Ohtani Thread - Special Sheriff's Edition (Update: confirmed going to the Dodgers)

Haven't really seen or heard it anywhere but given Ohtani isn't going to pitch at all this year any chance he would play 1st base? The guy is a freak athlete and pretty tall so you think he would be a pretty decent defender there.

 

I know Vladdy plays first as well but he was god awful defensively last year and a good defense there would be an upgrade.

Atkins has handled this perfectly.

 

His ability to speak without saying anything of significance has been great. He's been able to praise Ohtani while at the same time respecting his wishes to keep everything private. His lapdog manager has received the marching orders and is doing the same. It's been a masterclass in how to court a superstar who has major privacy concerns.

For that reason, I suggested Ohtani plays 1B and Vladdy tries 3B for 1 season with him getting in shape AGAIN.

 

If Vladdy sucks then back to 1B with Ohtani being a DH since he's gonna go back to pitching anyways. That's one less hole we'll have where we can spend more easily on LF.

I don't think there would be any chance he'd be able to play first base unless he had strict orders to never throw the ball to the other bases. Even then I don't think it would be wise to do anything that would add to his overall workload and potentially compromise his ability to recuperate from the ligament surgery.

Hopefully all traded in the next couple seasons so we don't have to watch them balloon up in their late 20's and early 30's because they can't control their eating habits and now have fat juicy contracts and financial security locked in.

It appears as though Harper first played first base about 8 months after his surgery. If Ohtani were to come back on a similar timeline it would place his return towards the end of May. It was an internal brace procedure and not full Tommy John surgery, but I don't know how this affects the overall recovery time vs the full procedure.

 

I know for me personally I would choose to be ultra conservative and fully protect my $600 million investment having Ohtani DH only and fully avoid sending Ohtani to the field for the entirety of 2024.

We want Ohtani pitching at a high level in 2025 and beyond if he's a Jay. No need to increase the risk by sticking him in the field, much less 1B when we have a multitude of guys to play that position.

Really curious what would happen if Ohtani signs a deal and then fails the physical or the team sees something in his arm where they don't want to commit the same number. His agency is already so secretive about the elbow injury he had.

You would hope but he had -13 OAA last year alone and eye test he looked awful too. -4 in each of the previous years.

I'd disagree. Ohtani is a Supreme athlete and has the perfect size to learn and play 1B. From my experience, if you can play any position on the field then you can easily play 1B as long as you have the bat to make it worth the hassle. Ohtani is probably gonna end up there once his pitching days are done anyways.

That would be weird for a team to see something in his still healing surgically repaired ligament that would scare them off. If he failed a physical it would be the Carlos Correa situation times infinity though.
