jerb Verified Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Blake Murphy @BlakeMurphyODC Just told by @JimBowdenGM on air that he's also hearing 7/$140M for Jose Berrios. Good deal at first blush. That term for a player of Berrios' age and profile is fine (to age 34) and $20M AAV is within expected range. Nice to get that done early.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Uhmm... shouldn't this have it's own thread??? lol
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Keep dreaming guys... that trade starts and ends @ Moreno! Trading Moreno would be stupid. He could realistically impact 3B in April. If Cleveland wants that much other teams and the Jays will pass. And the longer they keep Ramirez the more his value drops.

Yeah, that's what I mean, Toronto won't trade Moreno, Cleveland won't move Ramirez without Moreno, people should jump off this cloud, it's a dream.

Here's hoping the Jays Brass is waiting for the value to drop....then move in with the kill shot! Edited November 16, 2021 by Virgil_Hiltz
jerb Verified Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Jon Morosi @jonmorosi Even after the José Berríos extension, the #BlueJays are working diligently to upgrade their rotation. They continue to talk with their own free agents -- Ray and Matz -- as well as Kevin Gausman, among others. They've also spoken with the #Marlins on their starters. @MLBNetwork

I would like Ray/Gausman + Gray. Who do you think costs more; Matz or Gray? If they're equal, I definitely want Gray over Matz.

Cbert Verified Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Gray will cost more. Matz is currently expected to be 3/36, Gray 3/45 I’d take Matz, trade for a Marlins/A’s pitcher and bring back Semien. Once Moreno arrives for 3B, that is a terrifying lineup and rotation. Hopefully there’s enough in the budget to get a guy like McHugh for the pen, too.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Gray will cost more. Matz is currently expected to be 3/36, Gray 3/45 Gray is worth an 3M AAV over the same period than Matz, so I would still do that. Gray in the right situation has ace upside, Matz does not.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 How many years have people been posting about trying to get Gray here? Feels like since he was in primary school.

I think the board first started advocating for him the summer of his 8th grade year. He was getting groundballs at a 51% clip
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 The Blue Jays were in on Syndergaard prior to his deal with the Angels. That's the second starter we've heard the Jays were in on that had a qualifying offer attached.

jerb Verified Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1 Heard multiple teams were in on Syndergaard at above $18.4M qualifying offer. #Bluejays were among those. Not sure if Yankees made an offer, but they were staying up on his market. They would have great insight into the pitcher from their new third base coach — Luis Rojas.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Right? It's like Ryu and Springer never happened. Who?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Right? It's like Ryu and Springer never happened. They're in on every FA every off-season. Learned to not get too excited. I'm expecting they'll sign two meaningful players (Semien and Ray....or replacements)...obviously no idea which as they're in on everyone. Anything beyond that I will consider a bonus. I think they'll add a Matz replacement as well but I don't see it being a significant name...similar to Matz where it's a guy who hasn't quite hit his stride or is coming off a down season.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Sounds like the Jays may have made an offer between $21-25M for Syndergaard.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 There's no way Shatkins gives that up for 2 years of Ramirez. No s*** Sherlock. That’s why its called the asking price. If you were Cleveland you’d start at the top too. And, as we just saw with Berrios, that’s 2 years of exclusive extension negotiation
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Sounds like the Jays may have made an offer between $21-25M for Syndergaard. I'd rather give that money to Justin Verlander.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 I'd rather give that money to Justin Verlander. The Jays are in on Verlander too but he's looking for a multi-year deal. Gonna take something like $40M/2. Here's what I've seen so far: Word is that the teams that were in on Syndergaard also have interest in Verlander. That includes three AL East clubs — the Yankees, Blue Jays and Red Sox. Toronto and Boston made aggressive offers for Syndergaard. It is not publicly known if the Yanks did. From Joel Sherman's column. | Link And then this from Peter Gammons:

Even if it's a 1 or 2 year deal for Verlander, I cannot see us committing so much to our starting pitching.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Verlander as the main SP signing would be very risky but have huge upside too. Considering we started last season with a staff of Ryu, Diesel, Zeuch, Matz and an unproven Ray and ended up with one if the better rotations in baseball despite Ryu being decidedly average I think I'd be ok starting the season with Berrios, Manoah, Ryu, Verlander, as the top 4 guys.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 This would pretty much put us out of the running for Ray right? Even if it's a 1 or 2 year deal for Verlander, I cannot see us committing so much to our starting pitching. Hard to say. Ray and Verlander at 20 million each puts us around 145 million in payroll. That leaves us some wiggle room to get a third baseman and a reliever, which are really the only other needs. Ray Berrios Verlander Ryu Manoah That's like 70 million, but it's awfully nice and costs no prospects.

If we could get a Verlander/Scherzer/Kershaw on a 1 or 2 year deal, I'd easily prioritize bringing Semien back over Ray. I prefer Semien over Ray regardless because I'm so much more confident that Semien could duplicate his season again. And I should probably take Kershaw off that list since the Dodgers must know what's up with his elbow if they didn't even tender him.

Let's assume that the Jays have $180 million to spend - which is probably closer to reality - with this in mind - what would you do? One of those fan 590 pundits claimed that Shapiro said they could get close to the salary tax - if that quote is true then $180m is still "light." I think they have more financial might than some folks on these forums think. I remember when the front office made a play for Cole with $300M offer - he went to the Yanks but I think the Jays are in that top-end market if they want to be. Correa and move Bo to second. $330/10 - the Jays can do that.
