Ray Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Rays or Pirates will get him. A’s or Nats are my bet.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 And he'll be healthy pitching over 60 innings. 60 innings, 85 K's, 28 BB, 3.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 1.1 WAR, 8 HLDS.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 We traded a MVP for that guy. One of the worst trades in the Shatkins era. With that said, I would have preferred to get rid of Thorton over Merryweather. He might always be a "what if" guy but we know Thorton is a "will never be" guy lol.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 They cut Merryweather? This will be my last post. I will no longer be a fan. Goodbye forever.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 Hoping Merryweather flops wherever he ends up. Never liked that guy.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 The only way this makes sense is if the Jays know something bad medical wise. Thornton is of less value and has a greater chance of clearing waivers, all things being equal.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Rays or Pirates will get him. The Jays do have time to trade him. I think they will find someone willing to give up a lottery ticket

What on earth did you think the FO was going to get for him? You can argue they ought to have traded him before that season started - but once he got hurt, they were f***ed.

Shatkins let a valuable asset like Donaldon get into his walk year when they had 0 interest in building a world series winner at that time (rightfully so because they were all aging). At that point, you'd think trading your best asset who also plays the same position as your best prospect at the time (Vladdy) would be the smart and logical move. Ah well... not point going into depth on this. We're well past that time now (thankfully so).

YES, I thought they should have gotten much more than what they received.

It didn't work out for them in the playoffs, but teams always pay up for that chance.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 https://blogs.fangraphs.com/brandon-belt-has-one-job-for-the-blue-jays/ Brandon Belt crushes breaking balls. I read Chris Black's thread on him, and he pointed out that the platoon may not be a strict LHP vs RHP between Belt and the Catchers at DH. It could be based on pitch mix of the SP. Belt is fine against LHP and he's great at low pitches (sinkerballers, curve/slider guys) and his weakness his high FB, which is Jansen's strength.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 LOL the Bellinger Fanboys could at least dish it back but you Biggio fanboys clearly have your panties in a bunch over all this. Please get your T-levels checked but in the meantime I'll try and be as nice as I can here. You idiots have all been on Craig Biggio's sons nuts for years and I've been telling you guys he sucks for just as long. I don't know if you guys are colorblind or what but if you look at his statcast page you'll see a lot of blue. That's bad in case you didn't know. I don't think I have ever mentioned Biggio before...lol. Let it go man.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Sorry if I missed it, but has anyone mentioned how the shift rules might affect Belt next year?

You can argue they ought to have traded him before that season started - but once he got hurt, they were f***ed. Only alternative was to keep him and give him the QO. Either he stays for another year (and the Jays would have gotten bounce back JD from 2019) or he leaves and the Jays get a pick. That was the avenue to go to, but obviously the front office wanted to clear money and tank, so it was never a real possibility.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I had no idea Toronto has good chicken tenders. Give the man a years supply a la free soda in the machine in Oakland.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Sorry if I missed it, but has anyone mentioned how the shift rules might affect Belt next year? pretty sure he was shifted against every AB. He also was 9 for 13 on bunting against the shift. So you'd have to take that into account too. Overall it's probably more about his health
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 I had no idea Toronto has good chicken tenders. Give the man a years supply a la free soda in the machine in Oakland. You can give him the shittiest tenders anyway...it won't matter once he puts ketchup on them. Makes you wonder how many other terrible life choices he makes
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 These dimensions aren’t even right anymore lol. But yeah he should obv hit more homers vs SF and that high deep RF wall
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Looks like he could hit up to 40 HR, with health and regular playing time Not to reopen the whole debate, but Belt hitting behind Vladdy will force the RHP to challenge Vlad..... let's hope he doesn't chase as much

He hasn’t got there yet.

How about we give him healthy food while we expect him to perform at a high level for us instead... wouldn't want Vladdy getting any ideas himself lol. And yes, I'm really fun at parties lol.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 That’s just it, Vlad needs to get that it doesn’t need to be him doing everything. He hasn’t got there yet. Chris Black had an interesting twitter thread about how the key to Vlad unlocking his full potential largely hinges on laying off of low pitches. That will enable the launch angle issues/ground ball problems to be largely mitigated as he has difficulty in elevating those pitches.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Seems weird… either one of Kirk/Jansen has an undisclosed injury or there’s a trade in the works. Or they’re somehow going to shuffle the DH between Kirk, Jansen, Springer and Belt. Which doesn’t leave Belt with much playtime
