THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I see it the same way BTS does. Two straight years in the pen, after a career high 45-ish innings in the minors? He'll need at least a year just to stretch out, never mind actually contribute in any meaningful way as a starter. I guess it's possible he can go from 80 innings to 160, or until his arm explodes, but that type of transition is not easy, and it becomes more difficult the longer he's a reliever. Wouldn't shock me at all if he never starts a game for the Jays. Only way I see it working is if he struggles as a reliever this season and is sent down to stretch out. If it were up to me, I would use him as a multi-inning guy in hopes to stretch him from 76 IP, last season, to 110 IP this year. Doing this could bridge the innings jump a bit, and potentially allow a jump to 150 IP in 2017 without blowing his shoulder.

There's an unknown here that really prevents any of us from commenting on how this should be handled: we have no idea what they think of his ability to hold up under a starter's workload. This is a kid who's only 21, has already had TJS, and had never thrown 45 pro innings in a season before throwing 69 last year. It would be perfectly defensible for the team to doubt his durability as a starter and prefer to keep him in a role where he throws 60-70 high leverage innings a year. Or maybe they think he can start, and he will be stretched out next spring. Either way, we kind of have to just defer to their determination of the best role for him.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 We also don't know how he'll do in the starters role. We know his fastball is real good. But his change-up and slider have gone through different degrees. He had a sick change-up earlier in the year but stopped using it and instead went to his sick slider. I hope he'll go back to a three pitch mix out of the bullpen just to prep him for a starter role

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 The conversion from reliever to starter isn't only the number of innings. Rest days, routines and type of training/preparation also change.

Hopefully their line of thinking isn't the same. Maybe get him to 90 or so innings this season, start in the minors next year and finish in the majors.

BTS Community Moderator Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Hopefully their line of thinking isn't the same. What does this even mean? The same as what? The gist of my post was that the team will let internal evaluations of his projected durability dictate his role, and we don't really have the information to complain either way. You seem to want to pick a fight, but it really isn't there.
Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Without a doubt they are going to try him as a starter. Shapiro went to Harvard, he's smart

Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 You mean the Carlos Martinez who's season ended early last year with shoulder injuries? Well he Pitched close to 100 innings more then he did in 2014 and it happened in September. It's not like it was a 2-3 month injury.

Right on Said this recently. Pillar has the skills to be leadoff but he has the same arrogant, stubborn attitude like JPA. Won't listen to people who know better and thinks he is the shiz. I bet he thinks all the fans you want him to walk more are nerdz as well. Wish we could trade the idiot at the peak of his value.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Cut Pillar some slack. There's a difference between recognizing that you're not good at something, and refusing to acknowledge the value of taking a walk.

It is a bit of a save that he didn't bash walking and just said it not an easy skill to develop. He was a valuable player for our team last year. He just reminds me too much attitude wise of the dumb cocky players we've had recently. It isnt from this comment that I am getting how hard headed he is. Nevertheless, he shouldn't be the leadoff hitter.
