I'm not so sure.  Robert Jr is getting expensive and he was awful last year - in addition to always being hurt.  I'm not sure he commands a Top 100 prospect.  Someone like Ricky T, who's a former Top 100 prospect (and who would return to it quickly if he returns healthy) should be enough.

I'm kind of surprised that there isn't more push back on signing Alonso on this board. Especially if it ends up being three plus years.  I mean one dimensional player, will be on the wrong side of 30, slash line decline over the last three years and will probably strike out 160 times next season, a slug on the base paths, etc.  

Don't get me wrong, we need the HR's but...

It's 2am, the bar is closing, all the hotties told us to F off and left with Chad Thundercock (Dodgers, Mets) and we just really want someone to touch our pee pees so the 5 sitting at the bar doesn't look too shabby through our beer goggles. Probably going to regret it in the morning though.

I get what you're saying but the three years isn't a big deal when he was projected to get 5+. Ben Clemens predicted 7 years, 140 million!

Agreed it's probably not a smart signing, especially with the opt outs, and it's certainly not a logical position fit, but I think it's just the best of what's out there as far as making the 2025 team as strong as possible.

Boras had a bunch of clients who signed the 1+1(+1) deals last winter, two of them opted out/would have opted out (Snell/Chapman) and three opted in (Bellinger, Montgomery, Hoskins). Alonso is probably a 50/50 opt in for 2026. Teams are smarter now so they won't be fooled by home runs alone. He'll have to have a great season.

Would have to know what the alternative to Alonso. If it's a sensible trade for Robert, then I'd go that route. If it's Austin Hays, then just sign Alonso.

Robert Murray on his podcast today said that he never got the sense that Alonso to the Jays was ever close (referring to the “10 yard line” quote). So there’s a very good chance a lot of the social media buzz is BS. Apologies for doubting Winnie the Pooh and the other sources with 50 followers.

Yeah I hope they do trade for Mountcastle, or whoever really. It feels like Alonso isn't coming here until the Mets slam the door in his face

Pretty evident by Cohen basically playing hardball to the media about the negotiations . He's not taking Scott Boras's s*** and knows Pete wants to stay. The market clearly isn't as robust as he thinks it is.

Alonso is going back to the Mets.   I'd like to sign JD Martinez who would be a solid cheap DH option, but he's a Boras client too so we're not allowed to until Pete signs.  Maybe we have a handshake deal with Boras. Let me use you as leverage to get as much as I can out of Cohen and you can have JD Martinez.

I don’t really see JD working in this lineup. Santander won’t play OF everyday and JD locks up the DH spot and gives 0 flexibility. Alonso you could make a case for since he can play 1B, but Martinez really ties your hands.

If Alonso goes back to the Mets and Bregman to the 'stros, as is likely, Kim becomes the Jays target.

He'll give the Jays a leg up on future Korean players coming over.

So long as the price is right I'd love to get him. Maybe not a huge improvement over Clement but he's an improvement nonetheless and Clement can become the UT infielder. Then when Bo leaves Kim and Gimenez can play the middle infield.

Kim is going to miss the start of the season, and much like Varsho, it's probably going to be an adjustment for him once he gets back due to the nature of the injury. If it's a longer term/reasonable AAV type of deal then it makes more sense, but for 2025, not sure that's the best way to maximize wins. At least not the safest way. It wouldn't surprise me if the backup plan is Arraez. The Padres financial/ownership situation isn't good and I don't think it would take much to get him.

Yeah we could get Arraez for nothing more than a salary dump. They've got some good relievers we could tack on as well. He doesn't have the power we need, but it would be fun to have the batting champ on the roster.

Arraez is a 2 win player with a $14M AAV. He would be the DH. 

I think I would rather just sign a $5M 1 WAR player off the FA pile and then pay for a solid RP upgrade with the rest of that money. 

Could probably get something like:

ONE OF  Brendan Rodgers / JDM / Turner / Kike / Pham / Moncada, Canha, France, Rowdy, Rizzo etc. etc.
+
ONE OF Robertson, Jansen, Kimbrel, Ottavino, Finnegan, Coulombe, Barlow, Kelly, Robertson, Chafin, Jackson, Kahnle, Beeks etc. etc.
