Teams are just completely forgoing the back end of the bad contracts and throwing out silly values for the short term. Bo basically made half of what he was projected to get over 8 years in a 3 year deal. Yup and he can still sign a long-term when he hits free agency again at age 30. This sucks, i wonder if 8/250 would have been enough
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Apparently he gets 5M if he opts out too. Depending on the breakdown, he may have just gotten 47M for one year. Spanky__99, Stangstag and Orgfiller 3
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I hope we don’t massively overpay for Bellinger now…

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I'm not assuming Bo will be bad at 3B. If someone can hang at SS at all, they can probably play an average 3B. Spanky__99 1

There are plenty of very good third basemen with similar arm strength. I think accuracy may prove to be a bigger concern although I thought Bo had largely cleaned up the throwing errors from earlier in his career so he may prove to be just fine at third base.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I'd have taken Bo on that deal all day long.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 How much does Dylan Cease get if he’s still available in free agency at this point? 3/140? Ross Atkins and team with some excellent timing locking him down early to reasonable terms. abola2121, BatFlip, Terminator and 3 others 6
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 It's Nightengale, so take it for what it is.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 That Okamoto signing looks really friggin' good in retrospect too. Bo making 42 mil this year Okamoto making 15 Both are playing 3B Bo will need to put up something like a 9 WAR season to win the WAR per dollar comparison lmao JaysForever, spats, BatFlip and 3 others 4 2

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Bo's deal also includes $5 million dollar opt out bonus. So if he opts out he's getting $47 million for one year!
sliderguy35 Verified Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 i wonder if the plan is to generally have schneider operate as the strong / weak side of 2 different platoons considering how neutral his splits have been over his career. playing more 2B against righties to prevent ernie from having to play against every righty & let him come in as a defensive replacement playing more OF against lefties to spell barger against some of the tougher left handers also wouldn't discount the possibility of a return if bo has a great season & opts out after 2026, lotta money coming off the books and not a lot of young middle infield talent in the system outside of nimmala & jojo (neither of which are 2nd basemen) Spanky__99 1

I think Cease still signs a 5 or 7-year deal from someone. Pitchers are more inclined to seek long-term deals rather than short-term contracts, given the inherent injury risk.
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I gotta admit, I wanted Bo back as 2b was a pivotal position, but I also wanted a healthy Bo who's good for 140 games. Less likely.

He now has Lindor on his left and his replacing Vientos at 3rd. Something tells me they'll be perfectly happy with his defense. Spanky__99 1
Governator Community Moderator Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Hot damn.... missing out on both is painful. The good news is both went to NL teams and this isn't us vs Dodgers or us vs Mets in any capacity. We are a better team than we were last year, Bo & Tucker hit the market at the perfect time with no real positional player stars coming to market for a few years. I'm happy for Bo to be honest, we weren't going to pay that and he got his bag. He might be back in a few years, who knows. Spanky__99 and jaysblue 2

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I might be alone on this, but I like the NBA style contracts that MLB players are signing for (higher AAV, fewer years). You can make exceptions here and there, but I'd much rather have <5 years of a player in his latter prime than 10+ where you're eating an unknown number of dead years. Bo getting $126M over 3 years is so much better than $200M over 7, too. Even if he doesn't opt out and goes Tim Anderson over the next 3 years, he still made out better than had he taken the Phillies offer.

However if you really want to get into the weeds you could argue about the sample size adjustments. What about Barger at second base sometimes? Then you get a Lukes/Varsho/Satlander/Giminez/Barger all in against a tough righty, and find out if this is feasible in the case of playoff weirdness or long term injury to Giminez or Clement. As a 'casual' I totally get that Barger doesn't have great range, but World Series Bo on one knee didn't have great range either. It seems like in the playoffs they were willing to do non-perfect defense first part of games, so you wonder if Barger at second first half of a game is do-able.

Funky Verified Member Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I guess if we pivot to Bellinger and we don’t have to worry about Tucker coming, straw and his money can be shipped out also protect us against Varsho walking in the off-season Definitely not my first choice but decent option with all the positions he plays. max silver, Spanky__99 and Stangstag 3

Its frustrating that we always seem 1 more piece away from having a perfect offseason. Like yes this was a great offseason, but feels like we needed 1 finishing touch to put the cherry on top. Kinda feels like we may be done. jaysblue 1
