The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Because it makes me sad to see players who used to be good trying and failing to keep it going. I like the aesthetics of a career arc like Seager's that doesn't have bad years at the end. I'm all for this too. He's made 100M for his career, both him and his future generations are set up. Instead of an 8 month grind he gets to relax, be with his wife, play with his kids, have one game a week in a softball beer league.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Seager could be banged up, and just tired of the grind at this point. He's made more than enough in his career to take care of his family for at least the next few generations, so a few more years of paydays might not be worth as much as time with that family. The "banged up" part is probably accurate, and he's probably not motivated at all to put in the prep work this winter. This is probably true for 90% of the 35+ year old ballplayers, other than those with HOF possibility.

Brutal.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 and Pat Borders. His late career was awesome. You could NOT get Pat Borders to stop playing baseball. He was playing indie ball in his late 40s, maybe early 50s IIRC...

I know he was managing in the minors but the NY-Penn League is no longer around so maybe he’s off into the sunset at this point. Pretty cool to be a World Series champ and an Olympic Gold medalist.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 Kyle Seager has never even been to the post-season. I say the Jays throw $8 million at him for one season, with the allure of making it to the post-season for the first time in his career. I think he can be convinced.

Albert Pujols is the only remaining active player who was in the league last time the Mariners made the playoffs.

I wonder if Seager found all of the chatter about his 2022 vesting option being a poison pill just very demoralizing and demotivating

I don't think it would be prudent to bring a guy aboard who is no longer interested in playing professional baseball.

World Series MVP, just to make it even more impressive...
