MikeM3 Verified Member Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 Luck box our way to a .60% win behind our grown men pitching staff until July when we can call up some position player breakouts from AAA to join everyday Ernie and Babe Schneider. That's the recipe.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 8 games in after last season trying to keep perspective. Not easy they way we have hit aside from JT and Davis but: End of April 2023 - Belt wRC+ was 48 and he ended up at 138 End of April 2023 - Chappy wRC+ was 1,000,000 and ended up at 110 Win one of the next two and we come out of this brutal road trip .500 somehow and lots of time left to get the O going.

I mean one has the IQ of a bag of hammers and can't make adjustments to MLB pitching, the other has T-rex arms with a 60 inch waste line. Coaching can only go so far.

All these guys raked in the minors. Maybe we should hire the minor league coaches?

I mean we are all guessing here and can never know for sure what's going on. Martinez has been the hitting coach since 2018 and it could be time for a change anyways. The average length of tenure for active MLB hitting coaches is about 2.4 years.

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Would AA ever entertain coming back? he just signed an extension that will keep him in Atlanta until 2031, so no.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 he just signed an extension that will keep him in Atlanta until 2031, so no. Oh well. We had our chance and decided he wasn't the one.
keggy Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Would AA ever entertain coming back? Not while Shapiro is here. The team has gotten worse since he's left and he's done nothing but win I'm not sure why he would even want to come back.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 don't forget, Shapiro offered AA a 5 year extension in 2015, AA told him to %$#%. a couple of months later the Dodgers hired him, the year after the Braves

leaffie Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 He did choose to leave, but that was after Rogers had already offered Shapiro the presidents job with the final say on everything. Word was that Rogers had already decided to fire AA back in July and then they started their run to the playoffs, so now Rogers had a problem, so they offered him a contract, and then pretended they were sorry to see him leave to cover their butts. No way AA would stay and work for Shapiro under those conditions.

I don’t know what I’m going to get, either. I think it was just cold weather more than anything. My first two innings, if you’re going to get to me, that’s when you’re going to get to me. Unfortunately, that was obviously the case tonight.”

Can you imagine that happening again anytime soon Like I said, he was pretty mediocre leading up to that '15 season. Did you see any longevity in the roster he constructed past maybe the 2016 season? We had a line up of guys well on the wrong side of 30 and some who were looking for pay days. We were the best team in baseball for one season and one season only. Thwre was no future in that roster. Sure it was fun but.it was going to crash whether he was there or not. Of course I don't see it happening any time soon, my criticism of AA while he was here has nothing to do with the current FO. As far as I'm concerned, Atkins is run of the mill. One saving grace is that his successor isn't going to be hamstrung by long term contracts Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk

Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk Been watching this team since the 80's through all it iterations. The MIA deal didn't work out. At the time, it made us Vegas WS favs before it imploded. Hindsight is always 20/20. He has always had balls and taken big swings. He was far from perfect and I dare say he has learned a lot from his time in TOR and elsewhere, like any exec should. The Tulo Reyes deal was a 2 way dump on bad deals with the Rockies. In terms of aging and bloated deals, its not that much diff than an aging Springer with 3/75 left, and Tulo was integral in the 15/16 runs. After watching for decades in the wasteland, the fan base got re-energized again. We had at that time the longest streak of any MLB team not being in a playoff game. Aside from Tulo I'm trying to think how many more aging players with bloated long term contracts he left. He also went all in on international money to sign Vlad and left that (which looked a lot more brilliant in '21 than '23 & '24 thus far lol) Martin was a FA AA signed who gave us a solid front end and 11 WAR on his 5/82 deal - 16M AAV. He was the first big name FA we signed in years, coming off a huge year in PITT. He signed extensions that got the best years of EE and Jose, under market, before they left. The JD trade was a heist. If Shatkins left today, they leave with us having the oldest line up and rotation in the AL East and our farm is ranked about 20th with Ricky still on it. Not one playoff series win and the window, arguably, is shrinking. (In an era where they have the benefit of MLB adding an extra wildcard- spot). And we will also have the back end legacy of some of our larger longer term FA deals. They have also over seen the renovation of of RC and upgraded our development facilities, and got the payroll up to a level where we can sign some big FA names more often again. Part of the reason this team even has the big payroll budget it does now to spend on buying a FA rotation is the legacy of the fan interest nation wide being re-kindled with the runs of 15/16 IMO. Its a mixed bag legacy at this time for both regimes I'd say.

Its a mixed bag legacy at this time for both regimes I'd say. That's fair and I probably overstepped on the bloated contracts aspect. Again, my critique of AAs time here isn't any sort of vote of confidence for Atkins. I do believe AA would have signed Bautista and EE to contracts but that's a different kettle of fish. I would have no problem if AA was retained but leading up to '15 trade deadline I'm pretty sure his tenure was ~.500 and I do get he didn't inherit much but I feel that sometimes people look at his tenure here with rose coloured glasses. I agree completely with your last sentence, it's a mixed bag and feel that unless we win a playoff series or two the pressure to fire Atkins will be too great to resist. Terrible.
leaffie Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 AA has had success both in TO and the Braves. Shapiro, longevity in Cleveland and TO, with very little success to speak of. The answer is always that AA stepped into a team with a great future and farm system and he would not have success once he had used someone else’s draft picks. But he has signed their stars to undervalue long-term deals, won a world series, and has a top rated team again. Shapiro has not signed any long term young stars. Maybe he will be proven right on Guerrero, but Bo should have been signed. I get the feeling Bo didnt sign because it was never offered. Doesnt matter, shapiro is an executive worrying about putting butts in seats. The wave of young talent never arrived, forcing the team to keep upping the payroll, and now 9 years later, we are hoping for luck and a resurgence from Ageing players. I dont mind missing playoffs, if you can see a path and a plan forward. But where is the plan. I saw the first game they ever played, have lived through JP years, watched thousands of games, and this is the most disappointed I have ever been. Whoever they hire to replace Shatkins has their work cut out for them.
