If I didn’t have the Red Sox, I’d think the laundry cart would be kind of cool. Maybe it’s me as a guy that hit 40 already, but you’d think climbing in-and-out of a laundry cart might lead to some fluke tweaked back or something though
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 So last year I pin pointed Semien as my FA pick to click, the Jays went and signed him, and he put up a Top 3 MVP season. If Shapiro/Atkins read this board (they probably do for my posts) then they need to look at Rodon. He'd be a great pickup for this team. He's a unique player that would benefit greatly from a smart organization like ours who could manage his innings effectively.

I would agree with that, but I feel like we are missing something with Rodon. The White Sox did not give him the QO. As a Boras client he was almost surely going to reject it, but even if the White Sox were afraid he would accept, why would that thought scare them? A 1/18 deal for a SP like him, especially if they wanted him to prove that 2021 was not a fluke, was pretty much a no brainer contract. The only reason not to qualify him (that I can think of) was if they were afraid of his health. Who knows, maybe this is a Ryu situation where health concerns are overblown and his market will be lessened because of it. If that's the case, then I think you might be on to something.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 What type of contract will it take to land him? 3 year $45M? I'd do that easy. Seems like a general rule of thumb is to take whatever contract you think seems fair, and then add one extra year. So it might be 4 for 60 for him and I'd do that as well; I'd even up the AAV some if necessary. That'd lock him up from age 29-32. Plan on an average of 120-135 innings per year with the hopes that you get an average of 150+ which could produce a lot of surplus value. I wouldn't even try to get him over 180 in any individual year. He's just not a workhorse type.

Yeah I agree they might know something about his health but the White Sox are also dumb as hell. They picked up Kimbrel's option with the expressed intent to trade him. Expressing their urgency to deal him has to take a bite out of their leverage as it is, but he's also an expensive reliever who is providing no surplus on that contract and since it's the offseason teams can sign other relievers at market rates anyway. It's almost like they are going to have to eat a decent bit of salary to get anything of value at which point the whole ordeal makes no sense. So I wouldn't be surprised if they just screwed the pooch on Rodon.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 Hopefully the Jays land a good SP in free agency. We need two of them and it'd be nice to not have spend a ton of prospect capital to get them.

Will leave plenty of cash for in season moves.

Would your rather have Rodon for 4 years $60M and Jon Gray for 3 years $45M or Robbie Ray for 6 years $130M? I think Rodon and Gray have enough upside that I'd rather the depth.

Honestly I was hoping maybe they'd be able to sign both in free agency (keep the prospect pipeline stacked up), and they still might, but starting to look less likely with every SP signing.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 Rodon is injured a lot. You sign him and you'll be lucky if you get 120-130 innings out of him. That might work out OK for the Jays though if they still have Pearson and are trying to ramp his innings up gradually. Right now my pipe dream is Scherzer and Rodon both on 2-3 year deals. Scherzer Berrios Rodon Ryu Manoah Pearson Stripling I'd love to go into the season with that SP depth.
Key22 Verified Member Posted November 25, 2021 Posted November 25, 2021 I see some fans opposed to signing Ray long term. I suspect he will get $150/6 as a floor. Not really sure why - the Jays gave $80/4 to a fat out of shape heavily injury-prone Ryu out to his age 36 year old season. Ray is a beast - not been injured - and 6 years would take him to his 36 year old season. 2 pitches - so what - he doesn't need no stinkn third pitch.

jerb Verified Member Posted November 25, 2021 Posted November 25, 2021 Mitch Bannon @MitchBannon The wait is over! The #BlueJays signed their first free agent of the offseason yesterday. Toronto inked 27 y/o OF Nathan Lukes to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, per his agency. Lukes posted a .808 OPS in AAA last season for the Rays.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2021 Posted November 25, 2021 Just chiming in with this again. Ray will not be getting more money than Berrios. And if somehow he does, it should not be with the Jays. 6/150 is a ridiculous overpay. 5/100 is reasonable but I would still have a mixed opinion on that. I prefer some of the other suggestions in here.
