Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 Wow right in the feels - now I'm crying at work. Thanks Omar. I will be the first to admit I've never really been a big fan of Buck, but that still makes me emotional. Like him or not, he's been the voice of the Jays for decades and I wish him nothing but the best (f*ck cancer). Kershaw v. Scherzer and the return of Buck on the same night? Special stuff right there...LFG Jays. jaysblue and Omar 1 1
Governator Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 It's hard to deny that Buck has that great old man voice for calling games imo. There's something about that that just resonates with me. He's our Vin Scully if you will and I'm good with that. jaysblue, Masterbather and Omar 2 1

Yeah but he doesn't know advanced statistics and doesn't love all the modern-day strategies and he hates catchers that catch on their knees and it really upsets the tofu and unsweetened soy beverage people of the world. jaysblue 1

We all know he doens't know advanced statistics etc. That doesn't change the voice for just listening to play-by-play. I don't need someone telling me rbis or wrc+ watching a game lol Spanky__99 and Masterbather 2

I think Buck has been slowly embracing advanced statistics more and more in recent seasons. The old school catchers all universally abhor catchers catching on one knee despite the fact that it's been shown to actually reduce passed balls/wild pitches and may help to prolong the careers of catchers due to much less wear and tear on their hips and knees.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 I will always have a bit of an issue with Buck and his inability to adapt as the game itself has. There are new young fans listening to him that he has an influence on. I think there's some responsibility to at least try and understand the changes we've seen over the past 10-20 years and provide some insight into why they've happened and the pros and cons associated with it. Adapt or die. Instead, he's always take the opportunity to complain about changes that have been made - just blindly b*tching about them at every turn, even when there's all kinds of evidence of the benefits they provide (such as catchers on 1 knee). It's always "back in my day, when baseball was way better" - always inferring todays game is sh*t. There's no way the team would hire someone with the same approach/attitude today. He also regularly says things that are just wrong. As long as your a casual, you don't notice it, so it flies under the radar, but it's bad sometimes. I guess that makes me a tofu and unsweetened soy beverage person for not liking the "old man yells at clouds" approach. That said - I do enjoy the voice and it's become the voice of summer for so long now that I do miss it. I'll certainly enjoy hearing him back in the booth - recognizing those days won't last forever.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 All I really need from the guys calling the game is to set the mood, capture the moments, tell the occasional story and provide interesting tidbits of behind the scenes information about players and whatnot that I otherwise might not know. Everything else I can find on my own and am probably already aware of. I think we're lucky to have a duo like Dan and Buck, and who knows how much longer we'll have them. They are very much Toronto Blue Jays baseball.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 Dan certainly has improved the broadcast and made Buck more tolerable. Buck & Tabby was difficult at times.

It's funny, every time my daughter sees me watching a game with him doing the announcing she complains about how annoying his voice is.

Yes Kershaw may not be the same guy anymore and who knows what Snell is right now, but it's a good thing we fattened up the stats in Colorado. ...at least we avoided Shota, Glasnow and Ohtani... All good. We're gonna light them up and send them into the record books Terminator 1

Last minute change had rookie Scherzer and Kershaw face each other... who become of the best pitchers of their generation

It makes you wonder what they might be considering in September?

If they have plans to bring him up in September the only things that matters to them is his innings and pitch counts...not if he starts the games in Buffalo or not

He made a couple relief appearances, during which he still threw innings/pitches like a starter would. The Jays may be doing this as an insurance policy (which would make a ton of sense). Or maybe they are considering a callup. Who knows. He'd have to be added to the 40 man by August 31st to be playoff eligible. I think there's a reasonable possibility that at least happens. Yesavage looks super polished. Spanky__99 1
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2025 Posted August 11, 2025 They're getting Yesavage ready for the potential role he'd fill for fhe Jays if he were needed. It doesnt mean he'll be called up but just gives the Jays options in September. Its probably what some of us hoped Manoah could be this season.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2025 Posted August 11, 2025 I think the time is right to put Springer back in the leadoff spot. He's gone from 5th to 4th to 2nd this year so I doubt he'll have an issue batting leadoff when he's done it his whole career. Our supporting cast has done a great job of getting this team in its current spot but its time for our best players to carry the team down the stretch. Vs Righties: Springer - Barger - Vlad - Bo - Varsho - Kirk - Lukes - Clement - Gimenez Vs Lefties: Springer - Bo - Vlad - Kirk - Barger - Clement - France - Varsho - Schneider

Whats the logic in changing the process that got them to there they are? Yes, id alter the lineup a bit too, just not drastically

The only guys that should be in the lineup 100% of the time with zero weight put into their splits with regard to starting are Bo, Vlad, Kirk, Springer, Santander (assuming health), Varsho and probably Lukes. Theur plave in the batting order should certainly change though. Varsho has some split issues, but should probably start the majority of games just because of his defensive prowess and the fact that Straw doesnt really give an advantage against LHP vs him. Giminez has fairly neutral splits, but they're just average, so when a lefty is up and you have a better option that doesn't suck on D (Clement or even Schneider), its defensible to make a switch. Clement and Barger both have very sizeable split problems that make it advantageous to deploy them more selectively. The great thing about the Jays right now is they really don't get dominated by lefty pitching so even if Barger, Varsho, Lukes or Gimenez don't start vs a lefty, chances are that lefty isnt going to be around very long and they'll get into the game anyways. Ya I totally get what youre saying and agree your points have more validity behind it as its gotten us this far. In the end, im just relying on what I always see in every sport and its when the chips are down, you want your best out there. There's still a lot of baseball left to help determine who our real best players will be by the end. I was just forecasting who I believe will be those players at this point in time down the stretch.
