What say you guys on a trade for Tatis Jr? Evidently, noted baseball genius, Harold Reynolds thinks the Pads should trade him to save some money. I can't see it. But if we can't pull in Alonso or Bregman, and they would be willing to trade him, would you do it? What would you be willing to give up?

That would be a lot, not sure if Toronto can pull that off.

Idk...

14 year contract

No trade clause

Jays don't likely have the high end prospects they'd want

Can't see it happening

I mean honestly this would be as good of a time to make a play for him as any. The Padres ownership family is fighting each other for possession following the owner's death, they're crying poor in in the midst of it and probably struggling from the mega contracts they handed out a few offseasons ago. Tatis lost some goodwill with the fanbase from his suspension, he's expensive and locked down forever, and he's not exactly signed on a bargain contract although he'll be worth it. You could get it done with one of Tiedemann/Orelvis or some smaller combo and convince them that the price savings are enough.

The biggest issue would be Tatis waiving the no-trade clause without a guarantee of a Vlad extension. Another interesting play would be Machado for next to nothing, move them Bassitt or something back and try to chip down on the overall contract terms by sending them back one of our better prospects. Yeah the thought of Machado in a Jays uniform is pretty yucky, but if we're flexing our wallet that's the kind of target you might consider making a big push for. On the other hand Machado might be the face of the franchise at the moment, a likely Hall of Famer who is surely wearing a Padres hat to the Hall if he sticks around for only a few more years.

The two weeks prior to ST are easily the worst two weeks of the offseason.

Hurry up and wait

What do most posters on here prefer: Baseball America or Baseball Prospectus?

Sounds like somebody is researching for the LOD draft

Haha I don't have any high picks this year 😅

Between the lack of impact talent available in the FA market aside from a bad-contract-waiting-to-happen in Bregman, and the fact that the Jays do have a little bit of MiLB depth that they can move from (Buffalo infielders), this is probably the best way to go. I can't imagine it will be Luis Robert unless the team is willing to gut the top end of their already mid farm system, but I'm sure there are options out there where it wouldn't take much and the player coming back has some upside/impact potential.

Yeah a trade does make more sense it seems. The team right now looks like an 83-85 win team so trading for some impact can push it more in the 85-88 range. While the lineup as improved it really could use another bat. You could make the case there is really only 3 guys you can comfortably depend on being above average hitters (Vladdy, Bo and Santander).

Backup C I feel isn't talked about enough either and really could be an upgrade there. Kirk isn't the most durable guy and if he misses time the lineup gets really ugly with Varsho, Clement, Gimenez, Heineman 6-9.

Bold Prediction Time

The Jays aren't adding Bregman and won't add anyone else of significance this offseason.  They will start out slow offensively (as most teams do at the start of the year, when it's still cold) and Jays fans will brag about how they told everyone the Jays needed 2 big bat and Atkins failed.  We'll tread water before ultimately falling out of contention by late June (which was probably a long shot anyway) and then we'll start the fire sale.  Bo will be gone, Gausman, Varsho, Bassitt, Max, maybe Kirk - all gone.

Atkins fired at the end of the year.  Shapiro probably leaves for greener pastures.

The only thing I'm unsure about is whether they extend Vlad or not.  We'll find out soon enough I guess.

Perhaps that's not even a bold take.  I think the likelihood of this happening is pretty high.

If there's any silver lining - you could say the same thing about Detroit and KC last year (they both really only had 2 above average hitters) and they both made the playoffs.

They also play in the Central. AL east you could make the case every team is an above .500 team not like there is the White Sox to beat up on.

Get to it Ross, get this team 1 more big bat!

We could definitely use a big bat that’s more reliable. But given the guys we’ve got it needs to be a pretty big addition otherwise I might not bother.

Wagner’s projections are nuts and he hits left handed which is what we need. He can DH and Taters can play LF. It’s going to be hard to find someone that fits in better than that even if you’d like more power than what Wagner provides.

I suppose you could look at 3B but with Clement there it’s kind of the same situation.

Even LF has some decent internal options.

i might add a Kimbrel or Chafin or something and call it good until the deadline.

Good. Signing Bregman longterm would be gross.

Hard to think of trade targets though, other than Luis Robert. You can peruse the depth charts of would-be sellers and all you really see are bums like Ryan McMahon and Ke'Bryan Hayes or contracts you don't want like Bryan Reynolds, Arenado, and uhhh Ke'Bryan Hayes and Ryan McMahon as well.

The A's will suck and have a handful of 3 WAR bats but no reason to sell any of them.
The Angels are going for it lol so Taylor Ward is probably a deadline target. Likewise, doubt the Cardinals sell guys like Nootbaar yet.

Is there a salary dump trade like the Gimenez one available with another contender? Or a challenge trade of depth bats? Would you roll the dice on Rhys Hoskins and his 1 WAR projection ($17M AAV) if the Brewers ate half of the contract?

Looks like the assignment will be to get in the playoff hunt with the current group. There will be more options at the deadline, maybe. The Cards and Angels and other teams might be decided sellers then.

Despite all of the changes the 2025 season still largely rests on Vlad + wishcasting for bounce backs from multiple former stars.
