wilko Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Jesus. Lots of projections it was going to be quiet off season early with big labour agreement hanging in the balance. This has been head spinning so far lol. Simean got more/longer than I thought and Ray got less. Its wild so close to Glausman's deal but the draft pick, and Jays must like how he projects better. I wonder if some info about the labour talks got out to the teams/players. s***'s been nuts the past few days.

JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 We need a 3rd baseman and a few legit relievers and we have a shot at the WS. Too bad we lost Ray but was he sustainable? We are getting a decent draft pick out of it. I love the Shatkins. We will have a winning team for many years with them in charge. Now if they can only get us a decent manager.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I would honestly argue we should expect the Offense/bats to be LESS healthy this year. Last year the only important guys that got injured were Springer and Biggio. There’s a very real possibility we go through a stretch in 2022 without Bo, without Spinger again, without Teo, etc. I don’t agree with your assessment on the team as a whole though. Losing Ray and Semien doesn’t automatically mean we win less games next year. Good point. Aside from Springer who was a big deal, we got so lucky on offensive and rotation health overall in 21. Bo, Vlad, Teo, Simean made the line up day in day out. Braves won without Ozuna, Acuna Jr and Soroka.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Didn't Teo miss a few weeks? A little from covid and having a child i think. Still played in 143/162

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Have to say I’m a little disappointed. I thought they went with Gausman because Ray was holding out for much more than he was worth. The contracts being similar it seems clear they preferred Gausman. I hope we target Rodon

I think they're still 1 SP short also. Someone in the 3-4 range would be nice. If Pearson makes the rotation, there's certainly going to be innings limits on him. Even Manoah will have some starts skipped likely to ensure he doesnt push too far past 140 IP. Yeah, Striploin can make some spot starts throughout the year and cover for some inevitable injuries, but ideally we need 8-9 starters ready to go and by my count right now... Berrios, Gausman, Manoah, Ryu as written in stone, then in pencil... Pearson, Stripling... and in virtually invisible ink you have guys like Logue, Francis, Kay, Hatch.

flafson Verified Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 IÂ’m really shocked about this, at that price we should have had both pitchers IMO. I find it hard to believe either Ray or front office werenÂ’t interested in a reunion. I also find it hard to believe front office preferred getting the pick than retaining Ray, itÂ’s not a first round pick, more like a third or fourth round pick.

I always thought it was after the second round somewhere in the 60s but this says otherwise I'm not sure if this is correct but thats what it says. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/11/mariners-sign-robbie-ray.html In signing Ray, who rejected a qualifying offer in Toronto, the Mariners will surrender their third-highest selection in the 2022 draft. Toronto, meanwhile, will pick up a compensatory pick at the end of the first round by virtue of the fact that Ray signed for more than $50MM in guaranteed money.

Front office probably wasn’t comfortable having 3 pitchers on 100million+ contracts. Plus Ryu at 20 per for 2 more years

Looks like a 2nd Rd pick per mlb.com rules: "The 2017-21 Collective Bargaining Agreement rules state that if the team that loses the free agent is a revenue-sharing recipient, based on its revenues and market size, then the selection -- if and only if the lost player signs for at least $50 million -- will be awarded a pick between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A of the 2022 MLB Draft. If the player signs for less than $50 million, the compensation pick for those teams would come after Competitive Balance Round B, which follows the second round. The following 13 teams currently qualify for these picks: Brewers, Cleveland, D-backs, Mariners, Marlins, Orioles, Pirates, Rays, Reds, Rockies, Royals, Tigers and Twins. • If the team that loses the player does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, its compensatory pick will come after Competitive Balance Round B. The value of the player's contract doesn't matter in this case. The 15 teams in this category: Angels, Astros, Athletics, Blue Jays, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Giants, Mets, Nationals, Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox, White Sox and Yankees."
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Front office probably wasn’t comfortable having 3 pitchers on 100million+ contracts. Plus Ryu at 20 per for 2 more years I think it makes more sense to spend the remaining money on a good infield player, more bullpen help and more of a reclamation starter type than concentrating so much into the rotation.

I hope we target Rodon It's kind of puzzling to me as Ray flashed brilliance and made the all-star team in years past - 2 pitch pitcher or not the guy has electric stuff as witnessed by his two pitches earning him a Cy Young. Mariano Rivera had one pitch, David Wells was mostly a 2 pitch guy. The money and years and opt-out I can't think would be an issue. Maybe they liked Gausman more but I am not really sure why. The only thing left is that there must have been an issue with Ray's relationship with the Jays. Of course, it may have been family and location reasons. I understand why people move from Toronto to British Columbia for their retirement for example.

This assumes the CBA remains the same - knowing our luck they'll change the rules and we'll get zilch.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Yeah he accepted the QO after the 2020 season from San Fran so he wasn't eligible to receive one again. Worked out well for him to turn down 3/40 last year, take the 1/18 QO and upped his value massively and got paid now.
