Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I legit can't believe the Jays have spent this much. This is truly a make or break year for Shatkins. I'm pumped for opening day!! Not make or break, but they said they would spend when the time is right and they have stuck by that. The team isn’t on some 2-3 year bubble or it will burst scenario like so many want us to believe. We have other assets and management that want some sort of sustainable winning and hopefully a championship sooner than later.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 I don’t understand why you care how much he cost. It’s a one year commitment and they are clearly going over the luxury tax. Not your $. They are finally spending some serious cash and I’m thrilled. Keep spending Welcome to the board!

Keep spending Oh I don't care personally, just thought he would be cheaper. Prolly had to pay more since he's a West Coast guy and if thats what it takes I'm fine with it. If he's healthy hes a great bat.

Ray Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Is Brandon Belt better than Greg Bird though? Could’ve had him for cheep cheep Brandon Belt has put up 5.5 WAR and a 122 OPS+ in the same span in which Greg Bird has yet to play a major league game. I think it’s fairly obvious he’s better.
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Vladdys not getting traded because we signed a 34 year old to a 1 year contract loll. Now whether we trade him in the future because we don't want to pay him 400M is another question. As long as they structure his extension like Zion's contract in the NBA where they put in a fat clause im good with it lol. Otherwise, i dont trust fatties when they dont have incentives to stay in shape lol. Here is what is happening. Vladdy will be traded to Miami for Luzardo or Cabrera + one of their top prospects. The Jays will then sign Danny Jansen to a 5 year contract. Jansen being 6' 2" will start playing 1B in addition to catching.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 He's a talentless Hollywood nepo baby and I've always been right about him. I agree we don’t really need him as this roster is constructed but with the shift gone he might have some solid value again.

He's gone nearly full troll, like 99% worthless garbage troll posts and 1% posts with any substance. This is just part of his shtick. This is right up there with his "Danny Jansen is blind so should be the catcher traded" routine.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 $9.3 is a lot for Belt. He likely has to be playing everyday or on the strong side of a platoon at DH. This puts the Jays over the luxury tax, so hope they add more via free agency if they could like another pen arm or No. 5 starter. I think that's what they'll do. Belt at DH vs RHP and Kirk/Jansen at DH vs LHP with the other at C.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I think that's what they'll do. Belt at DH vs RHP and Kirk/Jansen at DH vs LHP with the other at C. Yup. It’s insurance incase of injuries and we are maintaining a well balanced lineup on a day to day basis even after losing Teo. The offense is structured well and we’re just a 5th SP and another pen arm away from being set for opening day imo.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I'd still like to see a lefty masher added for the outfield as well. We do need a true backup OF and I’m hoping it’s Mccutchen. He would see plenty of playing time and we might have the best bench in baseball.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 Ok smart guys. How is it trolling when I get almost everything right? I nailed KK over Bellinger as well as the Jays trading Moreno and keeping Kirk. I've also been telling you all Craig Biggio's son sucks and I was right about that too. The dude is now 4th on the depth chart for 2B (Barger is better than him too). I think the only thing I've gotten wrong was my pro-Tilapia posts but those I will admit were trolling. Everything else was 100% the real deal.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Unspoken aspect of this signing is that we are one step closer to becoming the White Jays. Obviously I don't believe Shatkins are racist but this offseason is a hilarious coincidence loll.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Biggio is our best option at 2B. I think you use Merrifield in a platoon with Kiermaier and use Espinal at 2B against LHP and to spell Bo and Chapman, at least to start the season. Belt's real competition is Kirk and Jansen, less so the infielders.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Wait your cheering for the Jays to become whiter? Obviously not man... probably used the wrong word so I edited my post. I hated the Teo trade and think we gave up too much to get Varsho for the record lol.

I don't think this is by design and is more of a coincidence than anything.

I think if we wanted an actual OF at this point it would probably be someone like Profar but he won’t come that cheap and could get a starting deal somewhere.

He would see plenty of playing time and we might have the best bench in baseball. We have 3 CFs starting so Biggio/Merrifield are our 4th/5th OFers who will only need to play the corners. I don't see a 4th OFer as a major need anymore. If a major injury happens then I think we'll make a trade but for now, we have the right type of depth at all offensive positions imo. We need a 5th starter and/or one shut down bullpen arm.

Profar doesn’t have that bargaining power on a true contender though. He can start on a non contender but no real contender will just give him the role to run with.

McCutchen grades out fine defensively as a corner outfielder. His sprint speed was still 90th percentile last year. His arm is crappy. He may not be a CF anymore but he'd look fine in left field. I probably would have rather have had McCutchen to Belt, but I'm happy to have McCutchen. Trade Biggio and sign McCutchen and we'd really be cooking..lol

We have a spot on the bench that can be utilized and in a year the team probably wants to make a statement it’s not the worst idea to build enough depth on the field that we can withstand 2-3 injuries and still have an above average offense.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Nice work by management to add left handedness to the lineup. With the changes to the shift rule and the teams previous make-up it was essential to add LHH. Belt seems like an overpay but who cares on a 1 year deal. We need one more piece for the BP to hopefully bump Mayza from any late inning duty and I would be happy.
