mphenhef Verified Member Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Ask yourself, does a contending team like the Braves/Dodgers even want Bo playing SS everyday with the way he’s currently playing? Would we get anything worthwhile? Would those teams be willing to pay the price of what Bo SHOULD be worth if his numbers were similar to career-norms? Idk man, the most likely scenario is they hold onto Bo and hope he finishes the season strong Teams will undoubtedly try to lowball for him based on that, but I do think teams would be quite interested as we've seen in the past when he gets on a heater he can absolutely carry a team (see Sept 2022). The calf issues might make it all moot though.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2024 Author Posted July 11, 2024 Bo hobbled with a bad calf again will put an end to his trade rumours. I suppose the next window to move him will be the off-season. Atkins may just wait until trade deadline 2025 hoping for a resurgent Bo. Instead he will move an expiring contract Bo and may get fleeced with a third round pick in return. What a mess.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 If Bo's injury keeps him from being traded at the TDL, hopefully he has a 150 wRC+ for the rest of the season. Boost that value for the off season at least.

Damn I'm starting to get shades of Josh Donaldson who had a rash of calf injuries in his last few seasons with the team that really cratered his trade value. Julian Merryweather 2.0 incoming at next year's trade deadline.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I'm not sure a good team would play Bo at short Because of his defense I assume? LA starts Mookie Betts at SS WS Champions start Seager at SS Bo is as good defensively as those 2, so I'm not sure your statement is correct. I suspect some teams would, some teams would prefer not to. Braves picked Arcia over Grissom last year due to defense, so maybe they wouldn't?

Why would you not play a better bat at SS if the D is equal? Why would LAD put Bo at SS and Mookie RF when you could put Mookie SS and a bigger bat RF?

Why would LAD put Bo at SS and Mookie RF when you could put Mookie SS and a bigger bat RF? Sorry - I don't get what you're saying. Obviously the Jays are only trading Bo if they get close to full value for him and if a team is willing to give that up, they're expecting Bo to hit like he has the past 4 years and not what he's done to date this year. LA would be trading for Bo and making him the SS as they don't want Betts there anymore. Bo is better defensively than Betts at SS. Could LA keep Betts at SS and add a RF instead? Sure they could. I assumed you were saying that good teams wouldn't play Bo at SS because he isn't a stud defensively. I don't think that's true.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I'm not sure a good team would play Bo at short Yeah especially if he's not hitting. For a Postseason team, Bo would be a small reclamation project right now. You hope he turns things around in August and September so there are no concerns with his bat heading into 2025.

Julian Merryweather 2.0 incoming at next year's trade deadline. Yeah that would really suck. Gotta hope Bo at least finishes 2024 strong so at least he would have some value in the offseason.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I'm not sure a good team would play Bo at short Why not? The 2021-2023 Blue Jays teams were all good and Bo played at short.

I assumed you were saying that good teams wouldn't play Bo at SS because he isn't a stud defensively. I don't think that's true. Dodgers were already moving Betts off short for Rojas because his glove is good. So I don't think they'd then go to Bichette when they already showed they were uncomfortable with a bad/mediocre glove SS. I think most good teams with adequate lineups would prefer a more QB type at SS. It's actually hard to find a fit for Bo. I'm guessing Arizona would sniff. He'd maybe fit BOS but I doubt they'd buy hard right now.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 The shortstop trade mark is pretty weak. It's really too bad that Bo wasn't hitting this season close to his career averages or else you definitely could have had a big bidding war for him. The only other shortstops available I think are Paul DeJong and maybe Ha-Seong Kim if the Padres decide to sell haha. Would still roll the dice on Bo over someone like DeJong if I'm a team contending for the Postseason. Kim would be a nice pickup if he's made available. Braves could really use an upgrade over Arcia at shortstop. Red Sox maybe as well over Rafaela but I don't see them trading for Bo. Dodgers could use a shortstop if they decide to move Betts over to 2B once he returns (Roberts hinted at it). But the Dodgers could go with a glove guy at short and add offense to other spots in the lineup, and be alright.

Julian Merryweather 2.0 incoming at next year's trade deadline. And unlike JD, Bichette comes with a very risky offensive profile (BABIP, low walks), so while I'd still expect Bo to bounce back next season, it's far from a certainty. Very slim chance a team trades anything good for him in the winter when that team can keep their prospects and just sign someone like Adames or Kim. He's either traded this July (unlikely), next July (probably), or leaves as a FA (if the 2025 team competes for a playoff spot). Not ideal.

MikeM said he didn't think a good team would play Bo at short, which suggests a good team wouldn't trust his defense at SS. Good teams are currently starting below average defensive SS's. Seager is a prime example. Seattle starts JP Crawford, Phillies start Trea Turner. None of those guys are significantly better than Bo defensively.

Atkins is buying for sure Especially if Bo is out from gettin moved, Atkins maybe be hoping they have a strong Aug/Sep and that’s the best path to keeping his job, over getting underwhelming prospects for the expiring contracts. I don’t see much selling. Little motivation to do so. Easy to manipulate the team too, just by saying “do we really want to turn the fans off for the sake of some guys that will likely never be anything”

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2024 Posted July 12, 2024 They need to move Bo- period! We have a unique situation where both ATL and LAD need a SS. The acquiring team will get 2 playoff runs with him. There is very little chance the Jays sign both Vlad and Bo, Bo being less likely. Bo has a good track record is still young, good body type and plays a premium position. Even with his struggles, he has a lot of value. We can get much more now playing the Dodgers vs Atlanta then we can in the off season or next year's trade deadline. Fool's errand thinking this Team will get good enough next year as compared to other Teams in our division's trajectory. Need to get young assets at highest value. Trade Bo now! They would most certainly be in play.

There are definitely a lot of other solid starters available Flaherty, Crochet, Eflin, Littell and Fedde. Out of those five, would rank Flaherty, Crochet and maybe Eflin ahead of Kikuchi. Littell has another 1.5 years of control, so some teams will value that extra year. Fedde has been really good as well and has another year of control, but don't view him as a shutdown SP in a short Postseason series. He helps you more getting to the Postseason than in a short series. Whereas we saw Kikuchi the other night how he can flat out dominate when he's on. The plus with Kikuchi is he's a lefty out of that bunch, and innings won't be an issue for him. Whereas Crochet, who knows if he needs to be on an innings limit down the stretch.

If your defense is subpar at shortstop, you at least gotta hit. Turner and Seager at least can hit and provide elite offensive numbers. So you can live with their subpar defense. JP Crawford offensively this season has been horrible. Out of all the teams contending for the Postseason, I only count the Braves and maybe the Red Sox where Bo would be a fit. Given their shortstop situation, they have nothing to lose rolling the dice on Bo. I see the Dodgers at least going back with Betts at short or even if they move him to 2B, they likely go with a glove first guy at short since offensively they have enough bats elsewhere.
