Interesting that his last game he came in relief too (still 89 pitches so not a full on relief appearance).  It makes you wonder what they might be considering in September?

He'll be used if needed as a long man as he won't start especially with Bieber in the mix unless there's an injury. Yesavage coming into the last game in the third inning was by design, get him use to coming in out of the pen and not starting like he's been doing his whole career so far.

Correct, they also need to add him to the 40 before Sept. 1st if they want to use him in the postseason, if he excels in September, it's a big plus. Of course this is if they do go that route, I can't see why not.

After August 15th, he will be able to retain his rookie status and we will still be eligible to get a free pick after next season. I'm not sure if that is a factor.

Doubt he was ever going to get the call before then anyway but it's certainly something they're aware of for these potential late season call ups you would think.

Regarding Trey Yesavage, if he is added to the 40-man prior to September, and called up in August at some point, he is 100% eligible to play in the playoffs, but if he is called up in September, he is still eligible to play in playoffs, but only as an injury replacement? Either way, it starts his service clock, but this far in the season it should be a big deal.

DRS must have loved the splits from Vladdy yesterday. He's up to 4.3 bWAR. Good for 8th among position players in the AL.

Actually I don't even know if DRS takes into account 1B receiving ability. Do any of the defensive metrics consider it?

Not that I am aware of. Tango stopped by one day and mentioned the difference between 1b guys as far as "picking" goes is pretty narrow, the difference from the worst, to the best on a season long scale is worth a few runs at most.

We're seeing the likes of Sandy Alcantara and Spencer Strider struggle to come back from TJS effectively, with poor command. And those are guys whose raw stuff were miles ahead of Manoah's prior to the injury. Definitely going to be a long road to see if Manoah puts himself back into back of the rotation starting depth at least.

The chances of him coming back to the big squad this season is virtually 0. He'll be optioned to AAA when his rehab timer is up certainly.

His mechanics are still way out of whack it seems. I know he was never a command king even when he was getting dominant results, but he could still throw strikes reliably

I worry a bit about this with Bieber. Numbers seem fine so far, but the MLB's a different animal.

True, but at no point has Bieber been walking the planet in his rehab and nearly decapitating batters.

Yeah I remember Robby Ray trying a late season return last year from TJS and he wasn't that effective. Needed the offseason to get right. But then theres guys like Verlander who come back and are better than ever. We will see...

I wonder if Manoah's pitch count got elevated by lots of foul balls?  He had that issue after his near Cy season where he would get to two strikes early but then the lack of a true putaway pitch would run up the count until he was tired and a mistake was made.

I kinda wish they had Springer DHing today and playing the OF tomorrow to get him back a day sooner.

It's possible there wasn't time for this as Buffalo played an early day game today.

You are right... I thought they were playing a 6:30 game.

Finally.

As John Havok pointed out yesterday, I believe that he returned to Toronto to resolve a dispute between the Blue Jay's doctors and MLB's doctors as to whether or not he was ready to return. The third party obviously agreed with the Blue Jays.

Huge risk reward, no doubt.

Yes, I mention that in the post Big John.
