's offseason roster thread.

I almost didn't start a new thread for pitching, but I think it's the major focus of the offseason so deserved its own.

AA build the entire 2015 roster though. We can't assume that the skills he values will drastically change this winter. The Blue Jays do not emphasize getting ground balls at a rate that exceeds what their hitters hit ground balls at and so they should be persuaded by aesthetics and the wishes of their players.

Also, the advantage to a pitcher being ground ball oriented in a park whose home run factor is not vastly different from its runs factor is very slight. Stroman is a good pitcher and his ground ball rate is great. His value isn't significantly improved by Rogers Centre or by the Jays infield defence.

Well to be fair I don't think going in to the season AA knew how the turf would play so you can't fault him for how he built the pitching staff. And my point is that Roger's Centre turns more groundballs to outs than any other park so it is an advantage to go after GB pitchers.

I wish I could find park BABIP rates but just on FG looking at Blue Jay's pitchers numbers I found:

Blue Jays pitchers have a .258 BABIP at home which is significantly lower than any other team. Also have a .299 BABIP on the road which is more in line with league average.

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=2&season=2015&month=15&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=2,d

If you look at Aaron Sanchez's splits he has a .227 BABIP at home (62.3 GB%) and a .274 on the road (58.3 GB%)

Now the there could be some noise in those numbers since you are only looking at 1 season of data but I think with such a big difference its safe to say that RC turns Groundballs into outs more often than any other park.

What's with the Chase Anderson obsession? lol

I am hoping that someone who works for the Jays, maybe a dumb bot, will read this, get AA drunk, whisper sweet nothings, call Stewart himself pending to be AA and get er done.

Joking aside, no idea! I should probably find a new pitcher. :<

FWIW, King, GD and North were all over Chase Anderson prior to this season. Howie favourite.

Bruce Arthur just called FIP the stat that describes "how the ball comes off the bat" and questioned how much Dioner Navarro had to do with it on TSN Drive

Who is Bruce Arthur and why is TSN covering baseball.

a good writer when he's not talking about baseball and because they have literally no content since Rogers f***ed them

We have added depth to our rotation. We are I believe 4 deep now in Stroman, Estrada, Dickie & Happ. Chaves and Hutchinson provide depth in case of injury.

Do you believe we will still be in on a Tier 1 Pitcher? Or like me believe it will now be Tier 2?

I say its from the list of

Zimmermann, Gillardo, Chen, Samardzija, Iwakuma

Who else do you believe could be on our radar?
