Scared money don't make money. He wants to stay in Cleveland because it's all he's ever known in his professional baseball life and it's the safe thing to do. He's scared of change.

There are 0 objective reasons to want to stay there beyond that. It's a garbage city for a young millionaire athlete, their payroll is a joke, the owners are a joke, they are not in a contention window, they've already low-balled him once and had to low-ball him again to retain him, and they regularly trade away their stars.

It's not uncommon for some franchise stars to just dedicate their entire career to the meme of "I played with one team forever" and not have any ambitions beyond that.

It's probably a good thing for the Jays in the long run anyway. He would have been an incredible addition to this team but would anyone be surprised if Biggio, Kirk and Pearson combined for more WAR this season and Martinez had a big year in the minors? Even the packages most fans were okay with giving up (including myself) were still a potential Chris Archer-to-the-Pirates level overpay.

Not everyone wants to live in Los Angeles and not everyone cares how much money they make after a certain point. Maybe he has kids in school in Cleveland and wants them to have a normal life without moving all over the place. Maybe he has a home in a great neighbourhood next to his best friends and his parents. I find it so ridiculous when people trash a city and probably haven't even spent any time there.

Why is it assumed JRam signed the deal because he wants to stay in Cleveland, as opposed to wanting security against e.g., injury?

He's already well into the 8 figures of earnings + contracts, I'd think that would be enough "insurance".

That's an assumption. Fact is, we don't know his motivations. Nor whether he would accept a trade to Toronto in July if the Guardians are bottom dwellers.

Let the rumours continue.

I think people are sleeping a bit on the Guardians. I think he probably perceives them as a team that can win. He became a full-time player in 2016, and he's been to the playoffs 4 times in those 6 years. They're something close to a 0.500 team now, and are going to have Espino, Valera, Rocchio, Arias, Noel, Jones, and Freeman all in AA or above knocking on the door of the majors this year. I think he plays his share of playoff games over the life of his contract.

A lot of the trades Cleveland got criticized for have worked out pretty well:

Clevinger -> Cal Quantrill, Gabriel Arias, Owen Miller

Kluber -> Clase

Bauer -> Franmil Reyes

Lindor + Carrasco -> Amed Rosario, Andres Gimenez, Josh Wolf, Isaiah Greene

Basically all of the guys they were criticized for trading would now be on albatross FA deals if they had opened the purse strings to keep them. I guess you could criticize the lack of impact talent they got in return, but they managed to get productive major leaguers in every case.

Yeah consistent sellers get bad org reps and end up unpopular but the playoff track record and developmental track record in Cleveland says a lot

Not far off the TB model really - with similar success.

Wow, JRam with the rare combination of not being a greedy record contract money chaser and also not giving a s*** about winning either.

I'm just happy that he's no longer on our trading radar. Cost was way to high.

I've been to Cleveland twice to catch the Jays in the 2016 ALCS and in 2018 to catch Game 3 of the Raptors vs. Cavs. Also have Cleveland Browns season tickets haha. Regardless, it's not that bad of a city as you're making it out to be. I thought after travelling to see the Jays in 2016 I would never want to go back, though I did. A lot of great restaurants and bars around the ballpark and arena. East 4th Street is a great area with restaurants, bars and nightlife. The West Side Market area is a cool area as well. A lot of people in Cleveland are friendly and their fans are very welcoming towards visiting fans. You've never even been to the city and yet talking trash about it. Sure it's not a New York or San Francisco or LA (which aren't that great cities as they're made out to be anyways). Overall, Cleveland has cleaned up over the last couple of years. It's not as bad as I was imagining. Would I live there? Not my first choice. Give me Florida over any place up north that has awful weather for 7-8 months of the year haha.

I want to see how CLE does in 2023-beyond with a balanced schedule. The reason they can get marginal returns in trades and still be competitive is largely because they can beat up on the AL Central.

Cleveland is the last team that deserves a discount superstar. Totally shocking that he would take that deal.

Trout and Ohtani for our entire top 30 prospects list. I WILL NOT REST UNTIL THIS HAPPENS AND I WILL TALK ABOUT IT INCESSANTLY!

A lot of the Cleveland disparagement goes back to the 80s and 90s when it was truly a shithole's shithole.

Baltimore laughed at Cleveland back then, it's true.

But yeah, Cleveland has undergone quite the revival lately, whereas Baltimore has continued its downward spiral into virtual hell.

I was thinking he was talking about the geographical Cleveland rather than their record. Maybe not since he liked your post. Anyways, you can’t really tell a lot from what’s around a ballpark. Baltimore is a universally accepted awful city, but the waterfront Ballpark area is beautiful

Joey Votto is hilarious lol

I loved how some people were annoyed by his home run celebrations last year and didn't realize he was doing the Jamie Tartt celebration.

I thought Paddack had 3 years of control, only 2. Still a nice pick up. A lot of upside there. Twins are definitely moving in the right direction.

Rogers is a big pen upgrade I suppose.

But Rooker looks like a part time player.

Paddack does have 3 years of control if you count 2022.

That's a really good deal for the Twins in my opinion.

Usually you come up with some high quality posts but this is just a bad take. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't particularly care for Cleveland. Your assessment while being neither a millionaire athlete nor from there is that it's a garbage city for Ramirez. Well, he clearly thinks otherwise. This post is smeared with "I went out on a date with a hot chick yesterday...oh wait she's not interested in a second date...well, she wasn't that great anyways"

I am happy he signed the deal, given that these trade rumours never went away and I was legit nervous over the cost to get this guy. It's not like Cleveland was looking for low level prospects. Every single one of these players mentioned in a deal were either already on the MLB roster or expected to contribute very soon.
