Holy f*** what are they doing?

In other news, the record Corbin Burnes just set for most strikeouts without a walk at 58, Gerrit Cole broke today.

Set a new record at 61 strikeouts before giving up a walk.

Burnes still holds the record for most strikeouts without a walk to start a season.

Good start to the season for Sean Reid-Foley

Three innings today, faced the minimum 9 batters and struck out five.

Only 9 innings pitched on the year but no walks yet. Zone% way up. Still similar pitch mix and the velo is about the same.

Yeah I saw that too - he's been a stud so far.

That's old man power

It may just be anecdotal but I noticed whenever he hits a homerun lately it barely makes it over...

Might be crazy to say but is Ohtani on the verge of overtaking Trout as the best player in baseball? What Ohtani is doing at the plate and on the mound is surreal. Just hope he stays healthy man.

Not even close.

Sean Reid Foley was lights out today for the Mets 3 IP 5 strikeouts. That was a mistake trading him

I don't think it was. He clearly wasn't going to figure it out here and we got Matz.

No just no.

Yeah, because the Jays don't have anyone in their bullpen that can rack up 5 K's in 3 IP right?

You realize he was traded for a starter that we desperately needed way more than a bullpen arm?

Best player - no.

Most talented player - perhaps. If there is one "generational talent" in the game right now the two candidates are Trout and Ohtani. The argument for Trout is that he is an elite hall of fame talent. The argument for Ohtani is that his skill set has never existed before.

If he could improve his walk ratio on both sides of the field and stay healthy and consistent for a few years. Yes.

Both are big ifs.

Between pitching and hitting he is on pace for 7-8 fWAR, which if he could do for 3 or 4 years still probably wouldn't beat a healthy early 20s Mike Trout. But maybe it would beat an sometimes injured late 20s.early 30s Mike Trout?

Needs to improve the walks. Walks. Health and walks.

It's not impossible given he doesn't seem the type who would walk 80 in 100 innings, and only walk 30 times in 600 at bats. Change it to 40 pitching walks in 120 innings (less walks = less pitches = more innings), and 60 walks as a hitter and he is the best (assuming health, lol given today's injury rates)

I wish Ohtani chose the Dodgers if he wanted to go to LA. The Angels have him and Trout and will still finish way out of the playoff race. They couldn't even make it last year when 16/30 made it.

Then we wouldn’t get to see him hit on a daily basis though

They might have played him in RF a bit

Lack of universal DH suxx though...

Why doesn't anyone mention Rendon (the 3rd best positional player in baseball since 2017)???

It is pretty insane that he's leading the league in home runs and has a 2.10 ERA.

It's obviously an interesting argument. If Ohtani played RF full time, he's probably a 6+ WAR player. If that didn't have any major impact on his ability to pitch every 5 days, there's a real possibility we could see a 10-12 WAR season or two and he could indeed be more valuable than Trout. That said, there's probably a good chance playing RF full time would impact his effectiveness on the mound.

I would like to see them remove the reigns and let him start in RF 3 times a week, DH 2-3 times, while still making a weekly start. The sky is the limit of this kid if he can stay healthy. Baseball needs something like this. We need Ohtani to become a horse who's healthy and dominant and doing things that nobody has seen before.
