insane bargain for TBR

sigh

Jays or Mets will end up paying Alonso twice that AAV for the same WAR

Seems like the injury may be more serious than we think? Far below his projected cost although obviously the opt-out gives him a second chance to rebuild his value. I wonder how far into the season he's projected to come back, and what the immediate recovery is for an injury like this one in terms of performance.

Kim is going to miss the first month of the season, and with a shoulder injury you never know how quickly the bat is going to return to form. Seems like teams had similar levels of concern given what he signed for. This seems like more of a 2026 move for the Rays, though obviously they probably won't mind if he opts out since it would mean his 2025 was good enough to do so.

Yes it's possible TBR gets little upside on it.

Kim could come back, struggle for a month, then be his normal self for the second half, opting out after proving he is healthy and setting himself up for a better deal.

Not even a rumor about Bregman makes me think we aren't even trying on him

Alonso starting to seem more unlikely too

I bet we pull off a trade

Yeah, the longer the Alonso saga drags out the more likely it seems like he's assuming the positioning and pulling the cheeks apart for Cohen so he can stay with the Mets

There was a rumour for us with Bregman but doesn't seem likely.  Alonso is sadly gonna go back to the Mets too.

Other than Roberts, can't think of an impactful bat that we could trade for.  This team needs a Donaldson like move... not asking for much right lol.

For another slap hitting 2b.

Actually now that I think of it an Arraez trade would be weird but that bad at all

As long as the Jays give up almost nothing

I bet the Jays could get Arraez and Suarez (didn't realize he can opt out after this year) both in a salary dump.

Maybe throw them a Buffalo Boy or two and I bet the Padres would even eat some salary. Or even move Straw to them as a way to dump salary. Their depth is so bad they could use him and even guys like Schneider and Lukes.

Those 3 for Arraez and Suarez would save them 16-17 million bucks which they could use to turn around and sign JDM and Quintana or something.

The only problem is Arraez even an upgrade over Will Wagner?

 Ha-Seong Kim: One year, $12MM

Tim: Braves / Anthony: Padres / Darragh: White Sox / Steve: Braves

Were it not for the shoulder injury that required surgery that will delay his start to the 2025 season, Kim would have ranked prominently on this list — likely settling into the top 10. The 29-year-old has proven himself a plus defensive player at three infield spots (shortstop, second base, third base), a plus runner (60-for-74 in steals over the past two seasons, 76th percentile sprint speed) and at least an average hitter at the plate. Kim doesn’t have huge over-the-fence power, topping out with 17 homers and sitting between .132 and .138 with his ISO over the past three seasons. However, he has clear gap power, draws plenty of walks (12.1% since Opening Day 2023) and fanned in a career-low 16.4% of his plate appearances this season.

A healthy Kim would profile as a clear everyday shortstop heading into next year, his age-29 season. It’s certainly possible that if a team feels comfortable with his medical outlook, they’ll largely overlook the rehab process and attempt to sign him long-term anyhow. Kim could also ponder two-year deals with opt-out opportunities, following in the footsteps of fellow Boras clients Michael Conforto and Rhys Hoskins after their own injuries of note. That type of deal would come with significant downside for a signing team, however. Both Conforto and Hoskins were expected to be ready for Opening Day in the first seasons of their two-year deals. Padres president of baseball ops A.J. Preller recently put forth a rough timeline of “May, June, July” when asked when Kim would be ready for game action.

More than most free agents on this list, Kim has a broad range of contractual outcomes. And, because so much of it depends on how his shoulder progresses in its rehab, it’s impossible to know exactly which path is the likeliest. What’s certain is that on a one-year deal — which could contain incentives based on playing time — could pave the way for a return to the open market next year and a chance at the type of substantial payday he might’ve commanded in absence of his current shoulder injury. The Padres, Braves, Giants and Tigers are among the on-paper landing spots, though Kim’s ability to play multiple positions could make him a fit on the majority of rosters.

.

I agree Org, although he was projected by MLBTR at 1/12M, I'm not so sure it's a steal as there's so much uncertainty for '25...

I have no idea how I screwed this post up, derp.

I mean - the Santander rumors swirled for a long time before we signed him...

The difference there was that the Orioles showed 0 interest in bringing him back.  The Mets with Alonso and now the Astros with Bregman is what makes People feel like they're both likely to go back.

The count down to sign Vlad is officially on.  We signed Santander.  That was a big step in the right direction to acquiring a guy Vlad would want to play with.  Our next signing should be a Vlad extension.  Sign the face of your franchise.  35 mil AAV  13 years....quit worrying about Vlad a decade from now.  Just sign him.

Random note :

Felt sick last night, went to bed early and made a whole lot of weird dreams. One of them being the Jays had signed Max Scherzer.

Woke up and found it weird as I don't consider him at all as a player the Jays would sign and I highly doubt he would consider the Jays at this stage of his career and their current state.

It’s too bad I don’t remember my dreams more often… they seem to have a better accuracy than most “insiders” 💁🏼‍♂️

We're literally 1 big bat away from checking off everything I wanted this offseason.  We'd be adding Gimenez on top of everything I alfeady thought was too outlandish to do.  One of Bregman/Alonso pleeaassseeee
