Ohtani Thread - Special Sheriff's Edition (Update: confirmed going to the Dodgers)

I've considered buying one of these from time to time, but I'm not convinced I eat enough types of food that would directly benefit from this method of cooking. Aside from the obvious pizza, what else do you like to cook on cast iron? I'd guess that grilled cheese sandwiches and steaks would be appropriate for a cast iron pan, but what else is it good for?

How do you find the maintenance/upkeep requirements for keeping it in tip top shape?

You can have mine if you want it. I was kind of sick of non-stick pans and I'd heard all these great things about cast iron pans (no chemical coatings, better flavor, etc. I watched videos on people cooking steaks in them and they looked amazing. I thought I'd look like a f***ing BOSS with one, so I bought it. What I failed to realize is that my wife does most of the cooking and she had ZERO interest in learning how to use it, how to clean it, how to store it, etc. I gave it a half assed effort, but didn't realize how f***ing heavy they are and how vitally important it is to make sure they are 100% dry before you store them. I also didn't find the taste of my food to be noticeably better anyway. Mine is now all rusted out and a POS. It's so disappointing that I can't be a cast iron pan snob like I'd hoped to.

Instead, I've done a bit more research on non-stick pans (and that technology continues to improve) and trained my wife better. It works for us.

tldr - I'm too busy and don't give a f*** enough to look after a cast iron pan and I didn't think the difference in taste wasn't worth prioritizing that time.

I do most of my stovetop cooking with a nice set of stainless steel pans. I bought this well over 10 years ago and they still look great, so it appears as thought my set will basically last a lifetime. I had a similar frustration with my wife when trying to teach her to simply heat the cookware before adding oil but that seems to be tricky for her to remember.

I have cast iron grids on my barbecue and those things are a bit of a nightmare to keep clean given that they are constantly stored outdoors.

Not long ago I went down a rabbit hole with regards to processed foods in north America. It facilitated my move out of the city to an 8 acre hobby farm on the outskirts (I wasnt willing to give up on the amenities of city life) There are days I regret researching all this stuff, because you're right, ignorance is bliss. But seeing a hot dog under a microscope loaded with tiny bits of plastic because feed for pork allows a certain percentage of plastic in it, I'm glad I've awoken.

This is awesome. Good for you

My belief level that the Jays can actually land Ohtani just skyrocketed.

IB is legit.

Ya la about to get Soto, Ohtani spurns Jays…

Just watch if Atkins and Co. are left with holding their cocks in their hand 🙄.

Nothing worse to see then Atkins and Shapiro panic shopping on left overs looking like the laughing stock by the rest of the GM’s for not pulling trigger on Doto from the beginning.

Just watch!!!

tons we tried out best, no you did not cause as we all f***ing know if you don’t offer 25% more in U.S. dollars to any free agent they don’t come to Canada idiots!!! Not about competitive bid. Gillick knew this in 92-93 when Jays had the highest payroll.

Not getting Ohtani isn't a failure. They are taking a shot, which is better than the bulk of MLB teams. We're in the conversation so let's see what transpires before we get the pitchforks out in front of Blue Jays Way.

How do you clean the damn thing? Can't find any good sources on how to do so.

If it's seasoned properly it should clean easily with hot water and a brush or rag.

Don't use soap, the soap will be slightly absorbed by the porous pan and then you might taste soap in your food.

If it needs a good scrubbing because something crusty got cooked onto it just use coarse salt and rub it around in the pan. Any cooked on grit should scrape right off and then re-season it with oil again.

Imagine our piece of s*** stadium being the thing that tips the scales lol

Did Verducci actually speak to Ohtani and confirm that the RC "reminds him so much of...."

I doubt that immensely.

So it basically is going to feel/look a little bit dirty? And that's fine? I do zero cooking in my house but I do take care of the dishes so you are talking to an idiot when it comes to this stuff.

I choose to believe it. If it was something pro-Dodger then I would question it.

Most cast iron is cheap just buy one. You can easily GENTLY scrub with chainmail if things get stuck (every few uses I find). Easy to keep it clean and coated by burning off bits (put it at med-high til it just starts to smoke) and just keep it oiled (any type of oil really works fine) - brush it with a bit and leave stove on 5 for a couple mins and you'll see it cling.

Someone mentioned the oven too, can do that, but its not necessary. Just regularly clean it with water and oil it

Warm water to rinse first and dry. Then get a paper towel dipped with some olive oil to wipe it. Can also pour some olive oil in the skillet and heat it again for a bit.

Never use soap or dish detergent for it.

Don't want you guys to start blowing your load already. However, was just watching MLB live...

Remember that pie chart the other day that had LAD 30%. Toronto 30%.

Latest chart that MLB displayed has Jays at 60%, LAD 30%.

Japanese ballplayers do like playing in domes. There are a few outdoor ballparks like where the Hanshin Tigers and Hiroshima Carp play and I'm sure a bit more, but yeah the Ham Fighters played in a dome in Sapporo.

I know weather was brought up before. Sapporo is situated in Hokkaido which is the northern province in Japan and they have longer winters than some places in mainland Japan. Pretty much similar to here in Canada.

Not a single MLB reporter knows anything about Ohtani or what he wants/likes. It's all guessing for engagement, follows, and likes. It's best to just wait for Jeff Passan's "BREAKING" post and ignore all the other stuff.

All the Japanese fields look dark and dreary, like 80s style. Like sky dome in the 90s. Or the trop

Retractable domes are clearly the way to go

Avoids rainouts in April, gives you a proper summer outdoor baseball experience in July and August and gives you flexibility in the playoffs

LMAO can you imagine

Have they even spent 600M total on all players since their inception?
