What about trading with Cincy? Not sure what it would cost to get a Castillo, Votto package and alternate Votto and Vlad between DH and 1B. Toss a pen arm in too maybe

Assuming Votto even allows a trade here, it would lessen the cost to get Castillo. There's nothing the Reds want more than to get rid of Votto's money. Im not necessarily in favor of such a move though, while still a good eye at the plate he doesnt add much to the lineup on either O or D and costs 25 million per year.

Don't need Votto

I'm sure Toronto will be talking with CIN about Mahle and Catillo, and OAK about Montas.

Are there any other good SP on the block?

Jose Quintana could be a cheap get for us from the Pirates.

If you like watching SPs like Kikuchi and Ryu get knocked around, you will LOVE Zach Davies and Jose Quintana in the AL East :P

No need for Votto. Vlad takes the lions share of 1B (as he should) and the DH is a revolving door that already doesn't get enough AB's for a guy like Kirk.

Trade for Votto and get Kirk ABs in Left Field. Problem solved.

I would pay big bucks to see Kirk in the outfield. That's some A1 entertainment right there.

At least Davies will throw strikes that get crushed and not mind numbing walk after walk lol

Atkins has been going big with a lot of his moves. I think Montas/Castillo is more likely than going with fringey types like Quintana.

Yea I think so too. In the interview he gave after Ryu was confirmed out he said they have the capabilities to be creative with what they do. I think thats code for saying they could spend big for a substantial upgrade to the pitching staff.

He’s went big when it made sense and we had a real need, and even then he went big in starting pitching and not the bullpen.

Last year, we needed to improve and win a high percentage of games to get in. That requires a big move. If we are solidly in at the deadline, I don’t see a big move coming.

This does not compute?

Am I the only one who sees a changeup with arm side tail and not a screwball? I've never heard it described as a screwball before.

A screwball basically is (or can be) a changeup variant

The difference being the pitcher has a slightly different grip or slightly different arm action to emphasize armside movement

Check Honeywell's grip

If we are solidly in a wild card game but quite far back in the division, then there’s no real reason to make a big move. If we are fighting to just get into the playoffs like last year, then there is.

The best screwballer of all time, Carl Hubbell, threw the pitch so much that his left arm had turned 180 degrees and his left palm faced away from his body by the end of his career. The pitch is heavily influenced by arm action, even moreso than grip in some cases.

I need to see pictures of this, 'cause this sounds hyperbolic. (but f***in' cool if true!)

This year is not like past year. This is the first year the Jays are legitimate championship contenders. Last year, the internal evaluations likely had the team on the cusp, but not quite where this front office has been working towards since they arrived.

Circumstances matter, and last year, the Jays were hovering a few games over .500 at the half. This is a data driven front office, and they likely evaluated the percentages, and made moves which would help their odds, but also continue to build towards their ultimate goal of constructing a roster, legitimately positioned to challenge for championships. Both Shapiro and Atkins have reiterated, when the time was right, the organization would have the resources needed to go after whatever was needed to put them over the top.

We will see at the trade deadline, but I expect Atkins to be in on many available targets, like he was in the offseason.
