The worst player on this team is Grishuk, who might still provide positive value. The next one after him is a toss up between Espinal, Biggio and some faceless #8 BP pitcher. Let that sink in for a moment. This team has come a long way from granting 1,000+ PA a year to Ryan Goins and John McDonald types. That, over anything else is a sign this team is legit.

I'm still a little terrified that as good as this team is on paper, a s***** bullpen flushes it all down the toilet again. I hope I'm just underrating our pen but I'm not completely confident in them.

There's been a lot of addition by subtraction in the pen, but relivers are notoriously volatile so it will almost always be an X factor... The pen is where I'd be focused for the rest of the off-season, but I do like the pieces that have been picked up so far though.

If we more or less stand pat right now, you have to believe that there will be money available and there are certainly prospects available to fix any bullpen issues. I think we were truly willing to add a guy like Freeman and a 30 million dollar salary.

Chapman is projected to get 9.5M in his upcoming arb 2 season

Where is expected payroll at the moment?

Yes

Stripping and Pearson are both likely in the pen this year minus fill ins for SP injuries

Still favour another high end piece for late innings though including possible deadline trades

Santiago Espinal gained about 15 pounds over the winter and he’s looking to drive the ball more this year.

The message to him has been be prepared to move around but his work will be middle infield spots now.

“I’m ready, man. I’m ready to turn some double plays with Bo.”

I wonder who plays a better SS now (as a backup to Bo)...Espinal or Chapman

There are very few situations where Chapman would be playing anywhere but 3B, maybe as an in-game injury replacement or something, but there's really no need to ever start him at SS.

I understand that. I'm just wondering who's actually better defensively as a SS...I'd always heard that Chapman would have been a good defensive SS (like a Machado). Is Espinal legit defensively at SS?

Are shiifts banned for THIS season??

No but if the idea is to give guys DH rest at regular intervals, put Bo at DH every 2 Ryu start or whatever, given the high percentage of Ryu grounders to left side. This is assuming Espinal is the better SS

Espinal actually graded as a better 3B than Chapman last year. Obviously defensive stats are a bit less black and white than pitching/batting stats, and Espinal also played less than half the innings at 3B so the sample size is smaller, but he's a VERY good defender (though definitely not better than Chapman, despite the stats...)

In regards to the bullpen, how much do you value having the 8th man having options to work the AAA-Mlb shuffle?

Not a lot of room to work with as bp is capped at 8

1-7:

Romano

Mayza

Garcia

Cimber

Richards

Stripling

Merryweather (if healthy won’t be optioned)

Borucki(no options)/Phelps(options?), new lefty we signed (options)/Pearson(won’t be optioned if healthy), FA/trade(won’t be optioned)

Vasquez is a really interesting sign, and the fact that he's got an option improves that deal a lot. I think there's a good chance he breaks camp w/ the team though.

Adding chapman's expected salary would put them right around 162 million.

Yes I took it as the kiss of death to borucki unless he rips it up in camp

We thinking Kirk catches 60 and dh 60 as roster is constructed? (Without moreno coming up)

Remaining 100g as dh:

Springer 40

Teo 10

Lgj 10

Vlad 10

Bo 10

Biggio (if bounce back) 10

Chapman 10

Gives grichuk about 300Ab

I mean would you assume this is the plan going into the season as of now, knowing injuries are going to ultimately make a big difference.

We could use another bankable RP, but at this stage I'd be tempted to just put Pearson in the BP and let him work on his stuff with Pete and the major league coaches. You can try and stretch him out after that if you think its a possibility.

I don't really think you need to give Biggio DH reps, even if he bounces back. Unless there's some serious need to get both he and Espinal into a game at the same time, but I can't see that happening.

Of course, we do have Chuckles, so you never know what that dude will do...

Mike Wilner

@Wilnerness

Ross Atkins just spoke, obviously thrilled with #Bluejays acquisition of two-time platinum glove winner Matt Chapman. Says no other moves are imminent, team very happy with what it has in-house, but if there’s a lefty hitter who is better than a righty they have, he’s interested.

Kinda what I was thinking. Baseball is a long season and at least 10 times a year you say “wtf is he dhing?”

If biggio is rocking a 360 obp with his base running skills while espinal is holding his own with the stick, 10g wouldn’t surprise me.

I think 2 inning outings 2x a week would work for me for Pearson. Come in about 100 ip for regular season

Wish we could trade Grichuk for a reliever and then bring back Dyson as the 4th OF.

No. Dyson is well past his usefullness. Below replacement level without a doubt
