RobinThicc Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Interesting. Im guessing the Jays liked Gausman more than Ray?
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Wow... anyone surprised we went with Gausman with the contracts being so similar?
mellowgold Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Thought he'd get a little more. Sucks he's leaving but happy he's out of the division, at least.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Interesting. Im guessing the Jays liked Gausman more than Ray? Maybe Or about equal but they felt they had a better chance of signing Gaussman
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Wow... anyone surprised we went with Gausman with the contracts being so similar? Gaussman may have been more interested in signing here
philly30 Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Interesting. Im guessing the Jays liked Gausman more than Ray? Gausman will be better but losing Semien will hurt, I don't see a good enough replacement
Stottlemyres_Bloody_Chin Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 This could be another Edwin/Morales situation. We probably could have had Ray back for 110/5. Cant see him choosing M's over us at similar money. Did we jump the gun on KG? I'd rather have Ray. I worry KG signing could be a disaster
Stottlemyres_Bloody_Chin Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I would love to be wrong on this obvously
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I trust Gausman more than Ray going forward. As good as Ray was, there are two major red flags: he's a two-pitch pitcher, and his command has abandoned him for entire seasons at a time in the past.
Ray Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Gausman + draft pick at $110M > Ray at $115M.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Gaussman may have been more interested in signing here Well... we saved 5 million overall AND got a compensation pick. We don't get that pick if we bring back Ray.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Wow... anyone surprised we went with Gausman with the contracts being so similar? Maybe everyone thought he was gonna wait until after meeting with the Angels? I guess that never happened lol
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Opt out after 3 years, first 2 years full no trade clause and a trade bonus if he gets moved after the no trade clause expires.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Interesting. Im guessing the Jays liked Gausman more than Ray? Possibly. Atkins tried to sign Gausman last season, and could have been trying to acquire him longer than that for all we know. He may have just preferred Gausman to Ray, or maybe Ray wanted more from the Jays than he took from the Mariners. Either way, I think the Jays made the right call here. Ray just has too much potential volatility in performance for me.
Stottlemyres_Bloody_Chin Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 You guys raise some good points. I just hope the new Gausman is the real Gausman. Whereas Ray used to be good and found it again in Toronto, Gausman was meh until San Fran
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Author Posted November 29, 2021 The Jays offered Gausman $40M over three years last offseason. They offered Ray $8M over one year. It's pretty clear they've liked Gausman more as a pitcher for a long time and maybe their internal projections still like Gausman more.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Interesting. Im guessing the Jays liked Gausman more than Ray? or maybe the last few days the Jays never wanted this to drag out too long with Ray and just went with someone 100% certain to sign here and not miss out on either player.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Gausman + draft pick at $110M > Ray at $115M. This
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 It would be interested to know if the Jays preferred Gausman over Ray or Ray preferred other teams over the Jays. Either way I think I'm happy with Gausman + the pick.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Interesting... I thought Ray would sign for a bit more.

Whereas Ray used to be good and found it again in Toronto, Gausman was meh until San Fran Have you actually looked at their stats? Since 2016 fWAR Ray 3.3, 3.3, 0.9, 2.3, -0.4, 3.9 Gausman 3.1, 2.6, 2.3, 1.6, 1.6, 4.8 They are both 2 pitch pitchers - Gausman's shown significantly better command over his career, while Ray's overcome the walks by striking out more. Ray's control was the best of his career (BY FAR) last year, while he had an extremely unsustainable LOB%.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 It would be interested to know if the Jays preferred Gausman over Ray or Ray preferred other teams over the Jays. Either way I think I'm happy with Gausman + the pick. My spidy sense is that Ray preferred other teams. Perhaps because of the whole Covid, border, Buffalo Blue Jays hassle and the potential for it to continue to some degree.

As good as Ray was, there are two major red flags: he's a two-pitch pitcher, and his command has abandoned him for entire seasons at a time in the past. I mean he’s also got a historic K rate and Gausman has a set of his own red flags.. it’s definitely not a clear cut choice at the very least IMO

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I view Gausman as slightly safer than Ray because he can get opposite handed batters out more effectively. A RHP that can neutralize LHBs is safer to me because that's the hardest thing for a RHP to do. Idk how important this would be in the decision-making process, but the teams in our division seem very heavy on RHB. Maybe. RHP makes more sense to invest in over a LHP. Judge, Stanton, Sanchez, Voit, Bogaerts, Martinez, Mancini, etc. IIRC Ray didn’t pitch so well against the Yankees last year, especially down the stretch
The Iceman Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Gausman + draft pick at $110M > Ray + a draft pick at $115M. fixed it
