Some guys are made for the post season in every sport. Every year its the same thing... doesn't matter how regular season was, playoffs they elevate. I have no doubt thats Max and he needs to be in there It's not 2019. This is the kind of thinking I'm hoping the Blue Jays avoid. Perhaps take a look at Sherzer post season in 2022 (Mets) and 2023 (Rangers). You want that? Hard pass. SeranthonySantander, Wake n bake, Stangstag and 2 others 5
SeranthonySantander Verified Member Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 I'm not mad at Max for blowing his recent games that we all knew he would blow, he gets a pass because of his history and it really just looks like he wants to be hanging out in a winning dugout. I don't think he'd be upset if he doesn't play. Give him a couple innings if our bullpen is taxed. L54 and Stangstag 2

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 The Blue Jays are a slave to projections. Rightly so. I wonder what would project better as the SP4 - Scherzer or the Varland+Lauer combo?

This is 41 year old Max Scherzer. I've seen enough through the end of the year that he belongs in the clubhouse with his old war stories for the kids. I'd love to be wrong, but I wouldn't be throwing him out there, even with the thin options we have. Stangstag 1
GoBlue41 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 I hope the Jays enjoy the underdog role, because I've been seeing a whole lot of predictions out there and not many (if any) of the prognosticators believe in the Jays. That no respect chip on their shoulders might just have to carry them through.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 I wasn't able the join the party here as I was driving back from the states all day but what a way to the end the season. Can't wait now for the Yankees/Sox series, I really hope the Sox rough up the Yankees a bit even if they lose the series I'm fine with it. As for us... Gausman, Bieber and Yesavage. I'd rather see Lauer/BP throw over Scherzer or Bassit. Either way, whoever it is and whatever the circumstance, I just hope it's Schneider making all of the calls and not Atkins playing puppeteer again. Gen.Disarray, Brownie19, Stangstag and 1 other 3 1
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 The issue with Bassitt is you'd likely be starting him on the road in Game 3 or 4 (Game 4 I'd assume). I think I'd rather go Varland/Lauer. Unfortunately, I don't think you can start Scherzer. I think the only way he starts is if there's a situation where someone gets hurt or we're getting rocked and he comes out of the pen and pitches really well, which opens the door for him to start a future game. Seems unlikely. It will be very interesting to see how they play this. Could he piggyback with Trey? I guess maybe? abola2121, Stangstag and Gen.Disarray 3

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 Im a believer in you put your best players right away and worry about future games as it comes, but the Jays do have a tendency to overthink (especially in the playoffs). Do you think there's a possibility the Jays line their pitching like to get Bassitt at home instead of the road? Game 1: Bieber Game 2: Bassitt/Lauer piggy back Game 3: Gausman Game 4: Yesavage Game 5: Bieber

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 If Bassitt was pitching great over the past couple of weeks, I could see them doing this, but it seems highly unlikely they would since Bassitt has been on the IL.

The potential for both of them to pitch twice in a series (if necessary) is significantly more important than whatever home/road splits our SP3 and below have. I think Yesavage is also clearly trending as the game 3 starter, I think you can read a lot into how they scheduled the pitching matchups for the crucial division clinching series against the Rays. Gausman-Bieber-Yesavage are the top 3. BatFlip, jaysblue, Governator and 3 others 6

Game 1: Bieber Game 2: Bassitt/Lauer piggy back Game 3: Gausman Game 4: Yesavage Game 5: Bieber I don't think they would go this far. Bassitt's road numbers are highly skewed by two really bad games he had, one especially against Boston. It's not like he hasn't pitched well on the road at all even if he still has been a better home pitcher. I think games 1 and 2 will be exactly who we expect. I think where it gets interesting is games 3 and 4. Will they use an opener for one or both games? Will one of them be a full bullpen game? Do they trust Yesavage to be a starter or bulk guy for one of those games? What role, if any, does Scherzer play? Would you rather give more innings to Lauer over Bassitt? I personally think Yesavage starts game 3, or is the bulk guy after an opener. Game 4 is the biggest question mark to me.

Gausman-Bieber-Yesavage are the top 3. Gausman and Bieber won't both pitch twice in a 5 game series. It would require the game one pitcher to pitch on three days rest and they are not going to do that with either one of these guys. If anything they prefer to pitch these guys with more rest, Bieber coming off of major surgery and Gausman because of velocity issues related to rest. Besides Gausman and even Bieber right now are not at the level where pitching them is any better than a bullpen game. Neither of them is a Crochet or Skubal. Spanky__99 1
