Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Of course, we do have Chuckles, so you never know what that dude will do... What that dude is going to do is go down in history as the manager of the team's winningest season in franchise history. Bobby Cox will be dethroned. Then in 2050 when fans of the team look up historical franchise records, they'll take a look back at Charlie Montoyo and think "Wow that guy must have been a GREAT manager!"
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Should we look to the trade market for a left handed bench bat? Tyler Naquin seems like an interesting and cheap option. Dominic Smith is also being shopped by the Mets and could be a good fit.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 I haven't read through everything but just getting the lay of the land here....are we all okay with an Espinal/Biggio platoon at 2B? I personally am, I think that combo could return potentially solid value there, especially with a Biggio recovery, which I'm expecting, but a lot of people I know seem really intent on giving away anything the Jays got left and their first born son for Jose Ramirez. I'm not sure it's worth the price considering what we have.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Seems like everyone, including Atkins himself, is open to adding a left handed bat but at this point it might be best to just dumpster dive at that spot. Kirk can be slotted in as the primary DH and Steamer projects him for 126 wRC+. That's not going to be easy to improve on. Atkins did say he'd be open to adding a lefthanded bat if it was better than the right handed bats we have now (or something to that effect) and I think he's referencing Kirk there. So rather than paying a chunk of change for the Confortos or the Pederson's of the world who don't even improve upon Kirk much anyway, it might be best to just look at bringing back Dickerson for a couple mil. Jed Lowrie or Colin Moran could be had for next to nothing too. Villar could make sense, but he isn't going to be as cheap and he might have some PT concerns after we signed Chapman.

I like Kirk as the primary DH and the backup C but getting a left-handed bat for the bench would be a nice cherry on top for the roster.

If Kirk DH's about 50-70 games and catches about the same then he would be fine. The rest of the DH time could be had by a few so bringing back Dickerson on a small deal may make some sense.

The Iceman Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 So what do us fans have to worry about next with this team? For me it is the catching situation. Is there room for 3 catchers on the opening day roster, or do we trade Kirk or lose McGuire to waivers?

Ideally McGuire is only on the team until June, when Moreno gets the call Nothing wrong with Jansen, Moreno, Kirk on the team I wouldn’t be surprised to see Moreno getting 3b, c, and of reps at ST

I'd love to get something for him but he's just not that good so the most we'd miss out on is a 35+ prospect or a low leverage reliever. No big deal.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 I'll apologize right now for the loss on May 15 since I'm planning on being at that game and they've lost every game I've ever went to. At the Trop?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Yeah I'm going to be in Tampa that day for a concert the following day. On vacation or live there, I think I remember the GDT and you were there, IIRC?

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Why do we still have so many catchers though really Y’a and I think most of us expected one of them to be moved this off-season. Maybe they have mcguire as backup and Kirk as primary DH and 3rd tier/emergency catcher given his suspect défense. This all changes when Moreno forces his way in, and in season moves happen.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Keith Law wanted the Jays to just dump McGuire and promote Samad Taylor to protect him from the Rule 5. There's no Rule 5 this year but I think it highlights how little McGuire is worth. I'm sure the Jays are shopping him. Without a taker they might as well keep him to make sure Jansen and Kirk get through spring without injury but once the season starts they might have to just dump him.

Is there room for 3 catchers on the opening day roster, or do we trade Kirk or lose McGuire to waivers? 26 man roster and the DH spot allows you to carry all 3 without much trouble if you want to 5 SP (Berrios, Manoah, Gausman, Ryu, Kikuchi) 9 RP 3 catchers (Jansen, Kirk, McGuire) 4 outfielders (Teo, Gurriel, Springer, Grichuk) 5 infielders (Vladdy, Bo, Chapman, Biggio, Espinal) You still have room for a 9 man bullpen or an 8 man pen and a 5th OF/DH if you get an extra left hand bat
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 That starting rotation is so good, if healthy, that an 8 man pen might actually be OK I would expect very few 1-2 innings bombardements/early departures from that starting staff

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 (edited) We need to add one impact reliever. We have pretty much kept the same pen from last year, which we'd all agree would be the worst amongst all the elite teams. Ideally, I'd like Romano as the 8th inning guy with a shut down closer. Ehjays Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 We could use another bankable RP, but at this stage I'd be tempted to just put Pearson in the BP and let him work on his stuff with Pete and the major league coaches. You can try and stretch him out after that if you think its a possibility. Okay, this is just too cool not to share !!!! forgive me if its somewhere else, but to set this clip up Here is Nate Pearson's private pitching coach Anthony Telford discussing the work he put in with Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Nate Pearson, Jordan Romano and Ryan Borucki this offseason. Danny Jansen was there to catch all 3 guys.
