Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I'm just trying to figure out his role. Surely he is not a bench guy for $10M. If he's the primary DH that cuts into Kirk's playing time. It's a head scratcher, unless there is a trade in the works, like Kirk to Miami for pitching. Strange move, no doubt.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Tabler the bases loaded pinch hitting extraordinaire Yes, I think he hit over .400 career with bases loaded.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Strange move, no doubt. I mentioned Belt over a month ago on Twitter. I'll admit it isn't the most natural fit, but I like the bat. I'm surprised he got as much money as he did. It's not my money so I don't care. We're going to have injuries. People worry about the outfield suffering injuries and for good reason with Springer and Kiermaier, but Danny missed a good chunk last year and Kirk missed a big chunk the year before. The idea that our catcher was going to be our primary DH seemed a bit of a stretch. It will still happen at times. Our bench looks so much better than it did last year. Mind you we are spending over the luxury tax this year!
MON4NHLTOR4MLB Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Agree, if you’re going to spend, keep spending up to the first tax
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I guess the "oh wait they have more money?" wish list would be Mancini or Profar Danny Duffy or Wacha (puke) Chafin
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Wow bro that's a bit aggressive. Did you have money on TCU tonight or something? As little respect as I have for him as both a person and a player That's just stupid, Term.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Aren’t the Jays already at 40 on the roster? Who gets the DFA to make room?
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Aren’t the Jays already at 40 on the roster? Who gets the DFA to make room? Biggio is getting traded to the As in the Laureano package duh
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Classic situation of a guy being a jack of no trades in the field Yup. Jack of all master of none
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I guess the "oh wait they have more money?" wish list would be Mancini or Profar Danny Duffy or Wacha (puke) Chafin They've shown prior interest in Cueto, with them going over the CBT they'll make more moves I expect.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 Yup. Jack of all master of none Yeah he's a UT player like any 2B would be if you played them at 3B or in the OF.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I like this move because it shows they’re being aggressive and the tax isn’t going to slow them down. Playing with the big boys now. I remember thinking a few years ago Belt would be a stud if he played anywhere but SF. DH against righties and a great PH option to have off the bench when he’s not in the lineup. The amount of versatility the Jays have on their roster allows them to make this kind of move. Hopefully there’s more to come.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 Biggio is getting traded to the As in the Laureano package duh It's a perfect fit. Biggio is the low ceiling high floor player that the A's crave.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Yeah he's a UT player like any 2B would be if you played them at 3B or in the OF. Strange player honestly.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Great move, we needed another lefty hopefully 2021 version Don't they just move Ryu to the 60 day IL? There is plenty to cut on the 40 man though like Thorton, Lukes or Hatch if they are not making a trade.
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Vladdy getting traded to Miami?
mellowgold Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 So vs RHP Jansen/Kirk Vlad Biggio/Merrifield Chapman Bo Varsho KK Springer Belt Vs LHP Jansen Vlad Espinal Chapman Bo Merrifield Varsho Springer Kirk Loaded with options and versatility. So unlike any Jays team of recent memory. I'm loving Atkins' off-season so far.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Outs above average likes Biggio at 2B and in the OF. I don’t think there’s a need to move Biggio and you can still bring in a 4th OF unless moving Biggio improves the team.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 Craig Biggio's son, the 3rd string second baseman, 5th outfielder and 3rd string first baseman. What a legend.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Is Brandon Belt better than Greg Bird though? Could’ve had him for cheep cheep
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Would like it a lot more if it was for 5Million but still really like the player. So much depth everywhere now with guys able to play multiple positions that a few IL stints won't hurt the team as much. Lets Vladdy get some rest at DH against RHP too which I think will help. Much more balanced lineup now too with 4 LHH against RHP. Also doesn't hurt he's won a couple world series and is a solid veteren.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Interestingly enough Biggio has basically even splits for his career vs RHP/LHP. He's produced a 101 WRC+ vs LHP and a 106 WRC+ vs RHP. Recent seasons look pretty bad vs LHP though. Neither Merrifield nor Biggio have enough outfield innings at this point to determine who is a better outfield defender at this point. Biggio has looked pretty good at first base in the limited time I've seen him play there, however Belt is far more experienced and almost certainly adds a lot more with the bat if he bounces back sufficiently. Merrifield has like double the amount of innings in CF than Biggio has TOTAL in the OF lol. Merrifield is legitimately an outfielder who can back up at CF and not do so horribly, we don’t even know if Biggio can hang in the outfield for long stretches without embarrassing himself (he’d probably be fine in a corner so exaggerating a bit).
MON4NHLTOR4MLB Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Vladdy getting traded would be laughable. They think the Teo and Moreno deals backlash were bad just wait haha
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I legit can't believe the Jays have spent this much. This is truly a make or break year for Shatkins. I'm pumped for opening day!!
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 So vs RHP Jansen/Kirk Vlad Biggio/Merrifield Chapman Bo Varsho KK Springer Belt Vs LHP Jansen Vlad Espinal Chapman Bo Merrifield Varsho Springer Kirk Loaded with options and versatility. Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 (edited) Vladdy getting traded would be laughable. They think the Teo and Moreno deals backlash were bad just wait haha Vladdys not getting traded because we signed a 34 year old to a 1 year contract loll. Now whether we trade him in the future because we don't want to pay him 400M is another question. As long as they structure his extension like Zion's contract in the NBA where they put in a fat clause im good with it. Otherwise, i dont trust fatties when they dont have incentives to stay in shape lol. Edited January 10, 2023 by Jays24

It’s a one year commitment and they are clearly going over the luxury tax. Not your $. They are finally spending some serious cash and I’m thrilled. Keep spending
