Laika Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 So a rare small bit of negative news from this offseason, the Jays reached agreements with 16 of their 18 league min guys on the 40-man roster. The two guys they didn't were Bichette and Manoah, who deliberately took pay cuts to indicate that they weren't happy with the team's offers. https://www.sportsnet.ca/article/contracts-renewed-for-bichette-manoah-after-failing-to-reach-agreement-with-blue-jays/ Probably not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things but also not exactly ideal. Don't think it would have killed the team to offer Manoah something like 750K and Bo something like 800K. Nah this is agent f***ery. I am 80% sure.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 Nah this is agent f***ery. I am 80% sure. Looks like you're 50% right. Based on the comments in this article, it sounds like Bichette was involved in his decision and Manoah has no f***ing idea what's going on and it's the agent's play on his side. https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/bo-bichette-on-blue-jays-pre-arbitration-system-i-disagree-with-the-formula/ Why would either of these two players turn down those higher salaries, knowing that by doing so they would earn less — $23,550 in Bichette’s case; $6,200 in Manoah’s — this season? “It's pretty simple — I disagree with sticking to a formula to value us as players.” Bichette said. “I think that there's more to it than the way that they view us. I think that for players, that’s not the right way to do it.” “It was a decision that me and my agent came down to,” Manoah said, “Competitively, we think that this was the best decision and that it will help us in the long run.”
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 I'm okay with some agent drama but I really hope we don't see any Paul Marner/Michael Nylander type ******** come into play with the Jays' young core. Hope none of their dads are annoying ****s. Would be nice to see them locked up sooner rather than later so there's no anxiety around that.

With legit young guys it's all about arb trajectories and big contracts. Whether they make 750k or 700k in these league min years is just irrelevant. So I think some agents must have the opinion that these league min years are best used posturing. And s*** like this is what they think is effective at, I dunno... showing strength? showing that you are 100% committed to your own paradigms of self-evaluation?
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 Feels like a cheap way for agents to put make the team look cheap to try to put pressure on them in future negotiations. This is the kind of thing that the average fan who doesn't understand how this works will get up in arms over how the Jays are penny pinching for $6000 over Manoah, etc, etc.
jerb Verified Member Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 Arden Zwelling @ArdenZwelling "We have been approved for a significant renovation of Rogers Centre," says Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro. Budgeting, planning, & design currently ongoing. Work is expected to begin next off-season with a target completion date of 2024. Plans expected to be unveiled by May. Arden Zwelling @ArdenZwelling Majority of renovation will focus on Rogers Centre’s lower bowl and concourses; won’t be much done to exterior of building. Modernizing player facilities and fan experience are biggest priorities, per Shapiro. Arden Zwelling @ArdenZwelling The renovation is intended to buy the Blue Jays 10-15 years to continue devising a longer-term stadium solution, per Shapiro. Ultimately, club will need to build a new ballpark, either in current location or elsewhere in the city. Arden Zwelling @ArdenZwelling Total cost of the privately-funded renovation project is expected to be announced in a couple months when plans are unveiled. Expectation today is that around 30 per cent of the work will be completed next off-season, with final 70 per cent occurring in winter of 2023-24.
jerb Verified Member Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 Mitch Bannon @MitchBannon #BlueJays President Mark Shapiro just met with the media. Big takeaways: - Rogers Centre renovation is coming over the next 2 years - new stadium still in play, but that’s next 10-15 years - team payroll can still go up, “Not top 5, but close.” Mitch Bannon @MitchBannon Payroll quote was from long-term context, baking in new revenues from renovation, etc. Here’s full quote: “I think there’s an opportunity for us to sustain much higher payrolls. Not in the top five, but certainly close to that." He didn't get specific on 2022 remaining $ room
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 one thing the FO don't get enough credit for are the upgraded player facilities. Even the efforts they made for our Spring Training complex and Buffalo were big feats

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 I still really think this team could use another reliever or 2. But this front office has consistently not spent money on the bullpen. Kenley Jansen to a big one year deal is the type of deal I wanted to see.

We'll add AT LEAST 2 relevant bullpen arms during the season. Likely more.

That's the kind of charge that can stop a guy from getting across the border.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 Well that's not good. That's the kind of charge that can stop a guy from getting across the border. He probably doesn't have to worry about that anymore.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 What a f***ing *******. Odd that no mainstream MLB news or reporters have picked up on this. That report has been up for well over an hour. They're usually faster than that on stuff like this.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 He probably doesn't have to worry about that anymore. I dunno. The Jays didnt release McGuire for jacking off in a parking lot, so a speeding ticket while being a bit tipsy may not result in termination either. It sure could though. Which would suck...
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 "Deputies said Walker failed his field sobriety tests and admitted to drinking four beers at a “bar/eating facility.” eating facility sounds like it was a Blue Jays facility lol oops f***
