Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Very impressed by Vlad. Cuts his hair and now shaking off the HR jacket and celebration for a solo HR down 10-3. I like what I am seeing lately.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 We need to first get rid of Shapiro, Atkins, Schneider and pitching staff. And then be patient and do what Orioles did, and draft early in the drafts for the next 3 years. We should trade Vlad, Bichette and pitchers for the best prospects clubs have. Can't do what the Orioles did. New rules don't allow a team to draft Top 10 two years in a row.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Can't do what the Orioles did. New rules don't allow a team to draft Top 10 two years in a row. Not quite that severe. Teams that receive revenue-sharing payouts can't receive a lottery pick for more than two years in a row and those that don't can't get a top-six choice in consecutive Drafts. Furthermore, a club that's ineligible for the lottery can't select higher than 10th overall.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 He was also a better defender and base runner in 2021. He’s f***ing garbage at both today. If the ball isn’t within 3’ of him he is quite literally the worst defender at 1B in baseball. I don’t think he ever gets near 6 wins again unless he somehow becomes an average defender or ends up at 3B and is somehow not the worst at that. Post the stats
Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 If we're relying on Pop, Little, Burr, Cabrera, etc. to play key roles in our pen next year, we aren't competing. Personally, I don't think competing in 2025 is going to be feasible either way. Fully agree. Theres no real path for this team to be a competitor next year, IMO. We are going to need a full BP, A power hitting corner OF, a third baseman, a catcher and at least one SP. Thats a tall task when your top spec is out with TJ surgery and the second best is a PED user. I really can't see it.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Love seeing it. Vlad now has a .900 OPS. He's literally galloping up the leaderboard. His wRC+ is now 154 tied for 12th in the league with Alvarez. Pay that man his money.

Passed Kwan now tied for 10th in the league with a 155 wRC+ Vlad is back to being a top 10 hitter in the league. I wouldn't be betting against Vlad finishing top 5 in the league in wRC+ this year. He's on fire.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Didn't think Vlad was going to be able to rake like this again. Hopefully he keeps it going. Either really high trade value or an actual core piece to build around.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 perfect time to trade vlad. Ross would have a bigger target on his head than trump but he might have already did.

Either really high trade value or an actual core piece to build around. I struggle to think about how any variation of a Jays team is better off without Vlad on it. It’s incredibly hard to come out ahead of trading away a mid 20’s elite talent. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just really unlikely. The Jays have been spending like a big market team in recent years, and we have a lot of money coming off the books next year. Vlad has indicated openly that he wants to stay. It would be a massive fumble on the part of the front office/ownership if they can’t come to a deal. Particularly now since he’s proving that his 2021 wasn’t a fluke.

They won't do it. They should but they won't. They will either trade him next year with far less trade value, or sign him to a contract that will vastly overpay him because why else would he sign in a year he's about to become a free agent? Unless he gets obscene money from us of course. We can probably get a f***ing haul for him right now

They didn't get better years down the road by trading Betts. They should have extended him.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 No offense man, but this is a stretch. Soto's traditional stats are WAY ahead of Vlad - so are his advanced stats. They aren't in the same area code this year, which is reflective in their wRC+, WAR, etc. Juan Soto .310 27 77 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. .311 21 69 It depends what you think 'in the same ballpark' means, but they are getting pretty close in the triple crown stats... For Arb purposes you need to compare Vlad 21-24 with Soto 20-23. Soto got 31 coming off of a .270 35 100 season, with good on base, and a very good history, and Vlad could very well "look" better to an arbitrator by the end of this year. I don't know that for a fact but just watching the arb process it seems that advanced stats aren't as important.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Solid 84 win team More like extend Vlad Sign Soto Sign Burnes Sign capable backup catcher. Figure out spots 3-8 in the pen Get at least 1 thumper off the bench that's not totally useless in the field. Rest of the bench is fine with what they have. Clement, Schneider, pick a backup CF from all the guys theyve just acquired, and the backup catcher they sign. Bench done. Decent amount of depth at AAA from the trade targets to fill in for Bo's year long calf injuries. Probably need another SP though. As far as the pen....Romano and Green (assuming no trade of the latter) are really the only guys I'd have any real faith in out of the gate. Swanson might pitch himself back into the circle of trust ...remains to be seen. Little I think is a capable arm, might surprise and be more than just a 2nd lefty, but not quite there yet. Cabrera is nasty and inconsistent. They've got a lot of "bottom 3" delivers, they definitely need a high leverage addition and at last 1 or 2 more mid-to high to shake out from the system or other pickups But mostly they need Bo and Vlad to be great all season long

Elite talents such as his don't grow on trees and he's arguably the most talented hitter the organization has ever produced.

Vlad has little D value playing 1B. We are looking at his most sustained offensive push since '21 but its still been only a couple months ish. Kind like Bo's heater in the end of '22 that saved that season, and look where we are with Bo in '24. I'd love to have Vlad extended but he wants to be paid in the Top 3 in baseball over a decade. No way he over performs that kind of deal. The best value we will get for Vlad, when we look back in 2025, will have been today. But I don't expect it to happen for other broader reasons ownership has.

Yes - my comments look worse after Vlad goes 8 for 15 with 3 Hrs, 5 runs and 7 RBIs in the past 3 games.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I haven't seen any numbers posted anywhere for Vlad's contract asks, have you heard something concrete? I have heard multiple industry sources say, and it tracks in my opinion, that if Vlad sustains the current numbers, you will need a just under $400 m contract. Probably something like $390 for 13 yrs.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I haven't seen any numbers posted anywhere for Vlad's contract asks, have you heard something concrete? Yes, and it matched what David Samson was saying. He knows Vlad and his Dad well. Vlad seeking 10 years and Top 3 AAVs. If we don't give that he goes to market. The end. Its important to keep in mind that as hot as he is right now, he will probably finish the year around 3 WAR, not 6. Again, he ain't a Betts.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 It is going to be fascinating to see if this is the real Vlad and he's going to be Miggy for the next 6-7 years. Is this sustainable? Who knows. I think there's a very real possibility this is mirage and we should cash in now, but I also think there's a real possibility he's finally matured and is going to be a beast moving forward. I lean towards locking him up now, but I'm still scarred by how s***** he was in 2022 and 2023 when we really needed him to be a star player. 2022 and 2023 likely finish differently if we have this version of Vlad on them.
