Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Incredible to me. Seems like a lock for 1st ballot HOF yet his career fWAR(not the be all end all at C) is 55 - the same as Russel Martin, who rarely if ever, gets a HOF mention. Kind of sums it up. Some players for whatever reason (playoff performance - gold gloves etc etc) just seem to get elevated in status. Some get the opposite. Big Papi was in the same class as Yadi, getting into HOF even though tied credibly to PEDs at one point. That's messed up he did that, but they let him do as he wishes... both those guys should be in the hall.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Pujols won player of the week.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Yadi and Martin, lol. Was just thinking aloud. Agree. I'm ok with Papi too but it should open doors to others with PED issues. Posey will go in. He deserves it. There is a lot of talk Sal Perez should go in. Martin should be a lock before Sal. Martin's career at C was remarkably productive and consistent.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 (edited) Yadi and Martin, lol. Was just thinking aloud. Hey, if Harold Baines is in the Hall all bets are off. Open the floodgates, let them all in. Edited August 23, 2022 by Omar

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Arod should be in For sure. Barry Bonds is still the greatest player I've ever seen and that includes the Pirates pre PED years (at least i think they were). Baines is in the HOF with 38 career WAR as Omar points out. How about Roger Clemens? Guy was insane arm. Blyleven and Morris finally made it. Questionably. Jim Rice. Nobody can tell me Bagwell, Pudge or Piazza weren't juiced. Pudge bulked up a ton the last few years. Still an awesome player. There is a good case for Martin and Stieb. Anyway...lots of names should be in that aren't and the inconsistency makes me look lesser on the HOF than I'd like to.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Hey, if Harold Blaine’s is in the Hall all bets are off. Open the floodgates, let them all in. 100%. If he's in so should Dave Parker, Rusty Staub, Luis Gonzalez, Dwight Evans, Torii Hunter.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Eno Sarris @enosarris By Stuff+, Noah Syndergaard has one of the worst four-seam fastballs in the game. So he's cut his usage from 21% with Angels to 7% with Phillies. The changeup is below average, so he's cut that from 23% to 10%. Changing your mix is the easiest way to improve. (Thor with one of the worst 4 seamers in the game. Baseball is a hard game to be good at and even harder to sustain at a high level)

Like a few years ago it was easy to tell a SP hey your sinker blows, throw it less. But most of the pitchers in the league have now been through that filter at least once so those changes are not as easy. Like with someone like Kikuchi, it seems super easy to say throw your cutter less it f***ing blows but there are reasons theoretically that he kind of HAS to throw it even though it blows or else he is even worse. Maybe maybe. So yeah Syndergaard with no CH or 4S does he even miss bats? That means he's like 45% sinkers and then mostly sliders. Bizarre.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Since the trade deadline some of the SP traded in terms of performance: Castillo Montgomery White Syndergaard Montaz Mahle (poor guy)

I agree, its dumb to definitively say “this guy did steroids and this guy didn’t” when probably 90% of the league was juicing. Are we really certain Pujols never juiced? Even in his younger years?? Idk.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Man if you showed this tweet to someone in 2015 they would think the universe is melting or something LOL. Yep. Its so upside down to see what has become of that formerly exploding FB to complement a wipeout slider. I'd seen some Sarris work on his stuff prior to the deadline that looked bizarre to me. And why I wasn't keen to pay much, if anything, for his high wire act at the deadline. Depth...I guess.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 I'm not sure the Phillies really gave up much of anything for him though. Moniak is a replacement level player. Jadiel Sanchez does not seem that interesting. So it was Frasso (good prospect) for White (lots of control, could be good MLB SP or just a swing man) vs maybe something like, I dunno, Otto Lopez and Trent Palmer (just throwing out two random names who another team might want in their org but are much worse than Frasso) for Syndergaard and taking on his remaining 2022 salary.

After his very own Brady Anderson season (and a great 2020 in the shortened season), Perez is right back to being a below average bat, which generally aligns with this career #'s (career 102 wRC+). The guy has 15 career WAR as he finishes up his age 32 season. I'm not even convinced he belongs on the ballot.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Sal Perez won't get in. That would be insane.

WS ring. 1 big HR season. I've listened to writers with a vote talking suggesting he is worth strong consideration brought up in the same sort of convo with guys like Yadi and Posey. More than once. Martin I've literally never heard once being even discussed as a candidate. (I realize "writers with a vote" is part of the problem)

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Sal Perez shouldn't even sniff the HoF but I think he has a small chance due to the hardware he has accumulated, often undeserved. His stats obviously suck but he is a 7x All-Star and has 5 Gold Gloves, 4 Silver Sluggers and a WS MVP. If he keeps playing for another 5 years or so he could also end up with 300+ home runs, landing him somewhere around 5th all time for a C. Seems pretty wild but I think it's possible.

I guess the question is how you choose to look at his accomplishments/stats. If voters look at it as, 'of all the catchers that have ever played, where do his power numbers, All Star appearances, and gold gloves match up?
