Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Source: Jays made an offer to Santana, "well below expectations"

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Might as well not even make an offer if there is absolutely no chance the player will accept. All this does is make us a laughing stock among players and agents.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 A contract " well below expectations" is the only contract i would be okay with it. Let's move on. We don't want Ervin. Ervin doesn't want our price.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Really looking forward to Santana signing with an AL team and pitching 30 angry shutout innings against the Jays this year!
Doc Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Seems like he pitches shutouts against all the time anyways.

Waiting out the market..f***ing goon. He traded assests for overpriced free agent contracts and he's honestly commenting on waiting for good value for players..he more full of s*** than the boyfriend who comes home drunk, smelling of perfume and claiming he was just hanging out with his boys
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 AA will only sign free agents to 1-year $0 contracts, meanwhile, casual fans continue to lap up the "nobody wants to sign in Toronto" spin. Gee, I wonder why free agents aren't lining up to come here.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Need pics to determine whether this enhances the offer or causes despair. Everything I know about Angrioter tells me you don't want a face pic.

JaysRap Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Seriously though, AA's negotiation tactics are an interesting topic of discussion. We've seen him swing shockingly cheap deals with Encarnacion (3/31 + option), Cabrera (2/16), and Escobar (2/10 + options). These deals, especially the extensions, were far below expectations, and it makes you wonder what kind of insulting offer the team opened with to settle at such a low rate. I completely buy the stories about AA operating similarly on the FA market, and in the case of Melky it seems to have worked, but it would also explain why we hear so often about the players who are offered "what we thought was fair value" only to sign elsewhere. Getting good talent on the cheap is a great thing, but maybe lowball offers like this are the reason why, for the most part, free agents won't play ball, forcing the team to trade for talent instead of signing it? AA seems to think that he can cheap out all the time to build this roster, whether it's years or dollars or both. That won't fly when you need to swing big for valuable free agents.

There was also the story this offseason about how AA was shocked he wasn't given a chance to make an offer for Fister. Whoever the writer was (can't remember) mentioned how AA's trade proposals in the past had alienated a lot of the other GM's, including Dombrowski. That could explain why he whiffed on Fister as well as not being able to get Anderson, Samardzija, or anyone else.
JaysRap Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 http://d3j5vwomefv46c.cloudfront.net/photos/large/773114299.gif I feel the same way.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Asking price to Pittsburgh for Lind was reportedly Neil Walker. I'm surprised Huntington didn't die laughing
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 If Dombrowski is convinced AA is going to offer him Goins and Cecil for Fister, why even make the call? To be fair, Dombrowski got 3 bags of balls for Fister... Intentionally ..for some reaosn
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Might as well not even make an offer if there is absolutely no chance the player will accept. All this does is make us a laughing stock among players and agents. token offers is what they do to calm the fringe fan base. it's happened repeatedly over AA's tenure. the other one is when they straight out lie about offers. IE Beltran... smoke and mirrors...
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Was there actually conclusive evidence that they offered Beltran 2/26 or more before 2012? Beltran came out and said he never got an offer.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Yeah. AFAIK that rumour started when AA said at state of the franchise that they made offers on a couple free agents for similar annual salary as what they got, but the players signed elsewhere. People just assumed it was Beltran. however it was intended, it made Beltran feel he had to make a statement saying he nor his agent had received any offers from the Jays.
leaffie Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 According to Kennedy on MLB, the Tigers wanted Robbie Ray. They targeted him, and didn't talk to anyone else about the Fister trade.

Ok, now you are just getting stupid. None of those deals were "shockingly cheap" when they were made.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Not quite sure why you play the victim card so often, when you're the one who initiates such action with response like that. For one, they were shockingly cheap, and I don't think anyone ever said a bad word about any of those contracts (IIRC, many thought even Melky would be able to provide value on that contract, and still can). Maybe the deals were a bit of a gamble, but they were still well below market value.

The wins have perse value, if you are not willing to pay you will not be successful. The tactic of "despair" is a good tactic in a free agency full of s*** like this (Ubaldo 30s, Ervin 30s dingers, Garza-injury , Arroyo 40s, Drew pick # 40-45); if Alex use this tactic in free agency with names like Scherzer, Lester, Rasmus, Cueto, Masterson, Shields, Headley, Hanley, Sandoval then he would be a very inefficient GM.
