Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 I'm not even mad they are 4-6. Kind of impressed actually. The luck will eventually run out and actual competence will be required.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 I'm not even mad they are 4-6. Kind of impressed actually. I'm not upset with the record either. It's more about how the team looks. What I'm upset about is the ongoing offensive struggles of Vladdy, Varsho and Kirk (which have spilled over from last year), along with the light bats that KK and IKF carry and the decision to sign them as "nearly every day" players. All together it makes the offense worrisomely underwhelming.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 The luck will eventually run out and actual competence will be required. Or more likely, both the offense and pitching regress to the mean and the team starts playing a lot better. Home games and weaker opponents play a factor into a much "improved" looking team. Narratives run abound that Don Mattingly started becoming a more powerful voice to the hitters with the pitching staff really "coming together" and "bringing each other up" to explain a strong finish to April/start to May.

Who would rather have as a voice in the hitters heads Don Mattingly or prime Cito Gaston? Cito hitting advice - pull dat ball Mattingly hitting advice - Use your 99.999th percentile hand eye coordination to strike out 25 times in 600 at bats

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 The low strikeout philosophy has been irrelevant in baseball for a while now. I disagree. As recently as 2017-2019, there was a huge narrative about how the teams with higher contact rates and lower K%'s have more success in the playoffs. I think that developed from those f***ing Royal teams, but the Astros (and Dodgers?) had a ton of playoff success with rosters that didn't strikeout as much.

Cause the type of baseball that we've seen for the most part seems to be, go for the homerun, don't worry about the strikeout. Strikeout numbers for hitters have been outrageous.

Some of that is hitter approaches changing but I think most of it is just pitchers having nastier stuff. If you want to make a ton of contact in MLB, you either need generational talent or you need to sacrifice virtually all power. The whole hitter launch angle revolution is sort of a response to pitchers being tougher to hit, you know. Kind of like saying "well if I can't shoot the gaps and hit .280 with 15 homers anymore, I might as well become a .240 hitter with 20+ homers"
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 I heard on the radio this morning that they wanted to install traditional foul pole at the RC, but T.Swift nixed it as they need it to be portable so trucks and such can be brought in for concerts. Initial reports of the new lower level seem positive though. I really hate the advertising ******** they show on TV though.

They are correct that the "art of pitching" has declined, but that's not because pitchers got worse - that's happened because you get better results throwing 95+ with a dirty slider.....whether you can paint a corner or not. Velocity seems to be the one weapon that hitters haven't solved yet - and "cutting down your swing to make contact" simply isn't the answer, unless you've got elite bat to ball skills.

So here is one thing to watch for I have heard people say that "trunk rotation speed" for hitters is a rough equivalent for pitcher velocity. It's the core thing that dictates swing speed, reaction time, adjustment time in the swing. Hitters need to be able to rotate and adjust powerfully and quickly. I bet we see hitters train for high performance "trunk rotation" more and more aggressively over time. And I bet we see more and more oblique injuries and rotation injuries as a result.

Kind of like saying "well if I can't shoot the gaps and hit .280 with 15 homers anymore, I might as well become a .240 hitter with 20+ homers" It's also just like the NBA shot selection. Evolution. I repeat this all the time, but 1985 cardinals, 1988 red sox, even1993 Blue Jays all amazing contact and batting average teams But your random 220 homer team of sub-par mediocres can keep pace with them now (like 2023 cubs or something). And your good team knocking 250 homers, but not historical keeps pace with the 1993 Jays. So let's say they all decided to hit Don Mattingly style, and since they have lesser talent they are .280 with 13 homers (old Mattingly like). And the team hit's .280 with 120 homers... it gets you no where. So is it that they can't do it? Or the math doesn't make sense to do it.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 Using the Copilot AI in Windows, I asked how many games would the jays win this season. You How many wins will the Blue Jays have this season? Copilot The Toronto Blue Jays had a record of 89-73 in the 2023 season, finishing third in the AL East and securing a wild-card spot. Atkins didn't do one thing to improve the offense we had last year and it wasn't good enough last year therefore, there's no chance it could be better this year.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 Atkins all offseason. Probably knew Ernie and Davis were studs but didn't want to outright say "we have some total studs we don't want to block" because it would be overconfident or put too much pressure on the boys.
