They tried extending him numerous times, he didn't want to listen at that time.

I don't get why so many people blame the FO completely that he's not signed when its exceptionally clear he was never going to sign any extension prior to FA unless it was a massive overpay. That's the FOs fault for not doing that? Really?

And here comes the parade of nit wits who will claim the Jays FO should have traded Vlad if he wasn't willing to talk extension at an earlier date.

If you couldn't get him to sign at a number you were comfortable with, last trade deadline should have been the furthest you go with him. You make your final offer and either he signs or you trade him for a haul of assets.

That's assuming you could get anyone to give up a "haul of assets" for a 1B who had just put up 3.3 and 1.3 fWAR the previous two seasons and would only be 1.5 seasons away from obviously testing the market because he's clearly over valuing himself.

Much more likely all you get is a pile of lottery tickets than anything of substance.

Are people really defending the front office if Vlad walks away for nothing but a comp pick? It is your friggin job to manage your assets.

Padres were able to trade FOR and then trade AWAY a much better player in Soto once they knew they weren't going to sign any sort of extension.  The latest this should have gone is the start of this past free agency.  These little league excuses are hilarious lol.

Why are the Padres the model?

Are the Astros a really dumb org for letting Cole, Bregman, Correa, Springer, all walk?

Loser teams are the ones who need to desperately trade players before they become free agents.

Remember when Boston HAD to "manage their asset" and trade Mookie Betts before he walked and they ended up with Verdugo and Jeter Downs? lol.

According to my sources, Toronto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are doing everything they can to reach an agreement before Opening Day. They were in discussions today, and my source says that they were talking about more than $550M for around 14 to 15 years. #Toronto #VladimirGuerreroJr

No idea if this guy is on the Hector Gomez/Carlos Baerga/Jon Morosi scale, or actually credible, but hope he's wrong here. I don't even care about the total value, a 14-15 year deal for a 1B who already resembles a DH at age 25 is insanity.

Astros were too busy winning world series titles and actually contending every year while we just finished 6th last in the MLB after not winning a single playoff game with this core ever lol.

And Soto was just an example since his term will look similar to Vladdys.

That contract must CLEARLY have a lot of deferrals included or else I'm going to puke.

Key words here being "a much better player in Soto". It's a lot easier to get value for a player when he actually plays like a superstar more consistently, unlike Vladito. No point in trading him for a pile of crap just to avoid him walking away as free agent.

Transcribing Arden Zwelling on the JD Bunkis podcast:

Quote

“They asked Addison Barger to make some adjustments last year that were just not advantageous to him at all, and he hated them, he didn’t like it. He was fighting against his natural muscle memory and how he’s comfortable at the plate. Then he talked to Pop and Lou about it, and they were like ‘alright forget all that’, go back to how you hit and what got you to the big leagues, we’ll work within that, and Addison was like ‘say no more’.”

This is about 10 days after this quote from Davis Schneider:

Quote

“I feel like I was searching for hits last year, trying to poke stuff instead of trying to get my best swing off,” Schneider said. “I wasn’t focused on doing damage. I was searching for singles and stuff like that. That’s not my game. Getting on base and extra-base hits, that’s where I hold value.”

I was screaming last year about something being very wrong with the offense approach the past couple years, but people were saying i was wrong and overreacting.

I won’t be gaslit anymore, Don Mattingly totally f***ed up our offense the last 2 seasons.

Springer, Varsho, Kirk, Bo, etc all had their approach changed for the worse. Less whiffs but also less power.

Juan Soto has literally been twice as valuable as Vlad, and all the Padres could get back for him was a few years of a number 2 starter and some spare parts. What would Vlad even bring back after the mediocre back to back seasons of 2022/2023? The people offering up this type of criticism are ignoring how damn inconsistent the guy has been and acting like 2021 and 2024 are the rule rather than the exception.

It was a damn example... rather than focusing on managing the asset being a Shatkins problem, the same people want to focus on the wrong thing here.  No one's saying the Jays should get the same value for Soto, it's that they should get what the market dictates if they believe they're so far apart.

Now with what Shapiro has said recently, he thinks they're "close" and will get it done.  The Jays aren't about to throw 500M or so at Vladdy for nothing.

Anything is better than watching his fat ass walk away after the season.

This team is not good enough to ride out the season with him nor enough of a destination market to replace him. Teams like Toronto have to trade assets they aren't likely to re-sign unless they are stacked and in the midst of a legitimate World Series contending window.

According to you the Dodgers are the only World Series contender so everyone else should just pack it in. An entire league that’s rebuilding sure would be a barrel of monkeys.

It seems very apparent that the team preferred to sign Vlad long term but was waiting for him to prove that he wasn’t a single year flash in the pan and could recreate the 2021 success. Vlad finally proved he could be an elite offensive performer for a second season and showed that he’s worth offering an extension to, He sure as hell hadn’t shown that to be the case after 2022 and 2023 as he had only produced a single season commensurate with his talent level and was looking for a mega contract that he hadn’t come close to earning.

For Spanky: No fantasy thread I see, so will post here that you got that extra $25 coming your way. Sorry to bail on the league the last month but things have just been busy and lots of traveling. I didn’t actually even renew my baseball leagues. Until the next time, douche:)

It's 50, douche. Also, you were 33 GB with a month to go, lmao.

Up it, puppet!

Well then forget about my expectations, do you see this Blue Jays team as a legitimate World Series contender? Even the most blind and loyal supporter can't be that oblivious to this team's shortcomings. It's a matter of playing the odds, odds are pretty low that this team competes for a World Series.

Barring multiple breakouts and/or resurgences this team almost certainly won’t be a World Series contender. I’d still rather see competitive teams attempt to have playoff success vs a constant cycle of rebuilding attempting to build a perfect team. Nearly every team in the sport aside from the Dodgers has a ton of holes and it’s not like they have been some sort of playoff dynasty either as regular season success means little once the playoffs start.

Realistically every team in baseball has to go through cycles. Certain teams have to do it more and we're one of those teams. This is about asset management and hoping that significant talent lines up for one really strong window, like in 2015 and '16 and then again in 2021. Those were windows of opportunity where the talent seemed to line up, in the case of '21 the front office didn't do enough early enough to fix the bullpen. This current roster is a complete Frankenstein stuck in mediocrity, that's the worst place to be.
