I'm already purchasing a customized Jays jersey with Ohtani's name on it!

I actually have an Ohtani Nippon Ham-Fighters Jersey I bought in Japan when I was there in 2017 haha!

Nice. If Ohtani signs with the Jays i'll get his face tattoo'd over my face.

I don't think you have to worry too much about that.

I really believe we are being used to drive the price up...I just don't see how TO can beat the west coast for a Japanese player. Plus the fact he is already in the LA area... We should concentrate on Soto IMO.

If Ohtani chooses to sign with another team then it's fine to pivot to Soto at that point.

Maybe just admit you're wrong and stop being a dick? $40M a year in endorsements isn't even that much. Ronaldo made $90M in 2023, Lebron made $75M, Steph Curry made $52M, Federer made $95M

Aaron Judge and Trout make $4-5/m douche. Baseball players don’t make that.

So what?

Prince enforcing is good. Sometimes you actually get the guy at a price you would want to pay, if the other team unexpectedly bows out or if nobody else wants to pay fair $.

It's not like they LOSE anything if/when he eventually signs with the Dodgers. Just a bit of time and attention. But it's OHTANI you have to give it the ol' college try if there is any chance at all.

Best player since Babe Ruth and we are in the finals. Yeah it's still probably a long shot but it's still a shot people.

If you don't feel some rustling in your jimmies right now then you need to see a doctor.

I don’t think it’s the smartest signing financially but will be happy to have him. I remember when the best we could hope for in an off season was giving Edwin 4/80

tbh for Toronto to still be in it perhaps they actually have the most $$ on the table right now?

Maybe most baseball players don't make that, but Ohtani has left the realm of normal baseball players and entered the realm of cultural icon.

If you googoo “ohtani endorsements 2022” first link says he makes 40m. Then further down an article on mlb.com says 20m. I also read on bref it was 30m.

So he doesn’t need the money. But the union won’t be happy if he takes less. His Asian probably wouldn’t be happy either since they work on commission

As I said, I’m sure the vast majority comes from overseas deals. If he’s American, he’s making what Judge makes. Still counts of course.

The fact that the Jays are allegedly still in the running for Ohtani is an accomplishment in itself even if he signs elsewhere. At this rate I just want him to sign somewhere, Toronto or otherwise, just so the off season can finally get moving.

Can't believe we're still in this actually

He must have some real interest in Toronto actually which is a good sign no matter what happens

I watched Craig Ferguson interviewing Carey Mulligan about Hollywood and Los Angeles. Skip to 38:25

I say you never know with Ohtani. He's lived there so he may like it. However, he's lived there and he may be like "Been there done that." For people who can afford to travel the world and who have buckets of cash - LA would not rank high on my list. Canada certainly would. Of course, with Ohtani money, he could buy dozens of houses all around the world and fly in private jets or massive Yachts I'm not sure the city matters that much - he's playing in Toronto in the non-snowy months - the training facility and spring training is in Florida. Once the season ends he can hop on a jet to his home in Australia, Italy, Okinawa, New Zealand, etc.

Who knows the guy might like snowball fights. I've travelled a fair bit and Canada, despite issues, is a tough place to beat. I'd much rather live in Canada than California. Although California does have beaches and more big-breasted blondes - that's tough to overcome.

I will sacrifice my wife if it means we land Ohtani...

The ohtani news is unreal. Even if we don't get him has me excited because that means we have A LOT of money to work with this offseason. Getting an impact guy like Soto wouldn't be out of the question.

Still wondering where all this funding is coming up for a team that just blew so much on their renovations too.

Money for stadium renovations comes out of a completely separate fund than money to spend on roster related expenses.

This just means that management has no intentions of signing both Bo and Vladdy long term.

No it doesn’t. Capital and operating are both just expenses in a budget.

Please don't 'Yu Darvish' us Ohtani.

If I remember correctly in those days simply money would have likely got it done. They had to offer a posting fee, the Japanese team took the highest posting fee, then they got a negotiating window, in which they usually had to give the player a free agent like contract (or they could go back to Japan). So it was super-expensive, but a team willing to give up the money got the player.

It turned out to be (just looked it up) a 51.7 million posting fee and a 60 million contract, which amounted to a 6 year 110 million deal, pretty expensive for an unknown.

I wonder what the Jays bid? I think there was a rumor they bid 50 million (which they might have) and everybody thought that was crazy so assumed they won the bid. Maybe they bid 51.6. That would have been funny.

Darvish's posting was hype but still kind of in the shadow of DiceK, who was a big flop. The contract ended up being really good. He was only 25 and should have been as hyped as Yamamoto is right now. I wonder if the context actually depressed Darvish's initial contract significantly.

Ohtani's hobbies are sleeping (at least 10 hrs a day) and video games. Based on this, the Jays have as good a chance as any.

Bluejays stadium is one of the handful that are directly downtown within minutes walk for numerous condos. That could appeal to him, get as much sleep as possible, zero commute to the stadium. Have that penthouse condo for the summer. Toronto is one of the most diverse cities as well.
